Crater Lake National Park

Oli erittäin mukavaa nukkua uudella leirintäalueella, kun junat eivät herättäneet yön aikana ja heräsimme pirteinä seuraavana aamuna. Tämän päivän kohde Crater Lake National park ja maatkaan pääsimme perinteisesti 10 maissa. Leirintäalueeltamme oli melkein kahden tunnin ajo puistoon ja löysimme perille ilman suurempia ongelmia. Aloitimme jälleen puistoon tutustumisen luontokeskuksesta, johon saavuimme sopivasti juuri ennen Crater Lake esittelyvideon alkua. Crater Lake syntyi yli 7700 vuotta ennen Jeesuksen syntymää, kun yli 12 000 jalkaa korkea Mt Mazama tulivuori purkautui ja suurin osa vuoresta romahti ja tilalle jäi valtava kraateri. Ajanmyötä kraateri täyttyi vedestä ja nyt paikalla on valtava Amerikan syvin kraatterijärvi. Esittely videon jälkeen teimme reittisuunnitelman ja päätimme kiertää kraaterin autolla myötäpäivää ja matkalla pysähtyä kolmelle eri vaellusreitille. Aloitimme The Watchman reitiltä jossa kiipesimme metsänvartijoiden palotornille. Tornilta avautui mahtava näkymä koko järvelle sekä Wizard Islandille. Reitillä näimme myös Amerikanhakin syömässä käppyjä puunoksalla. Pysähdyimme seuraavaksi valmistamaan lounasta, koska seuraavaksi meillä olisi edessämme päivän vaativin reitti Cleetwood Cove Trail, joka laskeutuisi yli 200 metriä järven rannalle. Reitti oli erittäin suosittu, koska sen parkkipaikka oli täynnä ja kun laskeuduimme alas järvelle oli rannalta vaikeaa löytää sopivaa uintipaikkaa. Onneksi sellainen löytyi ja lapset pääsivät uimaan 15 asteiseen kirkkaan siniseen veteen vaellusvaatteet päällä. Kiipeäminen takaisin ylös autolle meni yllättävän nopeasti, ehkä siihen auttoi järven raikas vesi. Seuraavaksi suuntana oli päivän viimeinen reitti Pinnacles overlook, jossa oli hienoja kivimuodostelmia. Matkalla sinne pysähdyimme usealla näköalapaikalla ihailemassa järven kauneutta.

Päivän aikana olimme useaan otteeseen ihmetelleet viereisillä vuorilla olevaa savua ja loppupäivästä savu oli saavuttanut myös Crater Laken. Matkalla takaisin leirintäalueelle meille selvisi, että Oregonissa riehusi metsäpalo ja tällä hetkellä se oli alle 20 km päässä meidän leiristä. Teltoille kun palasimme ei savusta ollut tietoakaan, joten söimme maittavan illallisen ja kävimme nukkumaan. Päivän saldo: 406,8 km ja 7,7 km vaellusta yhteensä.

It was very nice to sleep in the new campsite as there were no trains bothering our sleep, so we woke up refreshed. Today our plan was to visit Crater Lake National Park and of course we started around 10:00am. It was almost a two hour drive to the park from our campsite and we got there without bigger problems. We started again by visiting the visitor center and we arrived there just in time to see the introduction video of the lake. Carter Lake was created over 7700 B.C. when the 12 000 foot volcano Mt Mazama erupted and most of the mountain collapsed and created the crater. During time the crater filled up with water and the deepest lake of United States was born. After the video we did a route plan and we decided to go around the crater clockwise by car and stop to three different trails along the way. We started with The Watchman trail where we climbed up to a Park Ranger Firestation. The view to the lake and to Wizard Island was spectacular. Along the trail we also saw a Clark's Nutcracker sitting on a branch eating a pinecone. Next we stopped to prepare lunch as our next trail Cleetwood Cove would be the days toughest as it dropped over 700 feet to the lake itself. The trail was also very popular as the parking lot was full and once we got down to the lake it was difficult to find a suitable swimming spot. Fortunately we found one and our kid's got to swim in the clear blue 59 degree water with their hiking clothes still on. The climb back to the car went surprisingly fast, maybe the cold water gave us new energy and we started our drive to the days last trail Pinnacles Outlook, where we saw intersting rock formations. On our way there we stopped to several outlooks to take pictures of the beatiful lake.

During the day we had wondered about the smoke on the nearby mountains. Later during the day the smoke had also arrived to the National Park. On our way back to the campsite we found out there was a forest fire in Oregon and at the moment it was only little ovet 10 miles away from our campsite. Once we got vack to our tents there was no sign of smoke, so we had a nice dinner and went to bed. Achievement of the day: 254.3 miles and 4.8 miles of hiking.
