Wind Caves National Parkin luolista innostuneina päätimme vierailla Oregon Cave National Monumentin luolissa. Monument sijaitsi vain reilun tunnin päässä meidän leiristä ja kun pääsimme perille puiston parkkipaikalla meitä odotti kaksi puistonvartijaa, jotka teki meille selvityksen olemmeko soveliaita menemään luolaan (selkä- tai sydänvaivoja, pimeän pelkoa tai claustrophobia) ja olimmeko olleet toisessa luolassa lähiaikoina. Kerroimme että olimme kuukauden sisään olleet Wind Caven luolissa, joten olimme soveliaita menemään luolaan, mutta jos meillä oli samoja vaatteita päällä kuin silloin ne oli vaihdettava sekä kengät piti desinfioida. Tällä haluttiin estää White Nose Syndrooman leviämistä luolan lepakoihin. Kun meistä osa oli vaihtanut vaatteita ja kengät oli puhdistettua saimme siirtyä luontokeskukseen varaamaan kierrosta. Kauaa meidän ei tarvinnut odottaa (5 min) kun kerkesimme 12:00 kierrokselle. Meidän lisäksi kierroksella oli kuusi muuta ihmistä. Oppaana meille toimi puistonvartija Michael, joka aloitti kierroksen turvallisuusohjeilla sekä lyhyellä esityksellä miten luolat olivat muodostuneet. Itse kierros kesti 1,5 tuntia, jonka aikana vaelsimme 1,6km, kävimme 200 jalan syvyydessä ja kiipesimme yli 500 porrasta. Kun tulimme luolasta ulos kiersimme vielä lyhyen Cliff Nature trail kierroksen, joka vei meidät takaisin luontokeskukselle. Keskuksen vieressä oli hotelli, jonka yhteydessä oli ravintola, jossa kävimme perinteisellä hampurilaislounaalla. Oli muuten parhaimmat pirtelöt mitkä olimme saaneet täällä olon aikana.
Päivän aikana metsäpalot olivat vain pahentuneet. Luontokeskuksen tiedotteen mukaan alueella riehui itseasiassa neljä metsäpaloa. Kun palasimme teltoille emme nähneet edes leirintäalueen vieressä olevia vuorenrinteitä. Leirintäalueella teimme hieman varustehuoltoa, lapset kävi ilmapatjalla pomppimassa, kävimme kaikki uimassa leirintäalueen vieressä olevassa joessa ja seurasimme kun sammutuskalusto lensi taivaalla.
We got so excited from the caves of Wind Cave National Park that we decided to visit the caves of Oregon Caves National Monument. The caves were only a hour drive away from our camp and once we arrived there two park rangers were waiting for us. They did a survey to us to make sure we were capable of going to the cave (heart or back problems, fear of the dark or claustrophobia) and if we had visited another cave recently. We told them that we had been in the caves of Wind Cave, so we were capable for the cave, but if we had any clothes on that we had in the previous cave these should be changed and our shoes should be disinfected. This was done to prevent the spreading of White Nose Syndrome to the bats of the cave. Once some of us had changed clothing and our shoes had been cleaned we were allowed to go to the visitor center to reserve our tour. We did not have to wait long (5 min) as we were able to get on the 12:00pm tour. There were six people in addition to us on the tour. Our guide was Park Ranger Michael and he started the tour with safety instructions and with a science presentation on how the caves had formed. The actual tour took 1,5 hour, during which we hiked a mile, went to a debth of 200 feet and climbed over 500 stairs. Once we got out of the cave we took the short Cliff Nature trail which took us back to the visitor center. Beside the center was a hotel that had a restaurant where we went for a typical hamburger lunch. This place had the best milkshakes we've had during our stay here in the US.
During the day the forest fires had gone worse. According to a bulletin in the visitor center there was actually four separate fires in the area. Once we got back to our tents we could not see the mountains beside our campsite. At the campsite we did some laundry, the kids jumped on an air trampoline, we all went for a swim in the river nearby and watched as the fireprevention helicopters flyover.
