Yosemite (27.-29.7)

San Fransiscosta tai siis Petalumasta siirryimme Yosemiten kansallispuistoon. Meillä ei ollut ennakkoon tiedossa missä majoittuisimme vaan tarkoituksena oli ajaa puistoon ja etsiä sieltä sopiva leirintäalue, jossa olisi tilaa. Matkan alku oli erittäin hidasta koska olimme ruuhkassa aina Tracyn asti. Heti kun pääsimme tielle CA 120 ruuhkasta ei ollut tietoakaan. Matkan varrella löysimme vihdoinkin radiokanavan, josta tuli myös uutisia. Kuulimme uutisista Fergusonin metsäpalosta, jossa oli tuhoutunut yli 230 neliökilometriä metsää ja jossa oli 3638 palomiestä sammuttamassa paloa. Ei mennyt kauaakaan kun taivas alkoi täyttymään savusta ja vastaan tuli kyltti, jossa luki, että Yosemite Valley oli suljettu. Päätimme silti ajaa puiston portille ja siellä sijaitsevalle infokeskukselle, josta odotimme saavamme lisää tietoa palosta ja puiston tilanteesta. Kun saavuimme portille yllätykseksemme siellä ei ollut ketään. Pelkästään taulu, jossa oli lisätietoja. Taulun mukaan puiston pohjoispuoli oli auki ja siellä sijaitseva luontokeskus. Joten päätimme etsiä pohjoispuolelta sopivan lerintäalueen ja seuraavana päivänä vierailla luontokeskuksessa hakemassa karttoja sekä selvittelemässä meille sopivia vaellusreittejä. Päädyimme lopulta Yosemite Creekin leirintäalueelle, joka oli yli 20 minuutin ajomatkan päässä päätieltä suoraan alas laakson pohjalle. Leirintäalue oli puistonvartijoiden ylläpitämä ja meidän lisäksi alueella taisi olla vain kourallinen ihmisiä.

Lauantai aamuna suuntasimme sitten Tuolumne Meadowsin luontokeskukselle. Puistonvartijan mukaan Yosemite Valley oli suljettu erittäin huonon ilmanlaadun takia ja ei ollut tietoa, koska se avattaisiin, joten vaelluskohteet valittiin puiston pohjoispuolelta. Lauantaina vaelsimme Tioga Pass/Gaylor lake trailin. Reitti suuntasi aluksi Gaylor järvelle, josta reitti jatkui Upper Gaylor järvelle. Reitin päätepiste oli vanha kaivos yli 3000 metrin korkeudessa ja polku palasi samaa reittiä takaisin autolle. Vaelluskilometrejä yli 7  ja nousua 245 m. Ennen leirille paluuta pysähdyimme Tenaya järvellä uimassa sekä samalla valmistimme myöhäisen lounaan. Matkalla alas leirintäalueelle koimme auton kanssa hieman kauhunhetkiä. Ajoimme n. 500 metriä ennen telttoja kuoppaan, jonka jälkeen auton vasemmasta eturenkaasta alkoi kuulumaan kauhea ininä. Pikaisen tarkastuksen jälkeen emme nähneet autossa mitään vikaa ja ajoimme takaisin telttojen luokse, samalla eturenkaasta kuului koko matkan ininä. Peruutimme auton telttojen viereen ja aloitimme tarkemman auton tutkinnan. Emme löytäneet autosta mitään näkyvää ininän lähdettä. Lapset päättivät lähteä purolle leikkimään naapuri teltan viisi vuotiaan Luvyn kanssa, sillä välin kun teltoilla valmistettiin iltapalaa ja mietittiin missä olisi lähin paikka, jossa auton saisi korjattua. Lähin kylä oli melkein 50km päässä.

Sunnuntaina ennenkuin päätimme mitä tekisimme, lähdemmekö vaeltamaan vai autoa korjaamaan, teimme lyhyen ajelun autolla leirintäalueella. Yllätykseksemme ininää ei enää kuulunut. Ilmeisesti jarrulevyn väliin oli mennyt kivi ja kun peruutimme teltoille kivi oli pudonnut pois. Eli suunta kohti Dog Lake ja Lembert Dome reittejä. Aloitimme vaelluksen Wilderness keskuksen pihalta ja muutaman mutkan kautta päädyimme kiertämään reitin myötäpäivää. Teimme heti aluksi lyhyen vierailun Soda Springseillä, jossa kylmät lähteet kuplivat ja jatkoimme matkaa kohti Dog järveä. Järvellä nautittiin maisemasta ja eväistä. Paluumatkalla poikkesimme Lembert Domella. Huipulle asti emme kiivenneet, koska takana oli jo yli kolme tuntia vaellusta ja loppunousu huipulle oli jyrkkä. Domelta oli enää lyhyt vaellus alas autolle. Päivän saldo yli 10 km ja nousua 275m. Ennenkuin palasimme teltoille, pysähdyimme ensiksi syömään pehmikset Toulumnen kaupalla ja sitten Tenaya järvellä uimassa sekä valmistamassa myöhäisen lounaan. Tällä kertaa pääsimme alas leirille ilman säikähdyksiä ja lapset menivät samantien purolle uimaan. Teltoilla valmistettiin samalla iltapalaa.

From San Fransisco or Petaluma we moved to Yosemite National park. We had no idea where we could camp. Our plan was to drive to the park and find suitable a campsite for us that still had room. The beginning of the drive went slowly as we were stuck in traffic all the way to Tracy, but once we got to CA120 the road was free. On our way we found a radio station that had the news and we heard about the Ferguson wildfire. Over 57 000 acres of burned area and 3 638 firefighters fighting the fire. It didn't take long for the sky to get smokey and along the road we saw a sign informing that Yosemite Valley was closed. We still decided to  continue our way to the park entrance which had an information center and hopefully get additional information about the fire and the park. To our surprise the center was closed. There was a bulletin at the door which informed that the northern part of the park was still open and the Toulumne Meadows visitor center was still open. So we started to look for a campsite and decided to visit the center next day to get maps and get information about suitable trails. After a short search we found the Yosemite Creek campground which was over a 20 minute drive off the main road to the bottom of the valley. The campground was supervised by the park rangers and there was less than 10 people on the site in addition to us.

On Saturday morning we started by visiting the Toulumne Meadows visitor center.  According to the park ranger the Yosemite Valley was closed due to unhealthy amounts of smoke and there was no information when the valley would be opened so we planned our hiking trails from the northern part of the National Park. On Saturday we hiked the Tioga Pass / Gaylor Lake trails. The hike started with a steep climb to Gaylor Lake and continued with a short walk to Upper Gaylor Lake. On the end of the trail was a abandoned mine at almost 11 000 feet where we turned around to return to the car. We hiked over 4.5 miles and climbed over 800 feet. Before returning back to the campsite we stopped at Tenaya Lake for a swim and there we prepared a late lunch. As we approached our camp we had a frightening moment with our car. Roughly 500 yards before the tents we hit a bumb and almost immediately a squeaking sound started from our left front wheel. We did a quick check and did not find anything wrong on the car. So we drove back to our tents and the whole way the front wheel squeaked. We backed up our car beside the tents and did a more thorough check. We could not find the source of the noise. So our kids went to play beside the creek with Lucy a five year old girl from our neighboring tent. At the tents dinner was prepared and plans were made what to do with the car. Nearest town was over 30 miles away.

On Sunday before we decided what to do, go hiking or take the car for repairs, we did a short drive at the campsite. To our surprise the squeaking sound had disappeared. Apparently a rock had gone between the brake disc and once we backed the car to the tents the rock fell off. So we took off to Dog Lake and Lembert Dome trails. We parked our car to the Wilderness center parking lot and after some navigation problems decided to go around the dome clockwise. We did a short stop at Soda Springs where cold bubbling water comes out from the ground. After our stopped we continued our climb to Dog Lake. At the lake we enjoyed the view and had a snack. On our way back we stopped at Lembert Dome. We did not climb all the way to the peak as the final climb was very steep and we had been hiking for over 3 hours. The reruen hike from the dome to the car was short. We hiked over 6 miles and climbed over 900 feet. Before we returned to camp we stopped for ice cream at Toulumne store, went for a swim at Tenaya Lake and prepared a late lunch. This time our decent to camp went well without problems. While we prepared dinner the kids went for a swim in the creek.

Stinson Beach

Tänään oli vuorossa rannalla loikoilua ja aalloissa uintia. Vaateostoksilla oli kuitenkin käytävä ennenkuin kuin pääsimme rannalle. Edellisen illan kylmyydestä oppineena kävimme lapsille ostamassa lämpimämpiä housuja. Onneksi leirintäalueen vieressä oli Premium Outlet, josta löytyi lastenvaateliikkeitä. Kauan ei ostoksilla nokkatuhissut, kun olimme jo matkalla Stinson Beachille, paikallisten suosimalle rannalle. Lapset pääsivät leikkimään hiekalla ja pääsimme uimaan aalloissa. Aurinko kyllä paistoi ja sumu oli hälvennyt, mutta rannalla oli hieman vilpoisa. Lämpötila oli reilusti alle 20:en, mereltä puhalsi kylmä tuuli ja merivesi oli myös kylmää. Melkein kaksi tuntia nautimme rannasta ja aalloista kun lapset halusivat palata leirintäalueelle uimaan lämmitettyyn altaaseen. Ajoimme leirintäalueelle takaisin seuraamalla CA1:stä kohti San Fransiscoa ja vihdoin pääsimme nauttimaan rannikon kauniista ajoreitistä.

Leirintäalueella lapset luttasivat uima-altaassa loppupäivän sillä välin kun teltoilla valmistettiin grilliruokaa. Tänään puimme kunnolla päälle kun menimme ulkoteatteriin katsomaan illan elokuvaa: The Smurfs.

Today it was time to relaxing at the beach and swimming in the waves. But before going to the beach we had to go shopping for clothes. We learned our lesson the night before and went buy warmer pants to the kids. Fortunately the Premium Outlets was beside the campsite and it had stores for kids clothing. It didn't take us long once we were on our way to Stinson Beach. A very popular beach with the locals. The kids got to play with the sand and we all got to swim in the waves. The sun did shine and the fog had disappeared, but the temperature was way under 70 degrees, there was a cold wind from the Ocean and the water was cold. We enjoyed the beach for almost two hours and then our kids wanted to return to the heated pool of the campsite. We drove back by CA1 towards San Francisco. We finally got to see the beautiful coast road of California.

At the campsite the kids spent the remaining of the day at the pool while grill food was prepared by the tents. Today we dressed all our warm clothing when we went to watch the evenings movie The Smurfs at the outside theater.

San Fransisco

Tänään oli vuorossa lasten kauan odottama San Fransisco. Aamu valkeni sumuisena ja kylmänä. Melkein neljän viikon helteiden jälkeen 15 astetta tuntui jäätävältä. San Fransiscoon tutustuminen aloitettiin ylittämällä The Golden Gate Bridge, josta suuntasimme Fisherman's Warfille. Aluksi ihmettelimme Lombard Streetin mutkittelevaa katua ja kaupungin muita jyrkkiä katuja. Kävimme Pier 45:ssa ihailemassa laivoja, kävelimme Jefferson streetillä katselemassa kauppoja sekä katutaiteilijoita. Fisherman's Warfilta pääsi näkemään Alcatrazin vankilankin mantereelta käsin. Pier 39:llä lapset olisivat jaksaneet loputtomiin katsella merileijonien touhuja, mutta lopulta nälkä vei voiton. Pier 39 ravintoloista Hard Rock Cafe houkutti lapsia eniten, joten sinne lounaalle. Hieman oli vaikeaa saada syötyä, kun televisiosta tuli jatkuvasti musiikkivideoita sekä seinillä oli kaikenlaista ihailtavaa.

Vatsat kun oli täynnä käveleminen ei enää houkuttanut ja kelikin oli kylmentynyt kun tuuli oli yltynyt. Päätimme siis palata autolle ja jatkaa kaupunkiin tutustumista autosta käsin. Ajoimme Financial Districtin läpi Twin Peakseille josta avautui hieno maisema koko kaupungista. Kaupunki oli kylläkin osittain sumussa. Ajoimme Golden Gate Parkin läpi Ocean Beachille, jossa meren aallot kutsuivat meitä, mutta kylmyys ja etenkin kova tuuli sai meidät pysymään autossa. Ajoimme Golden Gate Recreation Area läpi ja näimme Golden Gate sillan hieman lähempää ja samalla ihailimme meren kauneutta. Huomasimme ettei sillalla ollut vielä ruuhkaa, joten totesimme, että olisi sopiva hetki aloittaa leirintäalueelle paluu. Olimmehan jo ihan sillan vieressä. Valitettavasti päivä loppui liian aikaisin. Kaupungissa olisi ollut vielä monta kohdetta, jotka olisimme halunneet tutkia. Ilta sai mukavan päätöksen kun katsoimme Thron elokuvan leirintäalueen ulkoteatterissa.

Today was finally the day our kids had been waiting for. The day we visited San Francisco. The morning was cold and foggy. After almost four weeks of continuous warm weather low 60 degrees felt freezing cold. We started our exploration of the city by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and headed to Fisherman's Wharf. First thing we wondered was the winding Lombard Street and the other streets with their steep angles. We went to Pier 45 to explore the ships, walked along Jefferson street and did some window shopping and followed some street performances. From Fisherman's Warf you got a good view of Alcatraz. At Pier 39 our kids could have watched the Sea Lions for the whole day, but hunger took over. From all the restaurants at Pier 39, Hard Rock cafe was the most intriguing, so thats where we went for lunch. It was a little difficult to eat with all the rock n' roll material on the walls and all the music videos.

After lunch with our stomachs full walking around the city did not sound like a good idea and the weather had gotten colder as the wind was stronger. So we returned to the car and continued our sightseeing from the car. We drove through the Financial District to Twin Peaks, where a great view opened of the city. Well some parts were covered by fog. We drove through Golden Gate Park to Ocean Beach where the waves called for us, but the cold and especially the wind convinced us to stay in the car. We drove through Golden Gate Recreation Area where we got a closer view of the Golden Gate Bridge and admired the ocean. We noticed that the traffic on the bridge wasn't so bad so we thought it would be a good time to return to the campsite. We were already so close to the bridge. Unfortunately the day was too short and many things we wanted to explore were left unexplored. The evening ended by watching the movie Thron at the campsites outside theater.

Drive Thru Tree

Aamulla heräsimme virkeinä Eurekan Laguna Inn motellista. Motelli oli hienosti mainostanut, että huoneen hinta sisältää aamupalan. Tämä aamupala oli muffinssi, lasi mehua ja kuppi kahvia, joten aloitimme päivän käymällä Dennysillä aamupalalla.

Päivänohjelmassa oli siirtyminen lähemmäksi San Fransiscoa. Ajoreitti oli yksikertainen: Eureka - Leggett - Santa Rosa - Petaluma. Koko matka US101:stä. Matkalla Leggettin kohdalla tuli vastaan Drive Thru tree matkakohde, jonne päätimme pysähtyä tätä ihmettä katselemaan. Itse päätimme kävellä puun läpi, koska autolla odottaminen olisi kestänyt ikuisuuden. Puun ihmettelyn jälkeen jatkoimme matkaa, mutta päätimmekin kiertää Fort Braggin kautta (CA1 ja Hwy 20), kun kartan mukaan se kiersi mukavasti rannikon kautta. Reitin varrella näimme rannikon ehkä 10 km matkalla ja sekin oli sumussa. Muuten reitti (114 km) oli erittäin mutkaista vuotistotietä. Leirintäalueelle pääsimme kuitenkin hyvissä ajoin ja lapset kerkesivät käymään uimassa ja nuotiolla valmistimme maittavan illallisen.

We woke up refreshed at the Laguna Inn in Eureka. The motel had advertised that the breakfast was included to the price of the room. The breakfast was a muffin, a glass of juice and a cup of coffee. So we went to Denny's for breakfast.

The schedule for the day was to drive closer to San Francisco. The route was easy: Eureka - Leggett - Santa Rosa - Petaluma. All the way on US 101. On the way in Leggett we saw the sign to the Drive Thru tree attraction so we decided to stop to see this wonder. We decided to walk through the tree as with the car it would have taken ages. After wondering enough we continued our way, but instead of going  back to US101 we decided to go through Fort Bragg (CA1 ja Hwy 20) as from our map it looked like the route went along the coast. We saw the coast maybe for less than 10 miles and of course there was fog. The remaining of the route (68 miles) was difficult mountain roads. Even though we arrived to the campsite in good time and our kids got to go for a swim and we prepared a delicious dinner on the campfire.

Redwoods National Park

Yön aikana metsäpalot olivat ilmeisesti pahentuneet, koska näkyvyys oli heikentynyt entisestään. Ennenkuin lähdimme jatkamaan matkaa kävimme leirintäalueen toimistolla kyselemässä päivitettyjä tietoja paloista, eteenkin Illinois Valleyn palosta, koska olimme suuntamassa sinne päin. Paloilla ei ollut vaikutusta reitillemme: Grants Pass - Crescent City CA - Eureka (I5 - US199 - US101). Matkalla näimme kyllä teitä, jotka oli suljettu metsäpalon takia.

Päivän ensimmäinen kohde meillä oli Redwood National Park. Kuten aina aloitimme vierailun käymällä luontokeskuksessa hakemassa puiston kartan. Tänään meillä ei ollut tarkoituksena vaeltaa vaan ihailla puiston massiivisia puita lähinnä autosta käsin. Teimme kuitenkin lyhyen Circle Trailin, jossa pääsimme ihailemaan yli 1500 vuotta vanhaa  The Big Treetä. Puistossa olisi ollut kyllä mukava päästä vaeltamaan, mutta tänään se jäi meiltä väliin. Jatkoimme matkaa Eurekan kaupunkiin, jossa meitä odotti Motellimajoitus. Onneksi motellissa oli uima-allas ja lapset pääsivät uimaan. Iltaa vietettiin TV:n ääressä.

During the night the forest fires had gotten apparently worse as the visibilty was close to zero. Before we continued our travels we stopped at the campsite office to get an update on the forest fires, especially the one in Illinois Valley as we were going that direction. The fire had no impact on our route: Grants Pass - Crescent City CA - Eureka (I5 - US199 - US101). During our drive we saw roads that were closed due to the fire.

Our first location of the day was Redwood National Park. As always we started our visit by going to the visitor center to get a map of the park. Today we had no plans to hike. Only admire the massive trees of the park from the car. We did the short Circle trail where we got to admire the 1500 year-old The Big tree. We would have wanted to be able to go hiking in the park, but we had to continue our way to the city of Eureka, where motel accommodation was waiting for us. Fortunately the motel had a pool and our kids were able to go for a swim. The rest of the evening we spent watching TV.
