Magic Kingdom

Retken toinen päivä vietettiin Magic Kingdomissa. Aamu aloitettiin tuhdilla aamupalalla ja suoraan ruokapöydästä lautalle, joka vei meidät suoraan leirintäalueelta huvipuistoon. Vietimme puistossa lähes 10 tuntia. Monessa laitteessa käytiin, tavattiin useita Disney hahmoja, nähtiin paraati ja useita esityksiä. Illan kruunasi mahtavat ilotulitukset. Lautalla takaisin leirintäalueelle ja melkein suoraan nukkumaan. Päivän saldo: 0km, mutta monta mahtavaa kokemusta.

Our second day was spent in Magic Kingdom. We started our day with a big breakfast and straight from the table to the ferry that took us from the campsite to the park. We spent almost 10h in the park. We went on multiple rides, saw many Disney characters, saw a parade and many shows. The evening ended with a fantastic fireworks show. We went back to the campsite and straight to bed. Days achievement: 0 miles, but many wonderful experiences.

Matka on alkanut/ Our journey has begun

Aamulla tyhjensimme asunnon ja luovutimme avaimet. Hyvästelimme toimiston henkilökunnan ja muutaman talon asukkaan.  Kahdelta Hartfordista lento Charloten kautta Orlandoon. Kentältä noudimme auton ja 40 min myöhemmin olimme  leirintäalueella pystyttämässä telttoja. Iltatoimet ja nukkumaan. Päivän saldo 9 h matkustamista. 

In the morning we emptied the appartment and returned the keys. Said our farewells to April and to few residents. At 2.00pm we took a flight from Hartford  to Charlotte with a connection to Orlando. From the airport we got our rental car and 40 min later we were at the campsite putting our tents up. Short wash and to bed. Days achievement 8 h of travelling.

Loppu Valmistelut / Final preparations

Viimeinen kuukausi on ollut hektistä. Koulujen loputtua olemme valmistautuneet muuttoon sekä tulevaan matkaan. Rautakaupasta haimme laatikoita ja aloitimme hyvissä ajoin pakkaamaan vaatteita sekä lasten tavaroita laatikoihin. Loppujen lopuksi koko vierashuone oli täynnä laatikoita. Muuttofirma tuli aamulla 27.6. ja kämppä oli kuudessa tunnissa tyhjä. Asunnossa oli ainoastaan meidän viisi matkalaukkua sekä ne tavarat mitä emme voineet ottaa mukaan.

Autoa olemme yrittäneet myydä jo useamman viikon ajan, mutta lopulta saimme myytyä sen samalle autokaupalle, josta sen ostimme. Kaj kävi lauantaina 23.6. kysymässä autokaupasta tarjouksen ja sopi, että luovuttamme auton vasta torstaina 28.6. Lähdimme torstaina autoa luovuttamaan ennen puoltapäivää ja autokaupassa meille selvisi, että meiltä puuttui omistusoikeuspaperit. DMV:n olisi pitänyt lähettää nämä paperit meille kuusi kuukautta auto oston jälkeen. Ei auttanut muuta kuin, että Kaj lähti DMV:lle paperia hankkimaan ja Anne ja lapset palasivat asuntoa siivomaan. DMV oli tyypilliseen tapaan aivan täynnä ja jonossa Kaj:ta ennen oli 71 ihmistä + muut. DMV:llä on eri asioille omat jononsa, jotka on koodattu kirjaimin A:sta G:hen ja Kaj:n numero D671. Kolmen tunnin odotuksen jälkeen Kaj pääsi virkailijalle ja n. 3 minuutissa omistuoikeistodistus oli meillä. Kaj ajoi suoraan autoliikkeseen ja alle puolessatunnissa auto oli myyty ja shekki kädessä.

Perjantaina kävimme vielä pankissa siirtämässä shekin tilille ja siirtämässä rahaa Suomeen. Roudasimme muutaman autollisen tavaraa asunnosta Kaj:n työpaikalle ja peruimme kaasun, sähkön, kaapelitelevision, vakuutukset sekä tietulli asiakkuuden. Anne lasten kanssa siivosi asunnon lattiasta kattoon ja nyt me olemme valmiit tulevaan seikkailuumme.

Kuukauteen on sisältynyt myös erittäin mukaviakin hetkiä. Kuun puolivälissä kävimme Armstrongeilla viettämässä viikonloppua. 22.6. olimme Ryaneilla grillijuhlissa ja muuttopäivänä saimme kutsun lasten ESL opettajalta mennä viettämään iltaa Pinewood järvelle. Tapasimme samalla lasten muitakin opettajia.

Huomisesta lähtien yritämme Blogin kautta pitää päiväkirjaa meidän Grand Tourista ja lisätä kuvia ja videoita matkan varrelta.

The last month has been hectic. After the schools ended we have been doing preparations for the move and for our trip. We went to Lowe's to get some boxes and  we started early in the month to pack clothing and our kid's toys. In the end our guest room was full of boxes. The moving company came on June 27th and in little over 6 hours our apartment was empty. Except for our 5 bags and the stuff we could not take with us.

We have been trying to sell our car for a long time, but in the end we were able to sell the car to the same dealer who sold it to us. Kaj visited the dealer on Saturday June 23rd and got an offer from them and agreed to take the car to the dealer on Thursday June 28th. We left to the dealer on Thursday before noon and once we got there we found out we did not have the title of the car. DMV was supposed to send this document to us within 6 months from the date when we bought it. We never got one. So Kaj had to go to DMV to get a title while Anne returned home with the kids to continue with the cleaning. Of course DMV was packed and there was 71 people before Kaj on the line + the other people on the line for other purposes. After 3 hours Kaj got to the clerk and within three minutes we had the title. So back to the dealer and in less than 30 minutes the car was sold and we had our check.

On Friday we went to the bank to deposit the check and to make a wire transfer to Finland. We took few car loads of stuff to Kaj's office and we cancelled our gas, electricity, cable, EZpass and insurance accounts. Anne cleaned the apartment with the kids and now we are ready for our adventure.

The month has included also very memorable moments. Mid June we spent a very nice weekend with the Armstrongs. On June 22nd we had a grill party with the Ryans and on our moving date our kid's ESL teacher invited us to spend the afternoon at Pinewood lake. We also got to see some of our kid's teachers.

Starting from tomorrow we will use our blog as a diary from our Grand Tour and we will try to post pictures and videos along the way.

Viimeinen kouluviikko / End of school year

Viimeinen kouluviikko alkoi ristiriitaisin tunnelmin. Lapsia harmitti suunnattomasti, että koulu loppuisi perjantaina. Eteenkin kun joutuisivat hyvästelemään kaikki kaverit sekä opettajat. Jokainen ilta kävimme keskustelun siitä miksi meidän pitää lähteä ja jokaista lohdutettiin vuorollaan. Viimeinen viikko oli pääsosin tavaroiden pakkaamista ja loma valmisteluita. Kristerillä oli vielä tiistaina Litchfieldin kylän esittely. Krister toimi matkaoppaana. Keskiviikkona Jasminilla ja Jadella oli End of Year Pizza ja pojilla vastaavasti torstaina. Perjantaina lapset pääsivät jo kello 13:00 koulusta ja kotiin saapuivat itkua vääntäen. Onneksi pääsivät Smoothie Kingiin niin olo hieman helpotti.

Lasten vanhempina haluaisimme kiittää Race Brookin koulua sekä Mary L. Tracy koulua näistä kahdesta vuodesta. Lapset ovat oppineet kahdessa vuodessa puhumaan ja kirjoittamaan englanniksi. Tavanneet ihmisiä monesta eri kulttuurista sekä nähneet erilaisen tavan opiskella. Haluamme kiittää Mary L. Tracyn rehtoria Jaden eskari vuodesta sekä Mrs. Papa loistavasta opetuksesta. Lisäksi haluamme kiittää Race Brook Shoolin rehtoria Mr. Grayta sekä kaikkia opettajia, Mrs. Crokindalea, Mrs. Escandonia, Mrs. Antonia, Mrs. Buttleria sekä Ms. Nizzardoa hienosta työstä ja lastemme huolenpidosta. Erityisesti haluamme kiittää Mrs. Haydenia sekä Mrs. McCabea lastemma englanninkielen opetuksesta ja kaikesta tuesta, jonka ovat saaneet. Haluamme kiittää myös koko koulun henkilökuntaa siitä miten ihanasti olette ottaneet meidät kaikki vastaan ja miten olette osoittaneet rakkautta lapsiamme kohtaan. Teitä kaikkia tullaan ikävöimään.

The kids last week started with mixed feelings. They were very disappointed that the school would end on Friday and would have to say goodbye to all of their friends and teachers. Every evening on that week we had the conversation why we had to leave and a lot of comforting was needed. The last week was mainly packing of materials and getting ready for the vacation. On Tuesday Krister had his Litchfield town presentation where he acted as a guide. On Wednesday Jasmin and Jade had their End of the Year pizza parties and the boys had theirs on Thursday. On Friday the kids had a minimum day and they got home a 1:00pm with tears on their eyes. Fortunately they got to go to Smothie King which helped with the pain.

As the parents of our kids we would like to thank Race Brook School and Mary L. Tracy school for these two years. Our kids have learned to speak and write in English. Met people from multiple different countries and cultures. Seen a different way of studying and school life. We would like to thank Mrs. Bird the principal of  Mary L. Tracy for Jade's kindergarten year and Mrs. Papa for a fantastic job. We would also like to thank Mr. Gray the principal of Race Brook School and all the teachers, Mrs. Corkindale, Mrs. Escandon, Mrs. Anton, Mrs. Buttler and Ms. Nizardo for taking care of our kids and for the amazing work. A special thank you for Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. McCabe for teaching our kids English and for the amazing support they have received. We would also like to thank all the other teachers and staff of the school for taking us all into your lives and showing a lot of love toward our kids. We will miss you all tremendously.

Kotiinpaluu valmistelut aloitettu / We have started preparations for the move

Ensimmäinen asia jonka teimme oli paluulentojen varaus Suomeen. Villit palaa maailmalta kuudes päivä elokuuta. Seuraava vaihe oli vuokrasopimuksen purku. Sopimuksen mukaan irtisanominen tuli tehdä 60 päivää ennen pois muuttoa, joten irtisanoimme asunnon heti huhtikuun aikana eli asunnon tulee olla tyhjä kesäkuun loppuun mennessä. Nyt sitten muuttoa tilaamaan. Kaj lähetti tarjouspyynnöt muutamalle firmalle ja Spring Breakin aikana käytiin firmojen kanssa Skypepalaverit, joissa tarkistettiin konttiin tulevat tavarat. Melkein saman verran tulee tavaraa takaisin Suomeen kuin mitä tänne tuli. No ehkä muutama artikkeli lisää. Tarjoukset saatiin jo muutamassa päivässä ja nyt muuttokin on tilattu. Muuttofirma saapuu 26.6. pakkamaan meidän kuorman konttiin.

Nyt sitten miettimään mitä pitää tehdä seuraavaksi. Kaasu, sähkö, kaapeli ja vakuutukset tulee perua. Auto pitää myydä ja osalle tavaroista pitää etsiä uudet omistajat. Lasten kouluun on ilmoitettu, etteivät jatka enää täällä ja samalla lapset on ilmoitettu Villähteen kouluun, jossa aloittavat seuraavan lukukauden elokuun 13:sta päivä.

Lasten koulu loppuu kesäkuun 15:sta ja Kaj aloittaa loman heti Heinäkuun alusta. Ajatuksena meillä on viettää koko loma Yhdysvalloissa ja tarkoituksena olisi lähteä autolla kiertämään maata ja päätyä elokuun alussa Los Angelesiin, josta meidän paluulento lähtee kohti Suomea.

The first thing we did was to buy our return tickets to Finland. The Finnish Wild return home on August 6th. Our next step was to give notice to our apartment. According to our contract we had to notify the office 60 days before the intended move date, so we informed them already during April that we would be moving out. So our apartment has to be empty by the end of June. Now to look for a moving company. Kaj sent few RFQs to several different companies and during Spring Break we had Skype meetings where we determined what would be packed to the container. Almost the same amount of articles are going back to Finland as were brought here. Ok some extra articles are going back. We received the offers withing few days and now the moving company has been chosen and they are coming on June 26th.

So now we have to start thinking what to do next. Gas, electricity, cable and insurances have to be canceled. The car has to be sold and we will have to find new owners for some of our furniture. We have informed the school that our kids will not be continuing there next semester and we have registered our kids to the school of Villähde where they will start on August 13th.

The kids school ends on June 15th and Kaj will start his summer vacation on July 1st. We have planned to spend the whole vacation in the US and start a road trip cross the country so that we arrive to Los Angeles in the beginning of August to catch our flight back to Finland.

Seikkailu tulee päätökseen / The Adventure is coming to the end

Pitkään on jo pohdittu, miten tämän kirjoittaisi? Ei haluaisi kuulostaa katkeralta, vaikka se miten asia hoidettiin, pahalta maistuikin... Mehän ollaan saavutettu se, mitä täältä tultiin hakemaan ja monta kokemusta vielä enemmän.

Kesälomalta tänne palattuamme käytiin koko perheen kesken keskustelu, jossa pohdittiin jatkoa. Sen hetkiset faktat tuotiin esiin ja lapset sai esittää kysymyksiä ja toiveita, jotka käsiteltiin avoimesti. Keskustelun loppupäätelmä oli, että meidän perhe oli valmis jatkamaan elämää Yhdysvalloissa vielä pari vuotta.

Viikko tästä keskustelusta eteenpäin ja Kaj tulee töistä ilmoittaen, että meidän perheen toiveella ei ollut mitään painoarvoa jatkoneuvotteluissa. Päätös oli tehty meidän puolesta ja Kajn työpanosta täällä ei enää tarvita sopimuskauden jälkeen. Eli me tulemme kotiin kesällä 2018. Jouduttiin siis uudestaan keskustelupöytään lasten kanssa. Eikä uutista ihan pureskelematta nielaistu.

Nyt täällä siis eletään kuin viimeistä päivää ja vielä määrittämättömässä ajankohdassa ensi kesänä palataan Suomeen. Kotiin on kiva tulla, mutta silti ollaan surullisia, että tämä loppuu näin pian...

For long we have been thinking how to write this ? We don't want to sound bitter, even though we are not happy with the way things were handled. We have accomplished what we came here for and have had a lot of great experiences on top of that.

After our summer vacation, we sat down with our kids and discussed our plans together. All the facts we knew at the time were brought up in the discussions. Kids were able to ask questions and tell their hopes and everything was handled openly. Our families conclusion was that we would like to continue our life in the U.S. for couple more years.

Week after this Kaj came from work and told that our hopes didn't have any value in the contract negotiations. The decision had been made for us and Kaj's work wasn't needed here anymore after his contract ends. So we are coming home during summer 2018. So again we had to sit down with our kids and talk this through. And they didn't take it easily.

Now we are living here like this would be our last day. We are coming back to Finland some time next summer, we don't know exactly when yet. It feels good to come home, but still it is kind of sad that this is coming to end so soon...

Luopumisen tuska / The pain of saying good bye

Täällä elämä on hektistä. Muuttoliike on jatkuvaa. Erilaisia perheitä tulee ja menee. Toisten kanssa ollaan enemmän tekemisissä kuin toisten. Joidenkin kanssa solmitaan ystävyys... Ja sitten tulee se päivä, kun pitää hyvästellä. Ja tämä on asia, joka ei helpotu vaikka niitä olisi kuinka paljon. Päin vastoin, mitä useammin joutuu hyvästelemään, sitä varovaisemmaksi tulee. Miksi solmia ystävyys, kun tiet kuitenkin eroaa?

Se on sydäntä särkevää katsoa lohduttomasti itkevää lastaan, kun jälleen pitää hyvästellä ja silti pienen mielessä toivo elää: "Me voidaan nähdä sitten, kun ollaan molemmat kasvettu isoiksi. Kaveri lupasi tulla Suomeen, sitten kun on riittävän iso ja sitten me mennään shoppailemaan. Tai mä voin mennä katsomaan sitä." Jälleen on osoitteita vaihdettu. Nyt toivotaan, että ystävyys kantaa ja kestää maailman myrskyt...

Here the life is hectic. Someone is moving all the time. Different families come and go. Some you get to know better than the others. With some you are able to tie the friendship knot... And then comes the day you have to say goodbye. And this is thing that doesn't get easier even how many times you face it. Just on the contrary, the more you have to say goodbye the more careful you will be. Why tie the friendship, when your going different directions anyway?

It's heartbreaking to see your child crying her eyes out, when she has to once again say goodbye, yet still she has hope in her mind: " We can see each other again, when we are all grown up. She promised to come to see me in Finland, when she is big enough and then we can go shopping. Or I can go see her." Again we have exchanged addresses. Now we hope that the friendship will continue and it can hold all the storms life has to offer...
