Lapsia ilmoitetaan kouluun / Registering the kids to school

Kouluun ilmoittautuminen aloitettiin sillä, että Kaj soitti Orangen kouluvirastoon. Ja sai sieltä kuulla, että Jade menisi Mary L. Tracy kouluun kindergarteniin ja loput menisivät Race Brookin kouluun. Sieltä saatiin myös neuvot mennä koulujen sivuille ilmoittamaan lapset kouluun. Tämän tehtyämme jäimme odottamaan, mitä seuraavaksi? Race Brookin koulusta tuli sähköpostilla ohjeet toimittaa lasten rokotustodistukset, todisteet Orangessa asumisesta ja syntymätodistukset. Mary L. Tracy koulusta ei tullut mitään jatko-ohjeita sähköpostilla vain tieto kouluun tutustumispäivästä. Naapurissa asuva Mia, joka on omien lasten kanssa näitä ilmoittautumisia jo hoitanut, infosi meitä tulevasta paperien pyörittelystä. Saatiin paksu pino papereita täytettäväksi, jotka Mia oli tulostanut.

Paperi pinoa tuijotellessa meinasi jo iskeä lannistuminen... Miten ihmeessä niiden täyttämisestä selviäisi. Mia painotti, että lääkärin tarkastus oli olennaisin osa papereita. Anne tarttui härkää sarvista ja alkoi täytellä lomakkeita. Hyvä tovi siinä menikin, ei nyt ihan uusi päivä ehtinyt koittaa, mutta sen yön unet jäi lyhyiksi. Lomakkeista nousi sellainen tunne, että vain pähkinäallergia on täällä allergia. Koulut ovat pähkinävapaita.

Jaden koulusta tuli kirje, jossa kerrottiin kouluun tutustumisesta ja oli jo valmiina Jaden bussikortti. Tästä tuli se käsitys, että asiat ovat heidänkin päässään edenneet. No, ehkä kaikki selviäisi sitten tutustumisessa.

Saatiin kaikkien kolmen muun paperit valmiiksi ja ajeltiin viemään papereita koululle keskiviikkona 17.8. Siellä oli erittäin ystävällinen ja tervetullut vastaanotto. Koulusihteeri jopa muisti lasten nimet ja oli kiinnostunut meidän muutosta, täällä jo vietetystä ajasta ja esitteli meidät rehtorillekin, joka yhtälailla osoitti aitoa kiinnostusta meidän perhettä kohtaan ja vakuutteli kaiken menevän hyvin. Tarvittavat asiakirjat kopioitiin ja mapitettiin lasten kansioihin. Lisäksi kerrottiin, että infokirjeet opettajista ja kouluun tutustumisesta oli jo lähetetty eli ne ovat tulossa lähi päivinä. Muistuttivat myös, että ensimmäinen koulupäivä 29.8. on täysipäivä, joten lapsilla on hyvä olla juomapullot ja välipaloja sekä eväät elleivät syö koulussa 2,75$ lounasta. Kehottivat varaamaan ajan lääkärintarkastukseen, mutta tiesivät, että siellä voi olla ruuhkaa, joten pyysivät toimittamaan tarkastuslomakkeet, kun ne saadaan. Lupasivat tarkastaa olemmeko sähköisessä ilmoittautumisessa ilmoittaneet lapset oikeille luokille, kun ilmoitimme heidät Suomen järjestelmän mukaan, mutta uskoivat sen olevan ihan oikein. Tuntui huojentavalta, varmuus tähän kouluun kasvoi ja ilmeisesti olemme tervetulleita. Kehottivat vielä tutustumaan koulun pihalla olevaan leikkialueeseen, joka silmin nähden tyydytti lapsia. Monta huolta karisi meidän kaikkien harteilta.

Koitti Jaden kouluun tutustumisen aamu 18.8. Eilisestä varmuutta saaneina lähdettiin koululle. Tutustumisen oli kerrottu kestävän noin puoli tuntia ja siihen kuuluu ensiajelu koulubussilla. Jadea jännitti ja pelotti kovasti, koitin kertoa tutustumisesta sen mitä tiesin ja vakuutella sen menevän hyvin, Jade on niin reipas tyttö. Oltiin koululla ajoissa ja ajateltiin käydä ensin toimistossa hoitamassa paperihommat... Mutta ei oltu ainoat, tähän kouluun tulee kaikki Orangen kindergartenilaiset, joten väkeä oli paljon. Päädyttiin jakaantumaan, Kaj jää papereiden kanssa jonottamaan ja Anne menee Jaden kanssa ruokalaan kuuntelemaan bussi orientaatiota. Ruokalassa oli liki kolmen luokan lapset perheineen ja meteli oli korvia huumaava. Joku nainen ilmestyi käytävälle huutelemaan megafoniin. "Älkää pakottako minua käyttämään tätä." Väki vähän hiljeni, sen enempää itseään esittelemättä kertoi bussin kolme tärkeitä sääntöä, jotka yritin Jadelle suomentaa. 1) Peppu laitetaan penkkiin 2) Selkä laitetaan selkänojaan 3) Istutaan paikallaan, kehenkään ei saa koskea, puhua saa, mutta ei huutaa. Esiteltiin bussin kuljettaja ja lapset kutsuttiin oettajan nimellä omiin jonoihin. Jade vielä yritti sanoa, ettei halua mennä, mutta tsemppasin ja tuuppasin tytön matkaan, näyttämättä sitä kauhunsekaisista tunnetta joka kurkkua kuristi, kun eihän hän edes ymmärrä mitä siellä sanotaan... Tässä välissä Kaj sanoi, että Annen pitäisi mennä tapaamaan koulun hoitajaa, jolle oli jättänyt Jaden paperit. Anne kävi hoitajan luona ja sai lisää papereita täytettäväksi ja lisäksi hoitaja ei osannut lukea Jaden papereita, eikä ne hänen mielestään olleet riittävän hyvin täytetty. Lisäksi Jade ei pääsisi aloittamaan koulua ellei lääkärintarkastusta ole tehty ja tarkastuksesta saatavat paperit kunnossa. Ensimmäisen kerran tuli mieleen saadaanko näin tylyä kohtelua, koska olemme maahanmuuttajia? Ketään ei kiinnostanut Jade, Jaden perhe tai meidän asettuminen saati lähtö maa. Vaikutti siltä, että he ajattelivat meidän kuitenkin olevan jostakin kehitysmaasta ja meidän olevan vähintäänkin tyhmiä. Onko meidän lapsen varmasti hyvä olla täällä? Meiltä jopa tiedusteltiin mistä osavaltiosta tullaan... Mitä???? Osavaltiosta, ei, kun Suomesta. Käsittääksemme se ei ole Yhdysvaltojen osavaltio, on kyllä aikanaan kuulunut niin Venäjään kuin Ruotsiinkin, mutta ollut jo jokusen vuoden itsenäinen valtio. Pahinta oli, että Annen päässä takoi ajatus, että ensivaikutelma on tärkein ja se jää mieleen... Eikä Anne halunnut tällaista ensivaikutelmaa. Vielä yritettiin korjata tilannetta, Kaj soitti lääkärikeskukseen selvitelläkseen ajan mahdollisuutta ja Anne täytteli papereita. Käytiin vielä Jaden luokassa tutustumassa, mutta siellä ei ollut edes Jadelle nimettyä paikkaa eikä seinällä olleessa oppilastaulussa ollut Jaden nimeä... Hirvittävän surullista, kun muille oli paikka ja nimet taulussa. Lähtiessä Anne vei vielä hoitajalle täyttämänsä paperit ja kertoi, että tarkastus asiakin etenee, mutta edes siitä ei hoitajalta herunut onnistumisen merkkejä. Vahvasti iski tunne: juokse tai kuole.

Kaj oli saanut puhelimessa ohjeet mennä käymään lääkärikeskuksella avaamassa lapsille asiakasrekisterit. Luojan kiitos, siellä oli ystävällinen ja ymmärtäväinen palvelu ja saatiin järjesteltyä Jadelle tarkastusaika 20.8. Lauantaina tarkastuksessa hoitaja tarkasti kuulon, joka oli normaali, näön, kovasti Annea kiinnostavalla menetelmällä, mutta sekin oli normaali, verenpaineen -normaali, pituuden, painon, ja veri näytteen sormen päästä, pissa näytteenkin pyysi. Hoitaja poistui ja lääkäri saapui opiskelijan kanssa. Lääkäri kyseli kysymyksiä, Anne vastaili ja kaikki kirjattiin ylös. Ilmeni, että täällä yleiseen rokotusohjelmaan kuuluu A- ja B-hepatiitti rokotteet, jotka Jadelle pitää antaa. Ja vaikka asiaa oli jo Suomessa selvitelty, niin tietoa tällaisesta ei löydetty eikä saatu. Lääkäri rokotti kaksi ei pistosta (Suomessa olisi päästy yhdellä.) Henkilökunta oli ystävällistä ja kaikki sujui hyvin. Verinäyte ja rokotukset hieman itkettivät Jadea, mutta tikkarilla kaikki parani. Pissanäytettä ei saatu kalastettua. Lasku 260$. Niin hyvä fiilis, että paperit saatu hoidettua.

Isommat lapset saivat kouluinfo kirjeensä perjantaina 19.8. ja niissä oli paljon positiivista asiaa tulevaan kouluvuoteen ja ehkä jopa loppumattomalta vaikuttava tarvikelista. Listojen kanssa lähdettiin lauantaina Jaden lääkärin jälkeen ostoksille. Valtavasti tavaraa ja suurin osa on luokan yhteiseen käyttöön eli täällä vanhemmat ostavat koulutarvikkeet opettajille ja oppilaille kouluvuodeksi... Ja kun meillä on kolme lasta, kolmella eri luokalla, niin tarvikkeita oli paljon.

Maanantaina 22.8. ajeltiin Jaden koululle viemään tarkastuksesta saatuja papereita. Hoitaja katsoi paperit ja takertui kohtaan, jossa ei ollut merkintää Jaden vesirokosta. Anne sanoi, Jaden sairastaneen sen ja asiasta lääkärin kanssa oli puhuttu ja siksi ei rokotusta tarvita. Tämä ei riittänyt, pitää olla kirjallinen todistus. Seuraavaksi ajamaan taas lääkärikeskukselle ja selvittämään asiaa. Vastaanottovirkailija otti Annen puhelinnumeron ja lupasi, että hoitaja soittaa asiasta. Lähdettiin Milfordiin ostarille kauppoja ihmettelemään. Toiseen kauppaan päästyämme hoitaja soitti ja lupasi tehdä paperin valmiiksi vastaanottoon odottamaan. Kysyi vielä tiedot Jaden vesirokosta ja puhelu päättyi. Hoidettiin ostokset loppuun ja ajettiin lääkärikeskukselle hakemaan todistus vesirokosta ja vietiin se koulunhoitajalle. Todistus oli kopio Jaden rokotelehdestä, jossa vesirokon kohdalla luki käsin kirjoitettuna: "ei tarvitse" ja nuoli selitykseen, jossa luki sairastanut vanhempien diagnosoiman vesirokon toukokuussa 2015. Tämä näytti riittävän hoitajalle ja saimme vihdoinkin Jaden paperit kuntoon.

Tiistaina 23.8. saatiin Race Brookin hoitajalta puhelu, jossa hän halusi meidät koululle selvittämään isompien lasten rokotuksia. Hän oli yrittänyt tulkita Suomesta tuotua rokotelehteä, mutta ei ollut ymmärtänyt kaikkea. Luvattiin ajella keskiviikko (24.8.) aamuna koululle asiaa selvittämään. Anne kävi hoitajan kanssa selvittämässä rokotukset ja täällä asiat näyttäisi olevan selvät puhumalla ja kertomalla, että lasten terveystarkastukseen on saatu varattua aika ja tarvittavat rokotukset (A- ja B- hepatiitti) laitetaan silloin. Meitä vaan mietityttää, miksi tätä tietoa hepatiitti rokotuksista ei ollut saatavilla Suomessa? Asiaa selviteltiin useamman tahon voimin, eikä mitään tietoa Suomen rokotusohjelmasta poikkeavista rokotteista löytynyt. Hepatiitti rokotteiden sarja olisi voitu aloittaa jo Suomessa, jos tieto olisi ollut saatavilla. Mahdollisesti sarjat olisi saatu hoidettua loppuunkin...

Keskiviikkona 24.8. olikin sitten vanhempien lasten kouluun tutustuminen. Aluksi kokoonnuimme koulun liikuntasaaliin, jossa rehtori piti meille kouluesittelyn. Samalla esiteltiin koulun turvallisuushenkilökunta sekä vanhempainyhdistyksen edustajat. Tämän jälkeen vanhemmille sekä oppilaille oli järjestetty kouluun tutustuminen. Meidän piti jälleen jakaantua, koska ekaluokkalaisille oli järjestetty oman esittelykierros, koska he pääsisivät tapaamaan opettajiaan. Muille uusille oppilaille oli oma kierroksensa. Joten päätimme, että Kaj menee Kasmirin ja Jaden kanssa ekaluokkalaisten kierrokselle ja Anne meni Kristerin ja Jasminin kanssa kierrokselle. Koulu kierrettiin, Kasmir tapasi opettajansa sekä Jasmin. Lopuksi kokoonuimme koulunruokalaan, jossa lapsille oli tarjolla vielä jäätelöä. Ennen kuin lähdimme kotiin vaihdoimme muutaman sanan koulun rehtorin kanssa. Rehtori vakuutteli meille, että kaikki tulee menemään lapsilla loistavasti ja jos ikinä tarvitsisimme jotain voisimme olla häneen yhteyksissä.

Hieman on erilaiset fiilikset lasten kouluista. Emme ole yhtään huolissamme, no ehkä hieman, Jasminin, Kristerin ja Kasmirin koulusta. Mutta Jaden eskarista meillä on hyvin ristiriitaiset tuntemukset. Toivottavasti tämä on vain alku kankeutta ja kaikki alkaa sujumaan, kunhan koulut alkavat. Lapsia jännittää ihan mahdottomasti ja pelottaa ja nämä tuntemukset purkautuvat mielen pahoittamisena ja riitelynä. Asioista on yritetty puhua ja koitettu tehdä lapsille mahdollisimman selväksi, mutta mikään ei tunnu helpottavan ehkä se koulun alkaminen on avain kaikkeen.

We started the process of registering the kids to school by calling the Board of Education to find out to which school  our kids would be attending. We found out that Jade would go to Mary L. Tracy where they have the Kindergarten of Orange and the rest of the kids would go to Race Brook school. We also got the instructions to go to the school web pages to fill out the online registrations forms. After this we just waited for the next steps. From Race Brook we got almost immediately an email informing us that we should visit the school so that we could provide them the kids birth certificates and immunization records and the proof of residency in Orange. From Jade's school we only received an email informing us that there would be an orientation day on the 18th. Our neighbor Mia, who had already registered her girls to the same schools, informed us of the additional forms and documents required. She had even printed out all the documents for us.

When we saw the pile of papers we almost got discouraged. How could we ever get trough all of them. Fortunately Mia emphasized that the medical forms would be the most important ones. So Anne took the challeng and started to fill out the required documents. It took a while to get through all of them. Anne finished well passed mid night. From the medical documents we got the impression that here the only allergy a person might have is nut allergy. Apparently all schools are nut free.

We also received a letter from Jade's school where we got more information concerning the orientation day and Jade's bus badge for school transportation. From the letter we got the impression that everything was ready concerning Jade starting school. Well we would find out on orientation day.

Once we got all the papers ready for the other kids we organized a visit to the school on Wednesday 08/17. We have to say we got a very friendly and welcoming reception at the school, even the Administrative Assistant remembered the names of our kids. The staff in the office were very interested in our move to the US, how we were coping  and we even met the principal during our visit. We were able to provide all the requested documents to the school and the files of the kids were up to date. We were also informed that the school had just sent letters to students with more information concerning the teachers and the orientation day on Wednesday 08/24. We were reminded that the school would start on Monday 08/29 and that this day would be a full day, therefore it would be good for the kids to have their own water bottles, snacks and lunch if they would not eat the school lunch for 2,75$. They recommended us to reserve medical examinations for the kids, but they also knew that usually there are long queues to the doctors, so we were told to provide the medical reports as soon as we had them. When we registered our kids we did it according to the Finnish system and while we were at the school they checked if this was fine with them and the principal told us that he had nothing against it. In overall the visit to the school was very nice. We were relieved that everything seemed to be in order and our confidence to the school grew during our visit. Even the kids liked the school, especially the school playground.

Then came Jade's orientation day. With the confidence that we got from the previous day we were very excited when we left to the school. In the letter that we received we were informed that the orientation would take around 30 minutes and it would include a drive around the block with the school bus. Jade was excited and a little bit afraid when we left, but we tried to tell her all we knew about the day and at the same time reassure her that everything would go well. Our brave little girl. We went well beforehand to the school as we wanted to visit the school office to find out what paperwork had to be done. Apparently we were not the only ones. All the kindergartners of Orange came to this school and there was a queue to the office. We decided to split up. Kaj would wait his turn to the office and Anne would go with Jade to the cafeteria to listen to the instructions for the bus ride. The cafeteria was packed as there were the kids of three classes and their relatives. The noise was tremendous. A woman came to the cafeteria with a megaphone and warned everybody that she did not want to use it. This apparently worked as the noise level went down. Without any introduction she went directly to the main rules for the bus ride:

1. Bottoms should stay on the seat
2. Backs should stay on the backrests
3. No moving inside the bus and no touching. Talking was allowed, but no screaming

The bus driver was introduced and the kids were called to the line according to their teachers names. At this point Jade informed that she did not want to go, but Anne tried to cheer and encourage her and guided her to the line. At the same time Anne tried to control herself with a lump in her throat and trying not to show how scared she was. Our small princess going bravely to the bus, without any means to communicate. Once Jade was in the line Kaj came to the cafeteria with news that Anne should go to the office to meet the school nurse who had all Jade's medical papers and needed some more information concerning the papers. Anne went to meet with the nurse and got a ill-mannered reception. She was informed that Jade was not allowed to start school before all her medical documents were in order. We got more documents to be filled out and Anne noticed that the nurse was not able to read the documents we had with us from Finland. The nurse also had a problem understanding that we were coming from Finland as she was constantly asking us from which state were we coming from. We got the feeling that nobody was actually interested in Jade or how she felt and where she was coming from. Everybody who knows Anne will know at this stage that the anger inside her was building up, but she kept her anger in control as she knew how important the first impression is. So we left the office and went to see Jades classroom. Kaj used the opportunity to call doctors office and Anne filled out the new documents received, while Jade inspected the classroom. Jade felt a little disappointed as she was not able to find her name from the class board nor from the table, like the other kids. On our way out Anne returned the documents and informed the nurse that we had been in contact with the doctors office and we would have more news by the end of the day.

On the phone Kaj got instructions that we should visit the doctors office to open accounts for the kids, this was the only way to get things moving. So we drove directly to the practice. This time we got exceptionally good service from the staff in the office and we got the kids registered and they were able to find a time for Jade's examination for Saturday 08/20. On Saturday we all went to the practice and while Jade was visiting the doctor, Kaj and the kids watched TV in the waiting room. The examination started with the nurse checking Jade's hearing, vision (with a method that was very interesting to Anne), blood pressure, height and weight. Everything was in order. They took some blood samples from the finger and they also requested a urine sample. After the nurse had done everything a doctor and an intern came to make an interview. Anne tried to answer every question the best she could and during the questions we found out that our kids would need Hepatitis shots. This was interesting as we tried to find out what shots would be required for the US already from Finland and we were informed that the Finnish vaccination program would be sufficient here. In Finland hepatitis shots are not part of the program, so we were a little surprised. The doctor gave Jade two shots (again Anne was surprised as hepatitis shots are usually combination shots of hepatitis A and B). In overall the visit went very well. The staff was excellent and professional. Jade could say otherwise as she did not like the blood samples and the vaccinations, but after the lollipop she had forgotten all about them. We were happy. We had our papers ready and paid our invoice of 260$.

On Friday 08/19 the kids received the letters from the school. The letters had a lot of positive information concerning the upcoming school year and supply lists that seemed endless. So after Jade doctor's appointment we went to Target and Walmart to buy school supplies. Here most of the school supplies are not only for personal use, but also for classmates and teachers. So when you have three kids in school the amount of supplies is tremendous.

On Monday 08/22 we visited Jade's school to provide the nurse the papers we got from the doctors on Saturday. The nurse reviewed the papers and noticed that Jade did not receive a vaccination for chicken pox. Anne told the nurse that Jade suffered chicken pox in 2015 and this was discussed with the doctor on Saturday and therefore a vaccination was not needed. This wasn't sufficient for the nurse. She needed written proof that a vaccination was not needed. So once more we drove to the doctors office to sort this out. The receptionist told us that she would have to consult the doctor concerning this and as she did not know when she could do this, she took Anne's phone number and she would call us later. As we had some supplies still missing from the list we decided to go shopping in the meanwhile. We got to the second store when Anne got the call from the receptionist. She told us that she will do a paper for us and we could come and pick it up.  The document we got was a copy of Jade's immunization record with hand written statement that Jade had suffered chicken pox and this was diagnosed by the parents themselves. In addition it had a comment that a vaccination would not be needed. With this document we returned to the nurses office and got Jades papers for the school finalized.

On Tuesday 08/23 we received a call from the nurse of Race Brook, asking us if  we could come to the school to clarify the vaccination reports of the older kids. The nurse had tried to read the reports from Finland, but unfortunately she was not able to understand them. We promised to visit the school on Wednesday morning. Anne met the school nurse and after a short visit they were able to come to a conclusion about the papers and vaccinations.  Anne also informed the nurse that the rest of the kids would have their medical examinations mid September and they would get their hepatitis shots then. After the nurses visit we started wondering why the requirements for hepatitis examinations were not known by Finnish authorities. In Finland we contacted the local school nurse and a private medical company concerning the vaccinations and both informed us that the Finnish program was sufficient. If we would have known this beforehand we could have started the shots in Finland and we might have even finished the complete series of shots.

On Wednesday evening we had the orientation for Race Brook. The orientation started by a school presentation by the schools principal. We were also introduced to the schools security personnel and the schools PTA. After this the school had organized a visit to the schools premises. At this stage we had to divide into two groups, as their was a separate group for the starting first graders and a separate group for new students. So we decided that Kaj would go with Kasmir and Jade to meet Kasmirs teacher and Anne would take the tour with Krister and Jasmin. We went through the whole school and even Jasmin was able to meet her teacher. The school tour ended in the school cafeteria where the school served ice cream to the kids. We also had a short chat with the principal and he convinced us that the kids would have a great time in the school and if we ever needed something we could contact him.

We have mixed feelings about the schools. We are not worried, well a little bit, about Jasmin's, Krister's and Kasmir's school, but we are a little bit concerned about Jade's kindergarten. Let's hope that this is only due to schools starting and once everything is settled everything will be fine. Our kid's are both excited and scared and they often show it by being grumpy and by fighting. We have tried to prepare them for school as well as we can, but nothing seems to help. Maybe the key for everything is that schools start.

Vihdoinkin saamme auton / We finally get the car

Kaj aloitti loman maanantaina 15.8. ja kauan odotettu DMV:n soitto tuli tiistaina. Olimme jo lasten kanssa altaalla, kun Hamdenin DMV:ltä tuli soitto,  jossa ohjeistettiin saapuman toimistolle mahdollisimman pian ja ilmoittautumaan tiskille 15. Ei muuta kuin lapset ulos altaasta, syömään nopeasti lounasta ja sit nokka kohti Hamdenia. Kaj tiputettiin DMV:n eteen ja Anne meni lasten kanssa East Rock parkin leikkikentälle odottelemaan. Tällä kertaa ei DMV:llä kauaa nokka tuhissut. Alle puolituntia ja Kaj oli ulkona toimistolta Osavaltio ID mukanaan.

Keskiviikon päätimme pyhittää kokonaan auton hankintaan. Heti aamusta kävimme vakuutusyhtiössä hankkimassa autolle vakuutuksen. Kaj oli jo tutkinut hintoja ennakkoon ja kaikilla oli lähestulkoon samat hinnat. Päädyimme hankkimaan vakuutuksen Geicolta, koska olimme kuulleet, että heidän kauttaan saa vakuutuksen ilman ongelmia. Tämä tieto piti paikkansa. Kaj tuli toimistosta ulos alle puolessa tunnissa vakuutuspaperit mukanaan.

Seuraavana kohteena oli pankki. Autoliike vaati maksuksi pankin hyväksymää shekkiä, joten ei muuta kuin Milford pankkiin tapaamaan meidän vakio pankkivirkailijaa. Kymmenen minuuttia ja meillä oli shekki mukana. Nyt meillä oli kaikki kasassa joten Kaj soitti autoliikkeeseen ja kyseli, koska auto päästäisiin hakemaan. Sovimme tapaamisen kello 14:00, jotta saisivat kaikki vaadittavat paperit kuntoon. Ainoa mitä tarvitsivat ennen tapaamista, oli kopiot Kaj:n ID:stä sekä vakuutustodistuksesta. Kaj otti niistä kuvat ja lähetti ne tekstiviestillä Stevelle meidän automyyjälle.

Olimme niin innoissamme uudesta autosta, että olimme Bradfordissa hyvissä ajoin ennen sopimaamme aikaa. Heti aluksi kävimme tarkistamassa auton ja meille esiteltiin loputkin auton toiminnot, jota meille ei vielä oltu esitelty. Tämän jälkeen Kaj kutsuttiin rahoituspäällikön puheille, jossa täytettiin tuttuun tapaan muutama lomake. Pikaisen arvion mukaan noin kymmenen eri lomaketta, sisältäen autoliikkeen lomakkeet sekä DMV:n lomakkeet. Alle tunnissa kaikki oli hoidettu ja autossa oli kilvet kiinni ja olimme matkalla New Havenin Alamoon palauttamaan vuokra-autoa.

Nyt on taas yksi asia vähemmän josta murehtia kun on oma auto alla. Enää edessä ajokortin hankinta, mutta siitä lisää lähitulevaisuudessa.

Osavaltio ID oli ehkä huonoin sijoitus pitkään aikaan. Saimme kortin neljä päivää ennen ajoharjoittelulupaa ja kun saimme luvat otettiin tuo kortti pois / The state ID must have been the worst investment for a long time. We got the ID four days before the trainers permit and once we got the permits, they took the ID away.

Kaj started his holidays on Monday 08/15 and the long waited call from DMV came on Tuesday morning while we were at the pool with the kids. We were instructed to arrive to the DMV office as soon as possible and to report to the person on cashier 15. We got the kids out of the pool, had a quick lunch and drove to Hamden. Kaj was dropped in front of the office while Anne went to the play ground in East Rock park with the kids. This time the visit to DMV was very short. In less than a half an hour Kaj was out of the office with his state ID.

We decided to dedicate the whole Wednesday to organize everything so that we could get the car. We started with a visit to the insurance company. Kaj had done some research beforehand concerning insurance companies and noticed that there were no big differences in prices between different companies. So in the end we decided to go with Geico, because we had heard that as a foreigner getting an insurance from them would be easy. We found out that this was true. Again less than 30 minutes and Kaj came out of the office with the required insurance documents.

Next visit the bank. The dealer had requested a bank certified check, so we drove to Milford bank to meet with our bank contact. In less than 10 minutes Kaj was out of the bank with the check. Now we had everything that was requested so Kaj gave a call to the dealership to find out when we could go a get the car. Kaj agreed a time for 2:00pm so that the dealership would have enough time to get the documents ready. The only thing they needed before the appointment was a copy of the state ID and the insurance card. Kaj took pictures of the requested documents and sent them to Steve, our dealer, via SMS.

We were so eager the get the car that we arrived to Bradford way before our appointment. The first thing we did with Steve was to check the car and he showed us all the functions in the car that we had not seen before. After this Kaj was invited to meet with Finance Manager. and as usual they filled out / signed several documents, including the dealerships forms and DMV's documents.  In less than an hour we were out of the dealership with the plates on our car and on our way the New Havens Alamo to return the rental car.

Now that we have the car we have one thing less to worry about. The next phase related to the car is to get the drivers licence, but more about that later.

Autoa hankkimassa / Looking for a car

Kaiken muun hässäkän ohella olemme yrittäneet edetä auton hankinnan kanssa. Vaiheethan menivät niin, että ensiksi piti hankkia viisumi. Kun viisumilla saapui maahan sai, passiin sekä tiedostoihin I-94 merkinnän. Tällä merkinnällä ja viisumidokumenteilla pystyi hakemaan sosiaaliturvatunnusta ja heti kun sai sosiaalitunnuksen saa luvan anoa harjoittelulupaa. Kun saimme kaikki nämä vaiheet suoritettua, Kaj kävi DMV:n sivuilla tarkistamassa toimistojen aukioloaikoja ja tarvittavia dokumentteja ja samalla huomasi, että DMV:lle piti varata nykyään aika harjoittelulupaa varten. Ei auttanut muu kuin varata aika. Yllätykseksi ensimmäiset vapaat ajat olivat vasta elokuun lopulla. Kaj kävi kaikki Connecticutin toimistot läpi ja sai loppujen lopuksi varattua ajat Old Saybrookin toimistolta Elokuun 19:sta. Kaiken kukkuraksi DMV:n sivuilla oli jonkinlainen häiriö kun aikoja varattiin, joten Annelle saatiin varattua aika 8:45 ja häiriön jälkeen Kaj aika siirtyi kello 8:30:stä kello 13:30:een. Tämä nyt siirtäisi auton hankintaa kuukaudella ja pidentäisi jälleen vuokra-auton käyttöä.

Emme kuitenkaan antaneet tämä lannistaa meitä. Päätimme silti käydä ennakkoon autokaupoilla tutkimassa minkälaisia autoja oli tarjolla. Kaj oli tehnyt ennakkoon hieman tutkimustyötä ja markkinoilla oli viisi automallia, johonka sopisi yli kuusi matkustajaa ja olisi vielä meidän hintahaarukassa. Päätimme käydä tutkimassa nämä autot: Honda Odyssey, Dodge Grand Caravan, Toyota Sienna, Kia Sedona LX sekä Nissan Questin. Päätimme käydä kaikki autoliikkeet kerralla läpi lauantain  (23.7.) aikana. Aloitimme tottakai Hondan liikkeestä. Emme sen takia, että se oli Honda vaan sen takia, että autoliike oli New Havenin pohjoispuolella. Tutustuimme Hondaan huolella, täytimme kaikenlaisia papereita myyntiliikettä varten ja kävimme tekemässä pienen ajelunkin myyjän kanssa.  Pääsimme itsekkin ajamaan autolla, mutta suljetulla kirkon parkkipaikalla. Meillähän ei ole paikallista korttia.

Dodgen autoliike oli n. 2 km päässä Hondan autoliikkeestä ja se oli seuraavana kohteena. Samanlaiset dokumentit täytimme tässäkin liikkeessä ja kävimme tutustumassa vuoden 2015 mallin Grand Caravaniin. Auto oli samanhintainen kuin Honda, mutta varustetasoltaan huomattavasti parempi sekä säilytystilat olivat monta kertaa paremmat. Lisäksi myyjä kertoi meille, että heille oli juuri saapunut vuoden 2016 Grand Caravan, jossa oli mittarissa n. 14 000 mailia. Valitettavasti auto ei ollut sillä hetkellä nähtävillä, koska oli huoltamon puolella, mutta varustelultaan tämä oli parempi kuin auto jonka näimme. Kerroimme myyjälle ongelmastamme, ettemme voi heti ostaa autoa ennen kuin meillä olisi harjoittelulupa. Myyjä kertoi meille, ettei lupaa välttämättä tarvitse odottaa. Auton voi ostaa osavaltiohenkilökortilla sekä kansainvälisellä ajokortilla ja henkilökorttia varten ei tarvitsisi varata DMV:lle edes aikaa. Samojen dokumenttien pitäisi riittää myös vakuutusyhtiölle. Kiitin myyjää tästä tiedosta ja jatkoimme matkaa. Kävimme pikaisesti lasten kanssa Wendy's ravintolassa ja jatkoimme matkaa Toyotalle.

Kävimme tutkimassa Siennan autoliikkeen pihassa ja totesimme, että se oli selvästi Dodgea ja Hondaa huonompi vaihtoehto, joten siitä emme olleet kiinnostuneet. Päätimme ettemme enää menisi katsomaan Kiaa tai Nissania. Meillä on vuokra-autona Kia Sedona LX, joten se oli meille ennestään tuttu ja Nissan ei missään vaiheessa houkuttanut meitä. Joten päätimme loppupäivän viettää Westfield Ostarilla, Trumbullissa.

Sunnuntaina Kaj tutki DMV:n sivuja ja selvitti osavaltionhenkilötodistusta. Sitä varten tarvittaisiin: Passi, I-94 todistus, muutaman kirjeen, jolla todistettaisiin, että asumme Connecticutissa sekä B-230 lomake. DMV sivuilta löytyi lomake, jolla lomakkeen sai tilata kotiin täytettäväksi. Ei muuta kuin lomake tilaukseen. Lisäksi tutkimme kansainvälistä ajokorttia ja sellaisen saisi AL:lta viikon sisällä ja lomakkeen voi esitäyttää netissä. Ei muuta kuin kortti tilaukseen. Lauantai päivän sekä koko sunnuntain kävimme Anne kanssa keskusteluja autoista ja päätimme vierailla Dodgen liikkeessä vielä maanantaina uudestaan katsomassa tuota vuoden 2016 mallia.

Maanantaina ajoimme Kaj:n töiden jälkeen Branfordiin ja tällä kertaa pääsimme tutustumaan meille tarjottuun autoon. Myyjän tiedot pitivät paikkansa. Auto oli paremmin varusteltu kuin vuoden 2015 malli ja siinä oli vielä takuutkin voimassa. Kaj pääsi vielä koeajamaankin autoa. Myyjä kylläkin istui koko matkan ajan pelkääjän paikalla. Koeajon jälkeen pyysimme autosta vielä lopullisen tarjouksen ja loppujen lopuksi päätimme Annen kanssa, että tämä olisi meidän tuleva auto, joten jätimme autosta käsirahan. Nyt hoitamaan paperit ja vakuutukset kuntoon, niin saadaan autokin käyttöön.

Alongside everything else we have tried to proceed with the purchasing of a car. The overall phases were: First we had to get a Visa. Next phase was to arrive to the country with the visa and get from immigration the I-94. With this and with the visa applications we could apply for a social security number and as soon as we have the social security number we could apply for the drivers license trainers permit. The moment Kaj received the social security card, Kaj visited the DMV pages to see the opening hours of the offices and to see what would be requested to apply for the permit. At this time we noticed that the mode of operation of DMV had changed and now it was necessary to pre-schedule the appointment with DMV. So we started to organize the appointment. To our surprise the first available times were in the end of August. Kaj went through all the DMV's in Connecticut and was able to get appointments for us at Old Saybrook on August 19th. Of course when we were booking the times there was a disruption in the pages and the times we got were 8:45 am for Anne and Kaj had a time for 8:30am, but due to the disruption the time was postponed to 1:30pm. Because our appointments are late August this means we will have to continue using a rental car and we are not able to buy a car before September.    

We did not allow this delay to discourage us, so we decided to visit car dealers anyway to see what type of cars were available in the market. Kaj had done some research in advance and found out that there were five models of cars in the market that were suitable for our family and inside our budget. We decided to go and see these five cars on the Saturday (07/23): Honda Odyssey, Dodge Grand Caravan, Toyota Sienna, Kia Sedona LX and Nissan Quest. Of course we started from the Honda dealer. Not because it was Honda, but because the dealer was Northeast from New Haven. We studied the Odyssey carefully, filled out several documents and took a test drive with the dealer. We even got to drive the car, but on an empty parking lot as we did not have a local drivers license.

The Dodge dealership was only few miles away from the Honda dealer so this was our next stop. We filled out similar documents at this dealership and we went to see a 2015 Grand Caravan which was available at the parking lot. This car was the same price range as the Honda, but the level of equipment's and storage space was way better than in the Honda. In addition the seller told us that they had a 2016 model available which had only 14 000 miles and the level of equipment was higher than the one of the model we saw. Unfortunately we were not able to see this car as it was in the body shop. The told the seller about the problem we were facing and he told us that this wasn't a problem. According to him he had sold cars to foreigners before and in these cases a state ID and international drivers license would be enough. These same documents should be enough for the insurance company as well. We thanked the seller and continued our way to the Toyota dealership. Stopping on the way to Wendy's to have some lunch.

Once we got to the Toyota dealership we saw a Sienna on the parking lot and went to study it. Immediately we noticed that the level of equipment and the overall design was nothing compared with Dodge and Honda, so we decided not to even go inside to ask for more details. At the same time we decided not to continue visiting the other dealerships. We have a Kia Sedona LX as a rental car, so we know enough about this model. And Nissan has never attracted us so we decided to visit the Westfield Mall in Tumbull instead.

On Sunday Kaj visited the DMV pages and investigated what would be needed for a state ID. The requirements were: passport, I-94, proof of residency in Connecticut and a B-230 form had to be filled out. From the DMV pages we were able to find a form which could be used to order the B-230 form home to be filled out. In addition we studied how to get an international drivers license and found out that we could order it from the Finnish Car Federation. We could fill the form online and it would take a week to get it. So we filled the application. The remaining of Saturday and on Sunday we continued discussion with Anne concerning the cars and decided that we would visit once more the Dodge dealership on Monday to evaluate the 2016 model.

On Monday we went to Brandford after Kaj's work and this time the car was available. What the seller told us on Saturday was true, the car had a better equipment level and it still had a valid warranty. Kaj even got to test drive the car. Of course the seller sat on the passenger seat the whole time. After the test drive we asked for a final offer for the car and after a short negotiation we decided that this would be our new car and paid a deposit for it. Now the only thing we have to do is get the state ID, International Drivers license and insurance and we will be able to get the car out of the dealership.

Muuttokuorma saapuu / Our container arrives

Ensimmäinen viikkomme täällä sai lisää hyviä uutisia kun Kaj:n sosiaaliturvakortti saapui postissa lauantaina. Kaj:lla oli tiedossa työmatka Kanadan puolelle ja kortin saapuminen tiesi sitä, ettei hakemuksen kanssa tulisi enää ongelmia Kaj:n poistuessa maasta. Anne käytti lauantaipäivän hyödykseen vierailemalla outletissä Mian kanssa. Sillä aikaa Kaj vietti lasten kanssa aikaa altaalla ja vierailemalla muutamassa huonekaluliikkeessä etsimässä parvekkeelle kalusteita. Yleisesti ottaen täällä on halvempaa kuin Suomessa, mutta huonekalut ovat täällä järkyttävän kalliitta. Vierailimme noin kymmenessä liikkeessä ja halvimmillaan puisen parveketuolin olisi saanut 545 dollarilla. Onneksi Anne luki paikallista lehteä ja huomasi Christmas Tree shopin mainoksen, jossa myytiin kokonaista parvekesettiä (sisältäen tuolin, pöydän sekä jalkatuen) alle 100 dollarilla. Käytimme siis lauantai iltapäivän parvekekalusteita ostellessa. Lauantai oli myös tyttöjen nimipäivä sekä meidän hääpäivä. Joten Kaj vei lapset aamulla Smoothie Kingiin ja iltapäivällä kävimme Puerto Vallartassa syömässä Meksikolaista koko perheen voimin. Olimme jopa niin hurjia, että kävimme ostamassa paikallisesta Alkosta viiniä, huomataksemme kotona, ettei meillä ollut viinipullonavaajaa.

Sunnuntaina olikin sitten Kristerin syntymäpäivä. Aamupäivän vietimme altaalla ja iltapäivällä kävimme taas ostoksilla, mukaan lukien Home Deposta ostamassa sähkövääntimen, jotta saisimme kasattua parvekekalusteemme. Synttäreiden kunniaksi kävimme iltapäivästä Dip Topissa jäätelöillä. Muuten ihan mukava paikka, mutta pehmikset olivat niin isot, että suurin osa jäätelöstä valui lasten vaatteille ja maahan.

Maanantaiaamuna olimme suunnitelleet menevämme jälleen kerran New Havenin sosiaalitoimistoon, mutta Kaj töiden takia siirsimme sen tiistaille. Heti tiistaiaamusta lähdimme ajelemaan kohti New Havenia ja tällä kertaa löysimme helposti perille, olimmehan olleet täällä juuri edellisellä viikolla. Tällä kertaa menimme kaikki rakennukseen sisään, koska emme tienneet mitä papereita Anne tulisi tarvitsemaan mukanaan. Tällä kertaa meitä ennen oli 32 ihmistä ja melkein kaksi tuntia saimme odottaa, ennen kuin Anne kutsuttiin tiskille. Heti kättelyssä meille selvisi, ettei Anne saisi sosiaalitunnusta, koska ei tee täällä töitä. Selitimme, että Anne tarvitsee tunnuksen ajokorttia varten, mutta virkailija totesi, että käytäntö on muuttunut ja Annelle kirjoitettiin virallinen kirje, jolla hän voisi sitten hakea ajokorttia. Paluumatkalla New Havenista Kaj poikkesi vielä pankissa anomassa itselleen pankkikorttia ja n. 15 minuutin jälkeen Kaj palasi autolle pankkikortti mukanaan. Kaj tiputettiin vielä kiireesti töihin, koska Mikolla ja Kajlla oli vielä edessä reilun kuuden tunnin ajo Montrealiin.

Kaj oli Kanadassa tiistai iltapäivästä torstai iltapäivään. Työmatkan ajan Anne ja lapset viettivät suurimman osan ajasta kotona ja uima-altaalla. Torstaina Kaj saapui kotiin firman pakettiautolla Esa mukanaan. Esa oli tyhjentämässä asuntoaan ennen perjantain paluuta Suomeen. Esalta saimme liudan tavaroita, mukaan lukien ruokapöydän ja siihen kuuluvat tuolit, rasvakeittimen, silitysraudan sekä laudan, mausteita, pesuaineita sekä joulukuusen jalan.

Perjantaina odoteltiinkin kontin saapumista. Niemen yhteistyökumppani oli ilmoittanut Kajlle alkuviikosta, että kuorma saapuisi perjantaina kello 11 ja 12 välillä. Riippuen ruuhkista. Kuorma ei jostain syystä saapunut sovittuna ajankohtana ja lapset alkoivat jo kyllästyä odotteluun, joten menimme altaalle uimaan. Kerkesimme altaalla olemaan n. 40 minuuttia kun rekka ajoi parkkipaikalle kello 12:40. Lapset ja Anne jäivät altaalle ja Kaj lähti muuttajien kanssa selvittelemään  miten toimittaisiin. Kajlle lyötiin laatikkolista käteen ja sai tehtäväkseen kirjata ylös jokainen laatikko, joka tulisi ovesta sisään. Asunnossa oli yksi mies joka aloitti sänkyjen sekä sohvan kasaamisen, sitä mukaan kun osia tuli sisään. Sillä välin kun kolme neljä muuta miestä kantoi laatikkoja sisään. Laatikot oli sisällä reilussa tunnissa ja jokainen laatikko saapui perille ja ehjänä. Lopun ajasta miehet kasasivat sänkyjä. Kun laatikot oli saatu sisälle, oli asunnossa ollut mies kasannut jo meidän sängyn sekä osan sohvasta. Suurin haaste oli lasten kerrossängyt, joiden kasaamiseen viidellä miehellä meni yli puolitoistatuntia. Ongelmana oli, ettei meillä ollut mitään ohjeita niiden kasaamisen eikä meistäkään ollut paljon apua, kun emme muistaneet miten ne oli kasattu. Sillä aikaa kun miehet kasasivat sänkyjä Kaj ja Anne tyhjenisivät laatikoita, eteenkin astioita, varmistaen, että ne olivat kaikki ehjiä. Kokonaisuudessaan miehillä meni n. kolme tuntia ja he lähtivät kohti New Yorkia vähän ennen kello 16:00 taskussa muuttomiehille varattu tippi. Olemme joutuneet oppimaan, että palveluista pitää maksaa tippiä.

Laatikoita on edelleen ympäri asuntoa, mutta suurimman osan olemme saaneet jo tyhjennettyä. Enimmäkseen tyhjentämättä on vaatelaatikoita, mutta niiden kimppuun pääsemme heti kun saamme Ikeasta sopivat lipastot ja vaatehuoneeseen sopivat laatikot niiden tyhjentämiseen. Hitaasti hyvä tulee.

Our first week here got additional good news when Kaj's social security card arrived on Saturday. Kaj already had a pre-booked business trip to Canada  for the following week and leaving the country would not delay this process anymore. Anne used Saturday to visit an Outlet north from New Haven with Mia. Meanwhile Kaj spent the day with the kids at the pool and by visiting furniture stores with the kids looking for seat to our balcony. We have noticed that most of the materials here are cheaper than in Finland, but furniture here is shockingly expensive. We have visited almost 10 different stores and the cheapest balcony chairs we like would have costed 545 USD. Fortunately Anne read the local newspaper and saw an add from Christmas Tree shops which had similar chairs we liked included in a balcony set. The whole set meaning chair, table and leg support costed 99 USD. Therefore we used the rest of the afternoon buying balcony furniture. Saturday was also the girls nameday (celebrated in Finland) and our 11 wedding anniversary. Therefore Kaj took the kids in the morning to Smothie King to enjoy great smoothies and in the evening we went to have dinner at Puerto Vallarta. Excellent Mexican food. We were even so wild that Kaj visited the liquor store and bought a bottle of red wine. Only problem was that we realized at home we did not have a wine bottle opener.

Sunday was Kristers birthday. So we spent the whole morning at the pool. Of course we had to go shopping again as Kaj had to visit Home Depot to buy a screwdriver so that we could assemble our balcony furniture. To celebrate Krister's birthday we visited Dip Top for ice creams. A very nice place, but the ice creams were so big  and the weather so hot that most of the ice cream melted on the kids cloths and to the ground.

On Monday we had planned to visit the social security office once more to apply for Anne's social security card, but due to Kaj's work we had to postpone it to Tuesday. So early Tuesday morning we woke up early and drove to New Haven. This time we found parking and the federal building easily as we had been there a week before. This time we decided to go in the whole family, because we did not know what papers they would ask from Anne and if Kaj's social security number was also needed. This time there were 32 people before Anne and we had to wait almost two hours before Anne was called to the cashier. Right from the beginning we found out that Anne was not alegable to get a social security number as she was not allowed to work in the US. We explained that we needed the card for DMV and for the drivers licence, so they printed out a formal letter to us mentioning she was not alegable for social security and with this letter we could apply for a training permit. On the way back from New Haven Kaj stopped to the bank to apply for a debit card and only after 15 minutes he was out from the bank with the actual card. Anne dropped Kaj to the office as he had a six hour drive ahead of him with Mikko to Montreal.

Kaj was on his business trip from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon. While Kaj was away Anne and the kids spent most of their time at home and at the pool. Kaj arrived home on Thursday with the companies van and Esa was with him. Esa was emptying his apartment as he was returning to Finland on Friday. Esa was so kind and provided us with the kitchen table and chairs. We also got a deep fryer, iron and ironing board, spices, soaps, detergants and to top it all the support for the Christmas tree.

Friday we spent waiting for our container. The transporting company called Kaj early on the week to inform us that the truck would arrive on Friday between 11 am to 12 pm. Depending on the traffic. For some reason the truck did not arrive on the informed time frame and the kids started to get frustrated so we went to the pool to wait for the truck. We had spent 40 minutes at the pool when the truck arrived to the parking lot. Anne and the kids stayed at the pool and Kaj went to see how everything would proceed. Kaj was instructed to register every box that came inside the door. One man stayed inside the assemble the sofa and beds, meanwhile four guys carried the boxes to the apartment. According to Kaj's list all boxes arrived and non of them broke during transportation. It took more than an hour to get everything inside and once all boxes were in the apartment, our bed had been assembled and the sofa. The remaining of the time the men used to assemble the kid's bunk beds. The problem was we had no instructions for the beds and of course we did not remember how they were assembled. While the men were figuring out the beds, Kaj and Anne tried to empty as many boxes as possible. Especially the boxes with the dishes to see if they were still unbroken. In overall it took around three hours and the men left towards New York at 4:00 pm with a tip in their back pockets. This is one more thing we have had to learn is to give tips.

We still have some boxes around the apartment, but we have been able to empty most of them. Most of the boxes have clothing and we are not able to empty them before we go to Ikea to buy few drawers and storage boxes to the closets. Its better to go slow and steady with all of this.

Ensimmäinen viikko Yhdysvalloissa / First week in the US

Matka meni hyvin. Liki yhdeksän tunnin lennolla kaikki jaksoivat mukavasti, eikä kukaan ärsyttänyt toista. Maahan tulo muodollisuudet sujuivat kivasti, vaikka jono oli pitkä. Ehkä siinä oli niin paljon ihmeteltävää, ettei kukaan ehtinyt hermostua. Lentokenttäjunalla ajettiin autovuokraamolle. Siinä se olikin homma pitää neljä lasta reppuineen ja seitsemän matkalaukkua samassa kurssissa... Mutta vuokra-auto löytyi ja päästiin matkaan. Parin tunnin ajon aikana osa lapsista torkkui. Mutta riitaakin jo saatiin, ehkä vähän väsymys, nälkä ja jännitys painoivat. Ajatuksena oli, että perillä hotellissa Orangessa, käytäisiin syömässä, mutta sietokyvynraja oli jo ylitetty ja viisainta oli käydä kaupasta hakemassa jotakin purtavaa ja laittaa lapset nukkumaan. Viiteen mennessä aamulla, kaikki olivat jo hereillä. Iski jetlagia päälle. Hotellin aamupalalle pääsi vasta seitsemältä, joten nautittiin television tarjonnasta... tv-shopista...  Hotellin aamupala oli melkoista Hei hulinaa... Pojat eivät malttaneet pysyä aloillaan, niin paljon oli nähtävää ja ihmeteltävää ympärillä. Istutettiin lapset hotellin television ääreen katsomaan 101 dalmatialaista ja kerättiin omat tavarat läjään. Kannettiin tavarat autoon ja lähdettiin hakemaan kotimme avaimet Teknoware inc.istä Milfordista ja Anne laitettiin rattiin... 

Kyllä sitä vielä autoa osasi ajaa, vaikka oli automaatti ja hurjan iso auto sekä muutamia uusia liikenne"sääntöjä" ( esim. vapaa oikea) ja ihan muutama auto, kaista, liikennemerkki ja liikennevalo enemmän kuin Villähteellä... ;) Äkkiä sitä liikenteeseen tottui. Kun avaimet oli haettu, ajettiin kotiin viemään matkalaukut ja katsastamaan kulmat, samalla jo kuumeisesti mietittiin nukkumisjärjestelyjä, syömistä, jne... Finlaysonin unipussi -lakanat oli matkalaukussa, vuodesohva, fatboy ja pari ilmatäytteistä patjaa saatiin lainaan Teknowaren kautta ja tyynyt oli lähdettävä ostamaan... Kauppoja on vaikka kuinka paljon, ei voida ihan summan mutikassa lähteä jokaista koluamaan tyynyjen toivossa, tähänkin saatiin vinkkejä Teknowarelta. Post Mallilla käytiin nappaamassa lounas Subwaysta, se kun on täältä Milfordista lähtöisin. Ensimmäinen Subway tarjoilee leipiään edelleen Milfordin keskustassa. Ruokakaupassakin piti käydä ja sieltä keksiä jotain sellasita syötävää, mikä ei juurikaan tarvitse valmistusvälineitä... Tässä vaiheessa oltiin vielä siinä käsityksessä, että kaasu tullaan erikseen kytkemään, jotta liesi toimii... Kaiken shoppailun keskellä käydessämme asunnollamme Grand Reservessä ja viemässä viimeisiä tarvittavia liitteitä vuokrasopimukseen, nähtiin kaasufirman auto ja Kaj lähti selvittämään oliko hän tulossa meille ja kävi ilmi, että kaasu oli kytketty jo aikoja sitten ja nyt työntekijä tuli, kun oli saanut sen käsityksen, että meillä on jokin ongelma asian kanssa. Ilta tuli vääjäämättä ja lapset alkoivat olemaan jo ihan kyllästyneitä kaikkeen asioilla juoksemiseen. Vietiin heidät lyhyesti uimaan altaalle ja kylvyn ja iltapalan jälkeen nukkumaan... Mikäs hätä tässä valmiissa maailmassa?

Perjantai aamuna 1.7. Kaj lähti töihin Teknowarelta lainassa olleella pakettiautolla. Ja puolen päivän aikaan Annen piti osata ajaa kotoa Kajn työpaikalle lapset kyydissä hakemaan Kaj ja lähteä New Haveniin sosiaalitoimistoon anomaan Kajlle sosiaaliturvatunnusta. Seikkailtiin auto parkkiin parkkihalliin ja lähdettiin etsimään oikeaa rakennusta/paikkaa/kerrosta. Oikea paikka löydettiin ja Kaj lähti rakennukseen sisään asiaansa hoitamaan ja Anne jäi lasten kanssa läheiseen puistikkoon aikaa tappamaan. Noin tunti puistossa oleskeltua osui kohdalle sade kuuro, Anne ja lapset siirtyivät rakennuksen seinustalle (jonne Kaj oli mennyt) sadetta pitelemään... Kotvan kuluttua sade lakkasi ja siirryttiin rakennuksen viereen penkeille... Siinä kului ainakin tunti ja jälleen siirryttiin takaisin puistikkoon, josko siellä kuitenkin oli lapsille enemmän tekemistä... Nälkäkin jo kurni ja Kajlta tuli viesti, että vielä kestää... Aluksi jonossa oli ollut 30 ennen häntä ja jono oli edennyt ihan mukavasti, sitten palvelupisteitä oli suljettu muutama ja homma hidastui. Luukulla oli käynyt jos jonkin moista asiakasta ja odotustilassa oli nähnyt yhtä ja toista. Lopulta Kaj kuitenkin sai hakemuksensa toimitettua ja pääsi ulos rakennuksesta, jonka jälkeen suunnattiin läheiseen kahvilaan (myöhäiselle) lounaalle. Kaj sai ajaa pois, Anne oli jo tulomatkasta saanut tarpeekseen liikenteessä sompailusta. Paluu matkalla pysähdyttiin Goldstone creamaryn jäätelöbaariin jätskille. Samaisen ketjun jätskibaari oli meille tuttu jo muutaman vuoden takaiselta Singaporen reissulta. 

Elämä on täällä alkun yhtä shoppailua, jatkuvasti jotain puuttuu ja on lähdettävä etsimään mistä kaupasta sopiva ja sopivaan hintaan tarvittava löytyisi... Lapsille kevyemmät kengät, lapsille hatut, aurinkorasvaa, syötävää, juotavaa, astioita tiskattavia "kertakäyttöisiä", pyyhkeitä, käsisaippuaa, pyykinpesuainetta, tiskiainetta, -harja, siivousliinoja, kevyempää vaatetta, jne, jne, jne... Osta, osta, osta... Ahdistaa, olisi pitänyt ymmärtää kantaa näitäkin kotoa Suomesta... Myöhäistä murehtia, ostetaan uusia...

Ensimmäisen viikon aikana juostiin varmasti likemmäs sadassa kaupassa mm. New Havenin Ikeassa, josta ostettiin kattila ja pannu setti, jolla päästiin kokkaamaan. Ja tutustumaan kaasulieden käyttöön. Naapuri rapun Kososet ovat olleet korvaamattomana apuna, ollaan saatu laitteiden käyttöneuvoja ja kauppavinkkejä ja seuraa. 

Kauppojen käytännöt vaihtelevat suuresti. Yhdestä kaupasta lähes tyrkytetään asiakaskorttia, toisesta sitä ei saa ennen kuin on paikallinen ajokortti henkilötodistuksena. Meidän passit ja suomalaiset ajokortit ovat täyttä siansaksaa täällä, eivätkä kelpaa kuin harvoissa tapauksissa. Pankkikorttia täältä pankista ei ole vielä saatu, raha-automaatteja saa hakea, pankista nostetaan käteistä shekillä ja kaiken kukkuraksi Kajn suomalainenkin pankkikortti lakkasi käsittämättömästä syystä toimimasta. Kaikki helpottuisi, kun saataisi ne sosiaaliturvatunnukset ja sen jälkeen ajokortit. Mutta ennen ajokortteja on vielä edessä kirjallinenkoe, autokoulu ja ajokoe... Eli vähintään kuukauden päivät menee "hieman" hankalamman kautta.

Jottei alku olisi ihan painajaismaista lapsille ollaan yritetty mahdollisimman paljon käydä uima-altaalla ja tutustumassa ympäristöön (autolla ajeltu ympyrää, käyty merenrannalla 3.7., tutustuttu naapuri tontilla olevaan PEZin tehtaaseen 5.7. ja kaupoissa toteutettu lasten toiveita järkevyyden rajoissa). Maanantaina 4.7. täällä juhlittiin itsenäisyyspäivää, mutta lähiseudun pienet kunnat järjestivät juhlailotulituksia eri aikoihin, jotta voisivat saada mahdollisimman paljon ihmisiä liikkeelle. Jos olisi halunnut, olisi saattanut juhlailotulituksia löytyä noin viikon verran joka päivälle. Itse mentiin Kososten kanssa katsomaan Orangen ilotulitukset 2.7... Jonotettiin parkkipaikalle noin puoli tuntia. Itse ilotulitus kesti noin 25-30 minuuttia ja oli kyllä näkemisen arvoinen. Paluu kotiin kesti 45 minuuttia. 

Kajn ensimmäinen viikko täällä päättyi työmatkaan Bostonissa, jonka piti kestää vain työpäivän, mutta toisin kävi... Muun perheen viikko päättyi tietoon, että jo kovasti kaivatut tavaramme merikontissa tulevat 15.7.

Our flight to the United States went well. The flight took almost nine hours and everybody enjoyed themselves. The kids did not even fight during the flight. The immigration went smoothly even though the line was long. Maybe the kids had so much to wonder about that they forgot about the time. We picked up our luggage and took the Airtrain to the car rental. This was an adventure once more organizing four kids and seven bags through all the stairs, doors, elevators and the parking lot to the car. It did not take us long to find our car and pack all our luggage and backpacks and ourselves to the car and once more we were on our way. During our two hour drive most of the kids fell asleep, but some of them started to show signs of hunger, tiredness and excitement by starting some smaller fights. Our original plan was to drive to the hotel and then go somewhere to eat, but during the drive we decided that it would be better to stop at Stop and Shop to buy some food to the room. We put the kids to bed straight after dinner and all of us woke up a 5:00 am. Jet-lag hit us. As the breakfast would start at 7:00 am there was nothing to do but to see what the TV had to offer. TV shop.  At seven we went for breakfast and our kids were like small squirrels. Bouncing back and forth. There was just too much to investigate and wonder. Once we returned to the room we started to collect our stuff. Meanwhile our kids watched 101 Dalmatians from TV. Once the movie ended we packed everything to the car and drove to Teknoware Inc to collect our apartment keys and Anne got the opportunity to drive for the first time.

Anne realized that driving here wasn't that different from Finland, even though the car was bigger with an automatic sift, some new rules like free right and some cars, lanes, traffic lights and traffic signs more than in the village where we lived in Finland. Fortunately you get used to the traffic. Once we had the keys we drove home to see our apartment and to figure out our sleeping arrangements, lunch etc. We got a Fatboy beanbag, two air beds and a sofa bed from Kaj's colleagues. Anne had bought Finlayson sleeping sacks from Finland so the only thing we needed were pillows. There were so many stores we could visit for pillows, but fortunately we got good tips from Teknoware Inc people. We stopped for lunch at Post Mall department store where we went to Subways as Milford is the place where Subway has its world headquarters. We used the opportunity also to visit the grocery store to buy food that would not require cooking as we had nothing to cook food with. We were at the assumption that the gas in our apartment needed to be connected. Once we returned home we visited the office of Grand Reserve to finalize our leasing contract, when the gas companies car drove to the parking lot. Kaj went to ask if they were coming to connect our gas. We found out that the gas was already connected weeks ago and now the representative came as he thought we had a problem with the connection. Kaj tried to explain that the gas companies sale representative told us that the gas was disconnected and had to be reconnected and that we had no problems. After a short discussion with the gas company worker we decided to go and test the pool and take the kids to bed after a evening swim.  

On Friday morning 07/01/2016 Kaj went to work and returned the company van that we had borrowed to transport the sofa and air bed. Kaj printed out necessary papers for the social security card and in the afternoon Anne had to remember how to drive to the office to pick up Kaj, so that we could go to New Haven to visit the social security office. It took us a while to find a parking place, the correct location and correct floor. Once we found all of them Kaj went to the social security office while Anne and the kids went to a park close by. It took Kaj almost two hours to apply for the card. When he went inside there were 30 people before him and it seemed that everything was going smoothly, but after an hour and 30 minutes they closed two of the cashiers and everything slowed down. Meanwhile Anne and the kids played in the park and tried to keep dry during short showers. Once Kaj came out we stopped for lunch in the close proximity of the federal building. Anne did not want to continue driving so Kaj was put behind the wheel. On the way back we stopped for ice cream  at Coldstone Creamary the same chain we visited several times on our trip to Singapore in 2012. 

To start our lives here has required continuous shopping as we noticed that we are missing something all the time. In addition we have to find out where to buy the materials we need in reasonable prices. New shoes and hats for the kids, sun protection, something to eat and drink, dishes, towels, soap, detergents, liquid soap and brush for dishes, clothing etc. Buy, Buy, Buy... We should have bought some of these from Finland, but it is too late now. We believe we visited over hundred stores on our first week, including the Ikea in New Haven where we bought a pan and kettle so that we could make food at home. Our neighbors Mikko and Mia have been invaluable help to us as they have provided us help with everything.

Here every store has its own opening times and standards. Some stores give you loyalty cards easily as some require a local drivers license. Our passports and Finnish driving licenses are worth nothing and in minor cases are accepted as identifications. Until now we have not received debit cards from our bank as this requires us to have the social security cards, we have to really search for ATM's that work with our Finnish cards, we had to withdraw money from the bank by using checks and to top it all Kaj's Finnish Mastercard stopped working. Everything will get easier the moment we have our social security numbers and after that our drivers license. But before that we have to go to apply for learners permit, participate on a lecture for driving  and take a driving test. Meaning it will be over a month before everything is settled.  

We have tried to keep the kids happy by visiting the pool everyday and we even took them to the PEZ factory which is just few yards from our home. We have gone to the beach, bought the kids some clothing and toys and explored the areas close by. On Monday 07/04 we celebrated the Independence day and the every county had fireworks starting almost a week before the actual date. We could have seen fireworks everyday, but we decided to visit the fireworks of Orange on 07/02 with family Kosonen. We queued to the parking lot almost 30 minutes, the fireworks lasted over 25 minutes and it took us 45 minutes to get home.

Kaj's firts week ended on a business trip to Boston. Originally the meeting was supposed to last the morning, but it took a little bit longer and Kaj arrived home after 9:00pm. Fortunately Kaj also had good news when he got home, our container would arrive the following week Friday 07/15
