DMV ja harjoittelulupa / DMV and learners permits

Syyskuun 19:sta saapui viimein ja olimme varautuneet viettämään koko päivän Old Saybrookissa, josta olimme varanneet DMV:lle ajat kirjallisia kokeita varten. Koska Annella oli aika varattu 8:45, jouduimme lähtemään Orangesta jo ennen kahdeksaa. Saavuimme toimistolle n. 8:30 ja menimme koko porukan voimin sisään, jotta Kaj näkisi miten homma toimii. Olihan Kaj:lla aika varattuna samaiseen testiin 13:30. Heti aluksi Anne otatti itsestään kuvan automaatissa, josta sai numerokoodin ja liittyi muiden kanssa jonoon odottamaan vapaata tiskiä. Puolentunnin odotuksen jälkeen Anne pääsi tiskille ja aloitimme papereiden läpikäynnin. Harjoittelulupaa vartenhan tarvittiin:

1. Kaksi kappaletta henkilötodistusta (Passi, virkatodistus, paikallinen ID)
2. Maassa oleskelulupatodistus (Viisumi sekä I-94)
3. Kaksi kirjettä, joissa postileima ja nimi, joilla todistettiin, että asumme Connecticutissa
4. DMV:ltä saatu lomake

Virkailija ei ollut aikaisemmin hoitanut ulkomaalaisten hakemuksia, joten paperityössä meni normaalia pitempään ja hänellä oli hieman ongelmia Annen kirjeiden kanssa, mutta loppujen lopuksi kaikki saatiin kuntoon ja Anne jäi odottamaan vuoroaan itse testiin. Ei kauaakaan kun Annea kutsuttiin. Testi aloitettiin näkötestillä, jossa lueteltiin kirjaimia mikroskoopin näköisestä laitteesta. Tämän jälkeen Anne siirtyi takahuoneeseen tekemään kirjallista koetta. Koe suoritettiin tietokoneella monivalintakyselynä ja se sisälsi 25 kysymystä, joista viisi saisi olla väärin. Annella meni testiin suunnilleen kymmenen minuuttia ja virheitä hänellä oli kolme kappaletta eli testi meni läpi. Seuraavat vaiheet menivätkin sitten ripeästi. Aluksi Anne kutsuttiin tiskille varmistamaan tietonsa, hetki odottelua ja Anne kutsuttiin antamaan allekirjoitus ja hänestä otettiin kuva korttia varten. Taas muutama minuutti odottelua ja sen jälkeen kortti oli valmis. Yksi hoidettu, seuraava edessä.

Nyt kuluttamaan aikaa Old Saybrookiin. Paljon ei kaupungissa ollut nähtävää, mutta kävimme katsomassa Lynde Pointin majakkaa, kävimme keskustassa syömässä pizzaa ja Kaj tiputti Annen ja lapset Harvey Beachille siksi aikaa kun hän kävisi testissä. Aamusta oppineena Kaj saapui toimistolle yli puolituntia ennen varattua aikaa. Kaj sai valokuvan, jonotuksen ja paperi asiat hoidettua niin, että kaikki oli valmiina 13:20. Kutsu testiin tuli 13:40 ja 20 minuuttia myöhemmin Kaj oli toimistolta ulkona harjoittelulupa kädessä. Testi tulos 24/25. Kaj noukki Annen ja lapset rannalta ja ajoimme Milfordin Five Guys ravintolaan juhlistamaan hyviä koe tuloksia.

Driver's permits

September 19th finally arrived and we were prepared to spend the whole day in Old Saybrook, where we had reserved the times from DMV for the learners permit tests. Because Anne had her time a 8:45 am we had to leave from Orange well before 8:00 am. As there was no traffic we arrived to the DMV office at 8:30 and we went inside with the strength of the whole family, so that Kaj would see what to expect in the afternoon when he had his appointment. The first thing to do was to take a picture in the photo booth and once we had the photo ticket we joined the queue to the counter. After 30 minutes Anne was called to the counter and we could start to go through the required paperwork:

1. Two forms of ID (Passport, marriage certificate, State ID)
2. Proof that we were legally in the country (I-94 and Visa)
3. Proof of residency in Connecticut (Two letters with our names and with postal stamps)
4. Required DMV form

It took the clerk a little longer to go through Anne's papers as she had not managed applications of foreigners before and she had some problems with Anne's letters, but in the end everything was settled. It didn't take long after this that Anne was called to take to test. The test started with a vision test which was done by looking into a machine that looked like a microscope and by listing letters. After this Anne went to a separate room to perform the actual test. The test was done with a computer and it involved 25 multiple choice questions. 5 incorrect answers were allowed. It took Anne 10 minutes to do the test and in the end she had three mistakes, meaning she passed the test. After this the next phases went rather quickly. Anne was invited to the counter to verify that the information provided to DMV were correct, few minutes of waiting and she was invited to give a sample of here singature and they took here picture for the permit. Again few minutes of waiting and then she picked up her permit from the clerk. One permit down, one still to go.

As Kaj's appointment was a 1:30 pm we went to Old Saybrook the spend some time. There was not much to see in the town. We went to see the Lynde Point lighthouse, we visited the town center and had some pizzas for lunch and on the way to DMV Kaj dropped Anne and the kids to Harvey's Beach. With the experience from the morning Kaj went to the DMV office more than 30 minutes before the appointment time. Kaj took the required photo, queued to the counter and had all necessary papers ready at 1:20 pm. He was invited to the test at 1:40pm and 20 minutes later he was out of the office with his learners permit. Test result 24/25. Kaj picked up Anne and the kids from the beach and we drove to Milford's Five Guys to celebrate our new permits.

We still have to take a 8 hour drug and alcohol course so that we can obtain a CS-1 form and then we can take the required road test so that we get our final driver's license.
