Lasten ensimmäinen kouluviikko / Kid's first week of school

Maanantai aamuna lapset olivat tarmoa täynnä, kaikki oli valmiina, vaatteet, eväät, reput, pullot, äidin kirjoittamat laput tärkeistä asioista... Tätä oli odotettu ja jännitetty. Bussiin lapset nousivat jännittyneinä. Kaikki sentään samaan bussiin. Koulupäivä oli mennyt muilla mukavasti, mutta Kasmirille oli tullut ikävä kotiin ja oli itkeskellyt. Opettaja oli hakenut Kristerin apuun ja Kasmir oli viettänyt tovin Kristerin luokassa isoveljen kanssa. Jasmin sai läksyjäkin, niitä yritettiin kotona tehdä.

Illalla Kasmir jo aloitti itkeskelyn, yritti kovasti kieltäytyä koulusta, mutta iltarutiineilla Kasmir rauhoittui ja saatiin hänet nukkumaan. Yö meni yllättävän hyvin, luultavasti lapset olivat päivästä niin väsyneitä, että nukkuivat hyvin. Voi vaan kuvitella millaista on joutua täysin vieraaseen ympäristöön, täysin vieraaseen koulumaailmaan, missä et ymmärrä mitä sinulle puhutaan, mitä tapahtuu, miksi ja olet tilanteessa yksin.

Tiistai alkoi itkulla, Kasmir jännitti ja ikävöi, eikä mikään tuntunut auttavan. Lopulta itku tarttui myös Jadeen. Kyynelehtivät lapset saatettiin bussiin ja matkaan. Lasten omat luokanopettajat ja englannin opettaja yrittävät kovasti auttaa lapsia alkuun. Mutta kaikki on niin erilaista verrattuna Suomeen, että sopeutuminen vie aikansa.

Lapset tuovat paljon ja useita info paketteja, täytettäviä lomakkeita, kaavakkeita... Niitä lukiessa ja asettaessa tärkeysjärjestykseen, samalla autetaan Jasminia läksyissä ja selvitellään riitoja. Iltapäivällä väsymys, jännitys ja kaikki muu purkautuu riehaantumisena ja riitelynä. Kukaan ei oikein kestä toistaan ja kaikki ärsyttää.

Keskiviikko, nyt lapset ovat jo ymmärtäneet, että kouluun mennään joka päivä ja päivät kestää kauan. Bussi hakee n klo 8.00. Koulu alkaa klo 8.25. Koulupäivä loppuu klo 15.00 ja kotona he ovat n 15.25. Kasmiria itkettää. Sanoo, että päivä on liian pitkä. Tartuttaa itkun Jadeen ja on tuskastuttavaa lähettää itkuiset lapset matkaan. Iltapäivällä lapsilla on bussilta kiire sisälle. Kaikilla on vessahätä, kun eivät osaa pyytää lupaa käydä vessassa koulussa, eivätkä osaa täyttää vessalupalappua. Vessakäyntien jälkeen, kaikki yrittää kertoa päivästään yhtä aikaa ja sekametelisoppa on valmis, kaikkia ärsyttää ja riidat leiskuu. Läksyjä pitäisi tehdä, äidin apua tarvitaan paljon. Jälleen pino kaavakkeita ja lupalappuja täytettäväksi.

Torstai, eikä Kasmir itkenyt enää ihan niin lohduttomasti. Koulun jälkeen illalla oli uusien perheiden kouluun tutustuminen pasta dinner. Tavattiin rehtori, koulutoimen johtaja, englannin opettaja ja koulukavereiden perheitä. Kaikki ovat hyvin kiinnostuneita meidän lapsista ja halukkaita auttamaan. Kaikki kehuvat lapsia ja uskovat heihin. Perjantai, eikä itku tunnu helpottavan vaikka edessä on pitkä viikonloppu. 

Maanantai on Labor Day ja vapaapäivä. Kokonainen viikko takana, kaikilla ollut paljon uusia tilanteita ja oppimista. Välillä vanhempana miettii, mihin sitä on lapsikatraansa laittanut, mutta haluaa uskoa, että tästä seuraa vielä jotakin hyvää. Sitä luulisi, että yhden vieraan kielen opettelu (englannin) riittäisi, mutta ei, lukujärjestyksessä on myös espanjaa. Oppitunnit ovat 30min mittaisia, päivään mahtuu välipalatauko (Jadella kaksi), lounastauko ja yksi 30min välitunti. Varsinaista lukujärjestystä ei ole, vain erityistuntien päivät on ilmoitettu kotiin. Paljon on erilaisia projekteja tehtävänä, esim. aikakapseli ja matematiikka opetetaan viitosilla eli kaikki on viiden ryhmissä ja niitä sitten lasketaan suuntaan ja toiseen. Tämä vähän tuottaa haastetta, kun matematiikka Suomessa on erilaista.

Koko viikonloppu vältettiin kouluasioita ja yritettiin tehdä jotakin kivaakin. Jasminilla oli kuitenkin läksy tehtävänä eli ihan ei voitu koulua unohtaa.

Tiistaina Kasmirin lohduton itku jatkui edelleen, mutta se oli lähinnä kotona, bussi matkan aikana olo oli jo helpottanut. Iltapäivällä koulusta tullessa, Kasmir ilmoitti, että itkut on nyt itketty, enää hän ei aio itkeä liian pitkää päivää tai ikävää. Tiistai iltana oli vanhempainilta, jonne Anne meni tapaamaan opettajia. Taas saatiin kehuja lapsista ja vino pino papereita täytettäväksi ja vanhempainvartti aikoja muistettavaksi. Keskiviikko aamuna Kasmir nousi reippaana ja hymyilevänä bussiin. Tämä on siis mahdollista voittaa... Reseptinä aika ja pienet askeleet.

On Monday morning all our kids were full of energy and everything was ready: clothes, lunch, backpack, water bottles and papers where Anne had written few important phrases for the day. This was the day we had waited and feared. The kids got on the bus with excitement. Fortunately all of the kids were picked up by the same bus. Apparently the first day had gone well, except Kasmir got home sick and started crying during the day. Kasmir's teacher had tried to help Kasmir by bringing Krister to the class to spend time with him. On the first day Jasmin even got homework and we spent the evening by going through the tasks. Before dinner Kasmir started to cry again and he informed us that he did not want to go to school anymore. Fortunately during the evening routines we got him to calm down and in the end he fell asleep. Apparently the kids were tired after the first day as they slept through the night. It is difficult to imagine how they feel at school where the environment is completely new, the school system is totally different and you are not able to communicate and you do not understand what is happening and you are all by yourself.

Tuesday started again with a cry. Kasmir started to feel home sick first thing in the morning and he feared what would happen during the school day. Nothing seemed to help. In the end the fear spread to Jade and she also started crying. It was very hard to escort two crying kids to the bus and see them go to school. Fortunately the kids have extremely good teachers who are trying to make them feel at home and ESL teachers are aiding them to learn English. But still everything is different and it will take time before the kids readjust.

The kids bring a lot of homework after the day along with notifications, information slips and form packages to be filled out. While reviewing all these papers, we try to help the kids with their homework. At the same time the kids without homework usually get into fights and you try to be in two places at the same time. Helping with homework and being a referee.

On Wednesday the kids understood that they would have to go to school everyday and everyday would be a long day. The bus comes to pick up the kids at 8:00am. School starts at 8:25am. School ends at 3:00pm and the kids arrive home at 3:25pm. Kasmir arrived home crying and telling us that the school days a way too long. In Finland Kasmir was accustomed to four hour days. In addition all the kids come out of the bus in a hurry as all of them have to go to the bathroom. During the school day the kids do not know how to ask permission to go the toilet and apparently every time you want to go to the bathroom you have to fill out a permission slip. Of course our kids do not know how to fill out the slips. After the pit stops everybody wants to tell how their day went and as all of them try to speak at the same time it does not take long until somebody is fighting. During the evening Anne tries to help everybody with their homework and and the same time fill out forms and permission slips.

Thursday came and Kasmir continued crying, but went to the bus bravely. After school we were invited to visit the school for a pasta dinner organized by the schools PTA. We met the principal, the schools superintendent, the schools ESL teachers and the families of our kids friends. It was amazing how interested everybody was of our family and how all of the staff worked together to help our kids. All of them admired our kids and believed in them. Friday morning and Kasmir's distress does not seem to wear off even though the weekend was coming.

A complete school week behind us and all of us had learned a lot. Already during the first week, we as parents, thought what are we putting our kids through. In addition to learning English they have to study Spanish. Lesson are 30 minutes long. During the day kids have one short snack break (Jade has two) and a lunch break. One 30min recess. The kids do not have an actual timetable, only special classes are informed beforehand. In addition they have multiple projects going on and math is thought differently here than in Finland. All of this requires a lot from the kids, but also a lot from the parents.

On the weekend we tried to avoid everything that had to do with school, but as Jasmin had homework we could not avoid it completely. Fortunately Monday was Labor day so the kids had a long weekend. On Tuesday the day started as before, Kasmir's distress continued. Apparently he only cried at home and stopped once he got on the bus. In the afternoon when they returned from school Kasmir informed Anne that their is no need for him to continue feeling sad and he will now stop crying. On the same evening the school had a parents night where Anne went to meet with the teachers. Again our kids were praised and we got a load of forms to be filled out. Wednesday morning Kasmir kept his promise. He got out of bed with enthusiasm and got on the bus with a big smile. So it seems we will be able to win this. As long as we take on step at a time.
