Ensimmäinen viikko Yhdysvalloissa / First week in the US

Matka meni hyvin. Liki yhdeksän tunnin lennolla kaikki jaksoivat mukavasti, eikä kukaan ärsyttänyt toista. Maahan tulo muodollisuudet sujuivat kivasti, vaikka jono oli pitkä. Ehkä siinä oli niin paljon ihmeteltävää, ettei kukaan ehtinyt hermostua. Lentokenttäjunalla ajettiin autovuokraamolle. Siinä se olikin homma pitää neljä lasta reppuineen ja seitsemän matkalaukkua samassa kurssissa... Mutta vuokra-auto löytyi ja päästiin matkaan. Parin tunnin ajon aikana osa lapsista torkkui. Mutta riitaakin jo saatiin, ehkä vähän väsymys, nälkä ja jännitys painoivat. Ajatuksena oli, että perillä hotellissa Orangessa, käytäisiin syömässä, mutta sietokyvynraja oli jo ylitetty ja viisainta oli käydä kaupasta hakemassa jotakin purtavaa ja laittaa lapset nukkumaan. Viiteen mennessä aamulla, kaikki olivat jo hereillä. Iski jetlagia päälle. Hotellin aamupalalle pääsi vasta seitsemältä, joten nautittiin television tarjonnasta... tv-shopista...  Hotellin aamupala oli melkoista Hei hulinaa... Pojat eivät malttaneet pysyä aloillaan, niin paljon oli nähtävää ja ihmeteltävää ympärillä. Istutettiin lapset hotellin television ääreen katsomaan 101 dalmatialaista ja kerättiin omat tavarat läjään. Kannettiin tavarat autoon ja lähdettiin hakemaan kotimme avaimet Teknoware inc.istä Milfordista ja Anne laitettiin rattiin... 

Kyllä sitä vielä autoa osasi ajaa, vaikka oli automaatti ja hurjan iso auto sekä muutamia uusia liikenne"sääntöjä" ( esim. vapaa oikea) ja ihan muutama auto, kaista, liikennemerkki ja liikennevalo enemmän kuin Villähteellä... ;) Äkkiä sitä liikenteeseen tottui. Kun avaimet oli haettu, ajettiin kotiin viemään matkalaukut ja katsastamaan kulmat, samalla jo kuumeisesti mietittiin nukkumisjärjestelyjä, syömistä, jne... Finlaysonin unipussi -lakanat oli matkalaukussa, vuodesohva, fatboy ja pari ilmatäytteistä patjaa saatiin lainaan Teknowaren kautta ja tyynyt oli lähdettävä ostamaan... Kauppoja on vaikka kuinka paljon, ei voida ihan summan mutikassa lähteä jokaista koluamaan tyynyjen toivossa, tähänkin saatiin vinkkejä Teknowarelta. Post Mallilla käytiin nappaamassa lounas Subwaysta, se kun on täältä Milfordista lähtöisin. Ensimmäinen Subway tarjoilee leipiään edelleen Milfordin keskustassa. Ruokakaupassakin piti käydä ja sieltä keksiä jotain sellasita syötävää, mikä ei juurikaan tarvitse valmistusvälineitä... Tässä vaiheessa oltiin vielä siinä käsityksessä, että kaasu tullaan erikseen kytkemään, jotta liesi toimii... Kaiken shoppailun keskellä käydessämme asunnollamme Grand Reservessä ja viemässä viimeisiä tarvittavia liitteitä vuokrasopimukseen, nähtiin kaasufirman auto ja Kaj lähti selvittämään oliko hän tulossa meille ja kävi ilmi, että kaasu oli kytketty jo aikoja sitten ja nyt työntekijä tuli, kun oli saanut sen käsityksen, että meillä on jokin ongelma asian kanssa. Ilta tuli vääjäämättä ja lapset alkoivat olemaan jo ihan kyllästyneitä kaikkeen asioilla juoksemiseen. Vietiin heidät lyhyesti uimaan altaalle ja kylvyn ja iltapalan jälkeen nukkumaan... Mikäs hätä tässä valmiissa maailmassa?

Perjantai aamuna 1.7. Kaj lähti töihin Teknowarelta lainassa olleella pakettiautolla. Ja puolen päivän aikaan Annen piti osata ajaa kotoa Kajn työpaikalle lapset kyydissä hakemaan Kaj ja lähteä New Haveniin sosiaalitoimistoon anomaan Kajlle sosiaaliturvatunnusta. Seikkailtiin auto parkkiin parkkihalliin ja lähdettiin etsimään oikeaa rakennusta/paikkaa/kerrosta. Oikea paikka löydettiin ja Kaj lähti rakennukseen sisään asiaansa hoitamaan ja Anne jäi lasten kanssa läheiseen puistikkoon aikaa tappamaan. Noin tunti puistossa oleskeltua osui kohdalle sade kuuro, Anne ja lapset siirtyivät rakennuksen seinustalle (jonne Kaj oli mennyt) sadetta pitelemään... Kotvan kuluttua sade lakkasi ja siirryttiin rakennuksen viereen penkeille... Siinä kului ainakin tunti ja jälleen siirryttiin takaisin puistikkoon, josko siellä kuitenkin oli lapsille enemmän tekemistä... Nälkäkin jo kurni ja Kajlta tuli viesti, että vielä kestää... Aluksi jonossa oli ollut 30 ennen häntä ja jono oli edennyt ihan mukavasti, sitten palvelupisteitä oli suljettu muutama ja homma hidastui. Luukulla oli käynyt jos jonkin moista asiakasta ja odotustilassa oli nähnyt yhtä ja toista. Lopulta Kaj kuitenkin sai hakemuksensa toimitettua ja pääsi ulos rakennuksesta, jonka jälkeen suunnattiin läheiseen kahvilaan (myöhäiselle) lounaalle. Kaj sai ajaa pois, Anne oli jo tulomatkasta saanut tarpeekseen liikenteessä sompailusta. Paluu matkalla pysähdyttiin Goldstone creamaryn jäätelöbaariin jätskille. Samaisen ketjun jätskibaari oli meille tuttu jo muutaman vuoden takaiselta Singaporen reissulta. 

Elämä on täällä alkun yhtä shoppailua, jatkuvasti jotain puuttuu ja on lähdettävä etsimään mistä kaupasta sopiva ja sopivaan hintaan tarvittava löytyisi... Lapsille kevyemmät kengät, lapsille hatut, aurinkorasvaa, syötävää, juotavaa, astioita tiskattavia "kertakäyttöisiä", pyyhkeitä, käsisaippuaa, pyykinpesuainetta, tiskiainetta, -harja, siivousliinoja, kevyempää vaatetta, jne, jne, jne... Osta, osta, osta... Ahdistaa, olisi pitänyt ymmärtää kantaa näitäkin kotoa Suomesta... Myöhäistä murehtia, ostetaan uusia...

Ensimmäisen viikon aikana juostiin varmasti likemmäs sadassa kaupassa mm. New Havenin Ikeassa, josta ostettiin kattila ja pannu setti, jolla päästiin kokkaamaan. Ja tutustumaan kaasulieden käyttöön. Naapuri rapun Kososet ovat olleet korvaamattomana apuna, ollaan saatu laitteiden käyttöneuvoja ja kauppavinkkejä ja seuraa. 

Kauppojen käytännöt vaihtelevat suuresti. Yhdestä kaupasta lähes tyrkytetään asiakaskorttia, toisesta sitä ei saa ennen kuin on paikallinen ajokortti henkilötodistuksena. Meidän passit ja suomalaiset ajokortit ovat täyttä siansaksaa täällä, eivätkä kelpaa kuin harvoissa tapauksissa. Pankkikorttia täältä pankista ei ole vielä saatu, raha-automaatteja saa hakea, pankista nostetaan käteistä shekillä ja kaiken kukkuraksi Kajn suomalainenkin pankkikortti lakkasi käsittämättömästä syystä toimimasta. Kaikki helpottuisi, kun saataisi ne sosiaaliturvatunnukset ja sen jälkeen ajokortit. Mutta ennen ajokortteja on vielä edessä kirjallinenkoe, autokoulu ja ajokoe... Eli vähintään kuukauden päivät menee "hieman" hankalamman kautta.

Jottei alku olisi ihan painajaismaista lapsille ollaan yritetty mahdollisimman paljon käydä uima-altaalla ja tutustumassa ympäristöön (autolla ajeltu ympyrää, käyty merenrannalla 3.7., tutustuttu naapuri tontilla olevaan PEZin tehtaaseen 5.7. ja kaupoissa toteutettu lasten toiveita järkevyyden rajoissa). Maanantaina 4.7. täällä juhlittiin itsenäisyyspäivää, mutta lähiseudun pienet kunnat järjestivät juhlailotulituksia eri aikoihin, jotta voisivat saada mahdollisimman paljon ihmisiä liikkeelle. Jos olisi halunnut, olisi saattanut juhlailotulituksia löytyä noin viikon verran joka päivälle. Itse mentiin Kososten kanssa katsomaan Orangen ilotulitukset 2.7... Jonotettiin parkkipaikalle noin puoli tuntia. Itse ilotulitus kesti noin 25-30 minuuttia ja oli kyllä näkemisen arvoinen. Paluu kotiin kesti 45 minuuttia. 

Kajn ensimmäinen viikko täällä päättyi työmatkaan Bostonissa, jonka piti kestää vain työpäivän, mutta toisin kävi... Muun perheen viikko päättyi tietoon, että jo kovasti kaivatut tavaramme merikontissa tulevat 15.7.

Our flight to the United States went well. The flight took almost nine hours and everybody enjoyed themselves. The kids did not even fight during the flight. The immigration went smoothly even though the line was long. Maybe the kids had so much to wonder about that they forgot about the time. We picked up our luggage and took the Airtrain to the car rental. This was an adventure once more organizing four kids and seven bags through all the stairs, doors, elevators and the parking lot to the car. It did not take us long to find our car and pack all our luggage and backpacks and ourselves to the car and once more we were on our way. During our two hour drive most of the kids fell asleep, but some of them started to show signs of hunger, tiredness and excitement by starting some smaller fights. Our original plan was to drive to the hotel and then go somewhere to eat, but during the drive we decided that it would be better to stop at Stop and Shop to buy some food to the room. We put the kids to bed straight after dinner and all of us woke up a 5:00 am. Jet-lag hit us. As the breakfast would start at 7:00 am there was nothing to do but to see what the TV had to offer. TV shop.  At seven we went for breakfast and our kids were like small squirrels. Bouncing back and forth. There was just too much to investigate and wonder. Once we returned to the room we started to collect our stuff. Meanwhile our kids watched 101 Dalmatians from TV. Once the movie ended we packed everything to the car and drove to Teknoware Inc to collect our apartment keys and Anne got the opportunity to drive for the first time.

Anne realized that driving here wasn't that different from Finland, even though the car was bigger with an automatic sift, some new rules like free right and some cars, lanes, traffic lights and traffic signs more than in the village where we lived in Finland. Fortunately you get used to the traffic. Once we had the keys we drove home to see our apartment and to figure out our sleeping arrangements, lunch etc. We got a Fatboy beanbag, two air beds and a sofa bed from Kaj's colleagues. Anne had bought Finlayson sleeping sacks from Finland so the only thing we needed were pillows. There were so many stores we could visit for pillows, but fortunately we got good tips from Teknoware Inc people. We stopped for lunch at Post Mall department store where we went to Subways as Milford is the place where Subway has its world headquarters. We used the opportunity also to visit the grocery store to buy food that would not require cooking as we had nothing to cook food with. We were at the assumption that the gas in our apartment needed to be connected. Once we returned home we visited the office of Grand Reserve to finalize our leasing contract, when the gas companies car drove to the parking lot. Kaj went to ask if they were coming to connect our gas. We found out that the gas was already connected weeks ago and now the representative came as he thought we had a problem with the connection. Kaj tried to explain that the gas companies sale representative told us that the gas was disconnected and had to be reconnected and that we had no problems. After a short discussion with the gas company worker we decided to go and test the pool and take the kids to bed after a evening swim.  

On Friday morning 07/01/2016 Kaj went to work and returned the company van that we had borrowed to transport the sofa and air bed. Kaj printed out necessary papers for the social security card and in the afternoon Anne had to remember how to drive to the office to pick up Kaj, so that we could go to New Haven to visit the social security office. It took us a while to find a parking place, the correct location and correct floor. Once we found all of them Kaj went to the social security office while Anne and the kids went to a park close by. It took Kaj almost two hours to apply for the card. When he went inside there were 30 people before him and it seemed that everything was going smoothly, but after an hour and 30 minutes they closed two of the cashiers and everything slowed down. Meanwhile Anne and the kids played in the park and tried to keep dry during short showers. Once Kaj came out we stopped for lunch in the close proximity of the federal building. Anne did not want to continue driving so Kaj was put behind the wheel. On the way back we stopped for ice cream  at Coldstone Creamary the same chain we visited several times on our trip to Singapore in 2012. 

To start our lives here has required continuous shopping as we noticed that we are missing something all the time. In addition we have to find out where to buy the materials we need in reasonable prices. New shoes and hats for the kids, sun protection, something to eat and drink, dishes, towels, soap, detergents, liquid soap and brush for dishes, clothing etc. Buy, Buy, Buy... We should have bought some of these from Finland, but it is too late now. We believe we visited over hundred stores on our first week, including the Ikea in New Haven where we bought a pan and kettle so that we could make food at home. Our neighbors Mikko and Mia have been invaluable help to us as they have provided us help with everything.

Here every store has its own opening times and standards. Some stores give you loyalty cards easily as some require a local drivers license. Our passports and Finnish driving licenses are worth nothing and in minor cases are accepted as identifications. Until now we have not received debit cards from our bank as this requires us to have the social security cards, we have to really search for ATM's that work with our Finnish cards, we had to withdraw money from the bank by using checks and to top it all Kaj's Finnish Mastercard stopped working. Everything will get easier the moment we have our social security numbers and after that our drivers license. But before that we have to go to apply for learners permit, participate on a lecture for driving  and take a driving test. Meaning it will be over a month before everything is settled.  

We have tried to keep the kids happy by visiting the pool everyday and we even took them to the PEZ factory which is just few yards from our home. We have gone to the beach, bought the kids some clothing and toys and explored the areas close by. On Monday 07/04 we celebrated the Independence day and the every county had fireworks starting almost a week before the actual date. We could have seen fireworks everyday, but we decided to visit the fireworks of Orange on 07/02 with family Kosonen. We queued to the parking lot almost 30 minutes, the fireworks lasted over 25 minutes and it took us 45 minutes to get home.

Kaj's firts week ended on a business trip to Boston. Originally the meeting was supposed to last the morning, but it took a little bit longer and Kaj arrived home after 9:00pm. Fortunately Kaj also had good news when he got home, our container would arrive the following week Friday 07/15

Viime hetken tunnelmia / Last minute news

Viimeinen viikko Suomessa... Vietettiin alkuviikko Anne ja Kaj kotona ja lapset mummin ja vaarin kanssa mökillä. Anne ja Kaj juoksivat erinäisiä asioita ja Kaj oli vielä töissä. Maanantaina oli se aiemmin mainittu suurlähetystö reissu. Tiistaina käytiin hoitamassa pankkiasioita ja Anne kävi tekemässä tulevaa leivontaurakkaa varten kauppareissun. Keskiviikkona Anne pyöräili kotoa ja Kaj tuli töistä suoraan hoitamaan vakuutusasioita keskustaan. Torstaina Kaj vielä kävi työpaikalla ja lähti sitten mökille lasten ja mummin ja vaarin seuraksi viettämään juhannusta. Anne jäi kotiin. Torstain suurin uutinen oli passien saapuminen postiin ja passeissa oli kauan kaivatut viisumit.

Mökillä juhannusta vietettiin perinteisesti kalastellen, saunoen, uiden ja grillaillen.

Kotona Anne järjesteli tavaroita ja keräili yhteen vielä mukaan lähteviä. Perjantaina alkoi urakka ja Anne paistoi kaksi kuuden munan kakkupohjaa valmiiksi ja keitti täytteen kinuskin tekeytymään. Melko hiljaista oli kotona ja rauhassa sai puuhailla niitä näitä. Lauantaina Annen äiti tuli auttelemaan lähtöpuuhissa. Anne valmisti kuusi kakkua koristelu valmiiksi, ennen seitsemää aamulla aloitti ja viimeisen kakun työnsi jääkaappiin klo 17.30. Samaan aikaan Annen äiti pesi saunan, kylpyhuoneen, kodinhoitohuoneen, siivosi keittiötä, eteistä, lastenhuonetta, pesi pyykkiä ja tiskejä. Puoli kuudelta oli jo kiljuva nälkä ja piti lähteä etsimään ruokapaikkaa. Lahdessa ei löytynyt helposti muuta auki olevaa ravintolaa kuin Amarillo. Syötiin sitten siellä ja kierrätyspisteelle roskia viedessä huomattiin, että isommat marketit olivat auki ja vallan klo 21 asti. Tuntui hassulta, että ravintoloita ei ole auki, mutta kaupat ovat. Vielä ehdittiin iltakävelyllekin. Sitten oltiin jo niin väsyneitä, että painuttiin unten maille. Sunnuntaiaamuna piti herätä varhain koristelemaan kakut ja kuitenkin tuntui, että kiire tulee. Anne oli luvannut toimittaa kakut tilaajalle ennen yhdeksää. Kakut olivat perillä puoli yhdeksän aikaan ja saattoi huokaista helpotuksesta. Urakka oli ohi. Aika pian kakkujen viennin jälkeen Annen äidin piti lähteä jatkamaan omaa lomailuaan ja Anne jäi odottelemaan perhettä kotiin.

Perhe saapui klo 16 aikoihin. Anne keräsi pyykit ja laittoi pyykkikoneen pyörimään ja samalla vauhdilla lähdettiin vielä moikkaamaan kaveriperhettä. Siellä otettiin vielä juhannuksen jälkilöylyjä, lapset luttasivat järvessä ja lämmittelivät saunassa ja aikuiset paransivat maailmaa. Iltasella kotona Anne vielä ripusti pyykit kuivumaan ja laittoi toisen koneellisen pyörimään, lapset laitettiin nukkumaan ja Kaj katseli jalkapalloa. Jasmin kovasti jo jännittää lähtöä ja illat menee itkeskelyksi, lähdön syitä ja seurauksia puidaan ja puhutaan...

Maanantai 27.6. toiseksi viimeinen päivä kotona. Kaj oli töissä ja kotona lapset keräsivät pihaleluja pussiin ja kävivät lahjoittamassa ne Lintulanraitin leikkipuiston hiekkalaatikolle. Ja jäivät puistoon myös leikkimään. Anne leikkasi vielä nurmikon, ripusti pyykkejä ja pesi lisää. Lounaan jälkeen Krister lähti vielä kaverille leikkimään. Kaj kun tuli töistä lähdettiin postiin selvittämään muuttoilmoitusasiaa ja hoitamaan viimeisiä tarvike ostoksia. Nyt, kun meillä ei ole kuin yksi auto, joutuu vähän suunnittelemaan, miten asioita hoidetaan. Ruoka puoli on tällä hetkellä vähän sitä sun tätä, kun yritetään tyhjentää jääkaappia ja pakastinta, eikä enää varauduta syömään useampana päivänä samaa ruokaa. Tällä hetkellä tärkeintä on, ettei ylijäämiä jäisi. Loppuillan ohjelmassa oli jälleen lasten nukkumaan laitto, Jasminin jännitysitkut, jalkapallo ja pyykit.

Tiistaina heräsimme aikaisin, koska tekemistä oli vielä ylin kyllin. Ohjelmassa oli ulkovaraston sekä vessan siivoomista, auton puhdistusta, pihan siistimistä, tavaroiden järjestelyä sekä tietysti vielä pakkaamista. Liuta ihmisiä kävi vielä jäähyväiset jättämässä ja lisäksi moni ihminen soitti meille toivottaakseen meille hyvää matkaa. Itkuiltakaan ei tällä kertaa vältytty, eteenkään kun jätimme jäähyväiset Kajn vanhemmille. Päivän aikana kävimme vielä apteekissa hakemassa tarvittavat reseptilääkkeet ja pakatessa huomasimme, että laukut eivät riitä, joten Kaj kävi hakemassa meille vielä muutaman ylimääräisen matkalaukun. Läksiäislahjaksi saimme naapureilta lahjakortin Villähteen Lähdegrillille, joten kävimme siellä syömässä päivällistä koko perheen voimin. Kiitos naapureille mukavasta lahjasta ja Bottas hampurilaista voimme suositella kaikille. Taksi on tilattu keskiviikkoaamulle 9:30. Siitä se matka sitten alkaa. Seuraava kirjoitus tuleekin jo sitten rapakon takaa.

Aureen mökki / Summer house of Aure

Our last week in Finland. Beginning of the week Anne and Kaj were at home and the kids were with Kaj's parents in our families summer housed in Aure. Monday was the day when we visited the embassy. (Previous blog) On Tuesday we went to the bank to organize our matters and Anne went to the grocery store to buy the materials for the baking order. On Wednesday Anne bicycled to the Lahti center and Kaj came directly to from work to the insurance company where we reorganized our insurances. On Thursday Kaj went to the office in the morning and in the afternoon he left Aure to spend Midsummer with his parents and our kids. Anne stayed at home. The man news of Thursday wast that our passport arrived to the post office and the passports had our visas in them.

In the summer house Midsummer was spent in the traditional way. Fishing, going to sauna, swimming and having barbecues.

At home Anne used her time organizing our stuff and gathered articles to the living room that would come with us. On Friday she started baking. She baked two six egg cakes and cooked the butterscotch filling. It was very quiet at home and nobody was in the way. On Saturday Anne's mother came to help with the final preparations. Anne prepared all six cakes ready for decoration, she started a 7:00 am and the last cake went into the fridge at 5:30pm. At the same time Anne mother washed the sauna, bathroom, the utility room, kitchen, entrance, the kid's room, washed clothes and did the dishes. The moment the last cake was in the fridge both realize they were hungry and there was nothing else to do, but look for a place to eat. The only restaurant open in Lahti was the Mexican restaurant Amarillo, so there they went. On the way back home they dropped materials to the recycling center and realized that the markets were still open. Funny that most of the restaurants were closed, but the markets were opened until 9:00 pm. Just before going to bed we went for a short walk in Villähde. On Sunday Anne woke up early to decorate the cakes as she had promised to deliver the cakes to the customer at 9:00 am.Even though the early wake up it felt that there was not sufficient time, but fortunately the cakes were delivered on time. 30 minutes before the deadline. Finally a moment to relax. Job well done. Almost immediately after delivering the cakes Anne's mother had to return home and Anne started to wait for the rest of the family to return home.

Kaj and the kids arrived home a 4:00pm. The moment they got in Anne gathered all the clothing and put them into the washer and we went straight back in the car and drove to Paimela to visit our friends. We had a midsummer after party, the kids went swimming and enjoyed the warmth of the sauna. Meanwhile the parents sat in the terrace and had some coffee and pancakes. The moment we got home Anne put the clothes to dry and a new set of clothing to wash and Kaj put the kids to bed and started to watch football. During the last few days Jasmin has been nervous about our departure. Every evening she has gone to bed crying and we have tried to talk with her about the reasons why we are leaving and what great things this will bring us along the way.

Monday 06/27 our second to last day at home. Kaj went to work and the kids gathered all the toys from outside and donated most of them to the playground in Lintulanraitti. They also used the opportunity to stay and play in the playground. Anne gut the grass for the last time and again washed clothing. After lunch Krister went to play with one of his friends and the rest of the family do final arrangements in the post office and to buy last minute supplies. Now that we have only one car it is little bit complicate to organize things. Also our eating arrangements are what they are at the moment. We try not to buy too much food to the fridge and at the same time we try to use everything we already have in the fridge. The schedule of the evening included putting the kids to bed, comforting Jasmin before she was able to fall asleep, watching football and washing clothing.

On Tuesday we woke up early as we had plenty to do. Our program for the day included: cleaning up the toilet and the outdoor storage, cleaning the car, arranging the garden, organizing furniture an of course packing. Many people came and bid us farewell. In addition many people called us to wish us good luck. Naturally we were not able to go through the day without shedding a tear, especially when we said good bye to Kaj's parents. During the day we went to the pharmacy to buy necessary medication and when we started packing we realized we were not able to fit all of our stuff in the luggage we had so Kaj had to go an buy us few new bags. During our farewell party we received from our neighbors a gift certificate to the Lähde grill in Nastola, so we went for dinner the whole family. A big thanks to our neighbors for this gift and we have to recommend the Bottas burger to everybody. We have reserved the taxi to pick us up as 9:30 am on Wednesday, so that we can start our journey. The next blog text we will write will be written from overseas.

Työmatka, läksiäiset ja suurlähetystön haastattelu / Business trip, farewell party and the interview in the Embassy

Kesäkuun alulle kerääntyi kaikenlaista. Koska haastattelumme siirtyi 20:lle päivälle, joutui Kaj käymään vielä kerran Yhdysvalloissa ennen perheen yhteistä muuttomatkaa. Työmatkan Kaj aloitti 5.6. ja lensi New Yorkin kautta suoraan San Fransiscoon ja sieltä vuokrasi auton ja jatkoi matkaa Sacramentoon. Koska New Yorkissa jatkolento lähti 3 tuntia myöhässä, meni koko matkaan yli 26 tuntia. Alku viikko meni asiakaskäyntien parissa ja loppu viikko Teknowaren toimistolla valmistellen perheen muuttoa. Ennen matkaa saimme asunnon vuokrasopimuksen sähköisesti allekirjoitettua. Sopimus oli 6 sivuinen ja siinä oli 62 sivua liitteitä. Mukaan lukien: vuoteiden syöpäläisliite, huume, marijuana sekä rikos lisäys lisäksi asunnon käyttö- sekä käytösohjeet. Matkan aikana Kaj sai vuokranantajan allekirjoittaman version ja sillä pääsimme viimeistelemään asunnon kaasuliittymän avauksen. Lopultakin meillä oli kaikki tarvittava asunnon avaimien saantiin ja Kaj kävi noutamassa nipun maanantaina 13.6. Tiistaina 14.6. Kaj lensikin jo takaisin Suomeen.

Torstaina vietimme Kristerin synttäreitä/läksiäisiä. Olimme kutsuneet Kristerin luokkakavereita, harrastuskavereita ja muita kavereita maagisiin juhliin. Kristerille oli tärkeää vielä nähdä kavereita ja viettää muistoihin painuva hetki kaikkien kanssa. Juhliin vetonaulaksi kutsuttu taikuri oli todella onnistunut valinta. Liki 20 lasta nautti tarjotuista herkuista ja taikurin esityksestä.

Lauantaina oltiin kutsuttu niitä ihmisiä (naapureita, ystäviä, läheisiä, tärkeitä ihmisiä) käymään joiden kanssa ei oltu vielä ehditty tavata. Anne oli luvannut pitää muurikka lettupannun kuumana, jäätelön kylmänä ja kahvia sekä mehua kyytipojaksi. Lettujen paisto aloitettiin jo vähän jälkeen yhdeksän vesi sateessa, mutta onneksi on iso terassi joka on katettu... Lettujen ja jäätelön seuraksi kaivettiin pakastimesta omatekoisia soseita ja itse poimittuja marjoja. Kesken päivän huomattiin, etteivät letut riitä ja pikaisesti taikinaa tehtiin lisää ja lopulta kaikkiin taikinoihin meni 7 litraa maitoa. Taikinoita oli kolme erilaista: gluteeniton, laktoositon ja tavallinen. Lähes kaikki letut meni ja vieraita kävi lähes 70. Päivään mahtui vähän kyyneleitä, paljon naurua ja todella paljon tsemppiä. Meillä on täällä mahtavia ihmisiä ympärillä, kyllä tällä tuen määrällä mennään vaikka läpi harmaan kiven ja tullaan vielä takaisinkin...

Sunnuntaina mummi ja vaari hakivat lapset mukaansa mökille Aurekoskelle, että Anne ja Kaj pääsevät maanantaina hoitamaan viisumiasiaa Yhdysvaltojen suurlähetystöön Helsinkiin.

Maanantaina lähdettiin noin klo 7.30 ajelemaan kohti Helsinkiä. Ajettiin auto parkkiin city Forumiin ja kuuliaisina suurlähetystön ohjeille jätettiin kaikki muu omaisuus autoon ja otettiin vain vaaditut paperit mukaan (kaksi mappia). Ennen autolta lähtöä katsottiin google mapsista vähän suuntaa, että löydetään perille Yhdysvaltojen suurlähetystöön Itäiselle Puistotielle. Lähdettiin kävellen suuntimaan kohteeseen. Matkaa oli sopivasti ja eteen tuli useita tietöitä, joten ihan joka kohdassa ei tiedetty missä ollaan, mutta lopulta perille löydettiin 15 minuuttia etuajassa. Sovittu aika oli klo 10. Passit annettiin vartijalle tarkastettaviksi ja ulko-ovesta sisään kutsuttiin yksi kerrallaan, nimellä turvatarkastukseen. Tässä kohtaa oli tiedote, että puhelin pitää sulkea ja jättää "narikkaan"... No meidän puhelimet olivat muutaman kilometrin päässä autossa parkkihallissa... Mutta turvatarkastuksessa otettiin myös kellot "narikkaan", se on elektroninen laite. Turvatarkastuksesta vartija saattoi sisäpihan läpi seuraavalle ovelle, jossa seuraava vartija otti vastaan ja neuvoi ottamaan vuoronumeron. Vuoronumero laitteessa oli neljä vaihtoehtoa ja niiden sisältöä ei ollut mitenkään avattu sekä Anne että Kaj päätyivät ottamaan numeron jonka otsikossa luki immigrant visas. Oli ainoa otsikko, jossa viitattiin viisumeihin. Odotusaulassa istui ihmisiä ja meidän jälkeen tuli ihmisiä ja jostain käsittämättömästä syystä kaikki pääsivät asiaansa hoitamaan ennen meitä. 40 minuutin odottelun jälkeen alettiin jo ihmetellä syytä ääneen, jonka jälkeen aulassa ollut vartija neuvoi, että meillä oli väärä vuoronumero olisi pitänyt älytä ottaa non-immigrant numero. Jonotusnumeroa vaihdettuamme jäimme jälleen odottelemaan, mutta mitään ei tapahtunut. Kajlla alkoi jo ahdistaa ja ei enää malttanut istua. Lopulta vartija lupautui kysymään, ottavatko meidät vielä haastatteluun. Hetimiten puhelun jälkeen meidät kutsuttiin luukulle kolme. Virkailija kertoi jo ihmetelleensä, minne me olimme jääneet ja pahoitteli, että jouduimme odottelemaan. Kaivoimme mapista hänen pyytämänsä paperit ja passit, jonka jälkeen hän neuvoi meidät odottamaan. Istuttiin tovi lehtiä selaillen, kunnes meidät kutsuttiin luukulle kaksi, jossa meidän piti antaa sormenjäljet ja jälleen neuvottiin odottamaan. Ennätettiin istahtaa, kun meidät kutsuttiin luukulle yksi. Tässä Kajlta kysyttiin miksi hän on lähdössä Yhdysvaltoihin? Kauanko hän on ollut Teknowaren palveluksessa? Mikä on tuleva työtehtävä? Annelta kysyttiin, kauanko olemme olleet naimisissa? Ja onko mukavaa lähteä? Virkailija tarkasti passit ja niputti ne kuminauhalla muiden papereidemme sekaan ja sanoi, että passit lähetetään viisumien kanssa meille noin viikossa. Hyvässä tapauksessa jo loppuviikosta, mutta tuleva juhannus sotkee vähän, joten viimeistään ensi viikon alusta. Varmistettiin vielä, että saadaanhan me passit ennen keskiviikkoa 29.6., koska olemme varanneet sille päivälle lennolle liput. Virkailija lupaili, että näin olisi, mutta varmaksi ei voi luvata... Vielä turvatarkastuksen läpi ja homma oli valmis. Hieman jäi epävarma tunnelma päällimmäiseksi, mutta toivotaan, toivotaan...

The beginning of June was very hectic. As our interview was postponed to 06/20 Kaj had to visit USA once more for business before our final move. Kaj's trip started on 06/05 with a flight to San Francisco via New York. From there he continued by car to Sacramento. As the flight from New York was delayed by three hours it took Kaj 26 hours to get to Sacramento from Helsinki. The first three days Kaj spent visiting customers and the remaining time he spent at Teknoware Inc making preparations for our move. The week before Kaj's departure we received our leasing contract for signature and we were able to sign it electronically. The contract was 6 pages long with 62 pages of appendixes. These included: appendix for bed bugs, addendum for drugs, marijuana and criminal activity and the instructions for the apartment and conduct. Kaj received the contract back with the owners signature during the trip and he was finally able to finalize the account for the gas distribution. Finally we had everything ready so that we would receive the keys for the apartment. Which he collected on Monday 06/13 the day before he took his return flight to Finland.

On Thursday 06/16 we celebrated Krister birthday/farewell party. We had invited Krister's classmates, friends from hobbies and other friend for a magical birthday celebration. It was important to Krister to be able to see his friends and to have a immemorial moment with all of them. We had organized a magician to the party and we have to say it was an excellent choice. All 20 kids loved the act and enjoyed the offered goodies.

On Saturday we had invited people (close friends, neighbors, important people) to join us for a farewell party. Anne had promised to make some pancakes with ice cream and jams. Of course there is no party if coffee is not available also. Anne started to make the pancakes right after 9:00 am in the rain, but fortunately we have a big terrace with a roof. We also went through our freezer and took out some home made jams and hand picked berries. During the day we notices that we were running out of dough, so quickly to the market to buy more milk and to make more dough. In overall  we consumed 7 liters of milk in our dough's. We had three different kinds of pancakes: gluten free,lactose free and regular pancakes. Almost all pancakes were consumed and over 70 people came to see us. During the day we shed some tears, most of the time was filled with laughter and every one wished us good luck for our move ahead. We have fantastic and wonderful people around us and with the support we have will go through grey stone and back as we say in Finland.

On Sunday Kaj's parents came and picked the kids to the summer house in Aurekoski, so that Kaj and Anne could go to the US Embassy on Monday morning.

Monday morning we started from home at 7:30 am. We drove to Helsinki and left the car in City Forum which is 2,5 km form the embassy. As Finns we obeyed the instruction given to us and left all our personal belongings (phones, keys etc.) in the car and took with us only the required documents. Two complete folders. Before we started walking we checked the location of the embassy from google maps, left the phones in the car and started walking towards the embassy. Along the way there were few road works going on, so we had to divert from our original route and we were not always sure where we were. But finally we found the embassy and we were there 15 minutes before our appointment which was a 10:00 am. We registered in the entrance and gave the guard our passports. We were invited one by one to the security check. Just before the metal detector there was a sign mentioning that all cell phones should be closed and left in the security area. Well our phones were in the car 2,5 km from the embassy, which was nice as it would have been nice to have the phones when navigating to the embassy. All electrical devices had to be left in the security area, so we had to remove our clocks and even the car keys had to remain in this area. The security people escorted us to the main building one by one, where we were received by an other security person whom told us to take a service number. There were no instructions beside the machine so we took the service number from the immigration button. This was the only button mentioning Visas. In the waiting room there were few people before us and some people arrived after us. After 40 minutes of waiting we realized that every body else had been invited to the counters except us and Kaj mentioned this out loud and the security guard told us that we had apparently the wrong queuing number. We took another service number, but still nothing happened. This is when Kaj started to get alarmed and stood up. This is when the security guard decided to call the counters and told them we were still waiting for our turn. Few minutes after the call we were invited to the counter number three. The clerk told us that she had wondered where we had disappeared and apologized that we had to wait over an hour. We gave the requested documents and passports to the clerk from our folder and we were once more instructed to sit down and wait for a while. After 10 minutes we were invited to the counter number 2, where they took our finger prints and again we were instructed to sit down for a while. It did not take long when we were invited to the counter number one where the actual interview was done. Kaj was asked why he was going to the US ? How many years he had worked for Teknoware ? What was his job description ? Anne was asked how many years we had been married and what were her thoughts about moving to the US ? The clerk studied our passport and gathered them together with a rubber band and told us that we would get our passports within one week. With good luck before the end of the week, but as the mid summer celebration would be on Friday the passport would most likely arrive beginning of the following week. We tried to confirm that we would have the passports before 06/29 as we had our flight then. The clerk responded that most likely, but she could not be certain. We visited the security area once more to pick up our clocks and bag and we started to return to our car. We are not that assured that we will get our passports on time, but lets hope for the best.

Muuttolaatikot lähtee jo matkaan / Our moving boxes leave to US

Pakkaus materiaalit ja laatikot saapuivat meille 12.5. Siitä lähtien Anne oli erittäin ahkera ja kävi kaikki lasten vaatteet, liinavaatteet, pyyhkeet sekä astiat läpi ja pakkasi suurimman osan tavaroista jo ennakkoon laatikoihin. Kaiken särkyvän keräsimme keittiön sivupöydälle, josta Niemen porukka tiesi mitkä tavarat lähtee mukaan. Kaikki kalusteet, sohva, sängyt, TV taso sekä taulut sekä pyörät ja lasketteluvälineet jäivät sentään pakkaajille purettavaksi ja pakattavaksi. Niemen porukka saapui meille 2.6. kello 9:00 aamulla ja kaikki tavarat oli tarkastettu ja paketoitu kello 15:00 mennessä. Seuraavana päivänä meidän pihaan saapui merikontti ja samaiset pakkaajat kantoivat kaikki laatikot konttiin alle tunnissa. Niemen porukoille erittäin paljon kiitoksia hienosta työstä, eteenkin pakkaajille. Meillä oli kansainvälinen pakkausporukka. Suomalainen nainen, Austraalialainen mies sekä Uusi Seelantilainen mies. Kaj käytti suurimman osan ajastaan jälleen täyttämällä kaikenlaisia lomakkeita Suomen sekä Yhdysvaltojen tulleja varten. Lisäksi Kaj teki excel taulukon, johon listasimme kaikki mukaan lähtevät tavarat sekä laitoimme jokaiselle arvon vakuutusta varten. Iltaisin töiden jälkeen Kaj oli yhteyksissä Yhdysvaltoihin ja avasi meille asiakastilit sähkö- sekä kaasujakelijalle sekä hankki meidän asuntoon kotivakuutuksen. Nämä olivat vaatimuksena, jotta saisimme avaimet kesäkuun lopussa. Kontti lähti Vuosaaresta 9.6. kohti Rotterdamia, jossa se siirretään toiseen alukseen, joka jatkaa matkaa 17.6. Kontin arvioitu saapumispäivän New Yorkiin on 27.6. Tulliselvitykseen menee 5 - 7 päivää, jonka jälkeen se luovutetaan Niemen yhteistyökumppanille, joka toimittaa kontin meille Orangeen. Toivottavasti meidä tavarat ovat perillä viikolla 28 ja itse olemme siellä ennen tavaroita.

Muutto osui sopivasti samalle viikolle kun koulut loppuvat. Keskiviikkona 1.6. meillä oli Kasmirin kevätjuhla, torstaina heti kun pakkaajat lähtivät aloitimme valmistautumaan Jasminin ja Kristerin kevätjuhlaan, perjantaina lapsilla oli koulun piknikpäivä kartanonpuistossa ja lauantaina lapsilla oli vielä todistusten jako. Olemme aina yrittäneet järjestää lapsille jotain kivaa tekemistä kesäloman alun kunniaksi ja tämäkään vuosi ei ollut poikkeus. Suoraan todistusten jaosta menimme Pajuketun Seikkailupuistoon. Kävimme nopeasti kotona grillaamassa lounasruokaa ja jatkoimme matkaa Lahden torille katsomaan Antti Tuiskun Ylexpop keikkaa, jossa tapasimme Jasminin Memmu kummin. Kaiken kruunaukseksi kävimme vielä Bus Burgerissa syömässä päivällistä.

 The boxes and packaging material were delivered to us on the 05/17 and from that day forward Anne did a huge job going though all of clothing, linen and china and prepacked most of them beforehand. All of the materials that were breakable we collected on to a counter in our kitchen so that the packers of Niemi knew which articles were going with us. All furniture, sofa, beds, TV stand, pictures, bikes and skiing equipment were dismantled and packed by the packers. So Anne left them something to do. The packers arrived to our home on Thursday 06/02 at 9:00 am and they had checked and packed everything by 3:00pm. On the next day the container arrived to our drive way and the packers had everything ready in 50 minutes. A big thank you for Niemi. Excellent work especially the packers. We had an international packing team, a Finnish woman, one guy from Australia and an other one for New Zealand. Kaj used most of his time filling out forms for Finnish and US customs. In addition he made an excel file where we listed all the articles that were packed and we had to estimate a value for each article for the insurance. During the evenings after work Kaj was in contact with the gas company and electric company in the US to organize accounts for us. He also bought us home insurance which was one of the requirements to be able to get the keys for the apartment. The container was shipped from Vuosaari on 06/09 to Rotterdam where it tranships to an ocean vessel on 06/17 and the expected arrival time to New York is 06/27. It will take 5 - 7 days for the container to get out from customs and then it will be delivered to the Niemi agent in US to deliver our materials to Orange. Hopefully we will have all our stuff on week 28 and we are there to receive them.

Our move was on the same week as the schools were ending. Kasmir had his speech day on Wednesday 06/01. On Thursday immediately after the packers left we started to get ready for the speech day of Krister and Jasmin. On Friday the kids had a picnic day near the school and on Saturday our kids went to school to get their report cards.  We try to organize something special for the kids in the beginning of summer holidays and this year was no different. Directly from the school on Saturday we went to the the Adventure park Pajukettu to climb in trees. Quickly home to have some lunch and directly after lunch we went to the Lahti market place to the Ylexpop concert where Antti Tuisku (Finnish pop singer) was performing. We also met with Jasmin's godmother Memmu in the concert. To top it all we went for dinner in Bus Burger which has one of the best burgers in Lahti.

Vastoinkäymisiä viisumin kanssa / Set back with the Visa application

Edellisessä kirjoituksessa kerroimme, että olimme saaneet USCIS:sta tiedon, että meidän viisumihakemus oli hyväksytty ja seuraavaksi pääsisimme järjestämään haastattelua Helsingin Suurlähetystöön. Alkuperäisen käsityksen mukaan meidän piti vielä odottaa Annen ja lasten viisumi hyväksyntää, mutta kun Kaj selvitteli asiaa, vahvistui tieto, ettei erillistä hyväksyntää tarvita. Koska Kaj:lle haetaan L1 viisumia ja Annelle sekä lapsille L2 viisumia, niin koko prosessi menee Kaj:n L1 viisumin mukaan. Eli palataksemme näihin viimeaikaisiin tapahtumiin. Keskiviikkona 27.4. meille tuli tieto, että hakemus oli hyväksytty ja lakitoimistolta tuli tieto perjantaina 29.4., että lähettivät meille hakemuksen kaikki paperit sekä haastattelua varten tarvittavan I-797 hyväksymisilmoituksen. Heti alkuviikosta aloimme täyttää haastattelua varten tarvittavaa DS 160 lomaketta Suurlähetystön nettisivujen kautta. Lomake sisälsi 123 kysymystä, joista suurin osa oli samoja, joihin olimme vastanneet jo aikaisemmissa lomakkeissa. Kaiken huipuksi meidän piti täyttää tuo lomake kuusi kertaa, koska lapsillekin piti hakea oma vahvistus. Eli kokonaisuudessaan vastasimme 738 kysymykseen ja kun otamme huomioon Kaj:n lisäkysymykset armeijaan sekä matkustamiseen liittyen, kysymyksiä oli todellisuudessa yli 750 kpl. Hassuinta oli, että lapsiltakin kysyttiin kaikki turvallisuuskysymykset. Esimerkiksi ovatko he terroristiryhmien jäseniä, ovatko osallistuneet lasten tai ihmisten salakuljetukseen tai aikovatko toteuttaa rahanpesua Yhdysvalloissa.

Viikon loppuun mennessä lakitoimiston lähettämät paperit eivät olleet saapuneet (torstai oli helatorstai ja perjantaina Kaj oli vapaalla), joten haastattelu aikaa pääsimme varaamaan vasta maanantaina 9.5. Ajan varaaminen ei ollutkaan sitten ihan yksinkertaista. Aluksi piti kirjautua suurlähetystön sivuille, jonka jälkeen pääsi jälleen vastaamaan muutamaan kysymykseen. Tämän jälkeen sivuille piti linkittää DS 160 lomakkeiden vahvistuskoodit, josta seuraava vaihe oli haastattelun maksaminen. Maksun pystyi suorittamaan neljällä eri tavalla: pankkikortilla, verkkopankkimausulla, verkkopankkisiirtopalvelulla tai sitten käteisellä pankissa. Koska pankki oli kiinni kun maksua teimme, maksoimme haastattelun verkkopankkimaksulla. Maksun jälkeen jouduimme odottamaan seuraavaan aamuun ennen kuin pääsimme jatkamaan prosessia, koska suurlähetystön piti ensin saada vahvistus maksusta ja sitten lähettää meille kuitti maksusta. Kun saimme kuitin, kirjauduimme jälleen sivuille ja aloitimme ajanvarauksen. Järkytykseksi ensimmäinen vapaa aika oli vasta 20.6. ja koska ohjeen mukaan meidän piti varata kaksi aikaa ensimmäinen päivä jolloin tämä onnistui oli 23.6. Alotimme varaamalla ensimmäisen ajan kyseisenä päivänä ja kun yritimme varata toista aikaa, huomasimme ettei se onnistunut. Ei auttanut muu kuin soittaa meille annettuun asiakaspalvelunumeroon.  

Tämäkin oli sitten mielenkiintoinen tapahtuma. Soitimme numeroon ja siellä oli perinteinen palveluvalikko: Paina yksi jos haluat palvelua englanniksi, paina kaksi jos haluat palvelua suomeksi jne. Muutaman valikon jälkeen etenimme oikealle tasolle, jossa oli tietoa ajanvarauksista. Aluksi äänite kertoi aukioloajoista, jonka jälkeen se luetteli toisen puhelinnumeron, johon piti soittaa, jos halusi apua ajanvarauksen kanssa. Eihän meillä ollut paperia ja kynää, joten nopeasti sellaiset jostain jotta saataisiin numerot talteen kun äänite toistaa numerot. Valitettavasti äänite ei toistanut numeroita vaan kiitti kohteliaasti soitosta ja sulki puhelun. Joten ei muuta kuin soittamaan uudestaan numeroon ja käymään valikot uudestaan läpi ja kirjaamaan numeron ylös. Ei muuta kuin soittamaan seuraavaan numeroon, jossa meitä odotti uusi palveluvalikko. Muutaman tason jälkeen pääsimme valintoihin: paina 1 jos haluat apua ajanvarauksen kanssa, paina 2 jos haluat apua viisumeiden kanssa. Mehän valtisimme ykkösen, jonka jälkeen äänite kertoi meille, että pitää mennä suurlähetystön nettisivuille ja siellä voi tehdä ajanvarauksen. Tässä vaiheessa alkoi jo hieman kiroiluttaa. Ei muuta kuin soittamaan uudestaan numeroon ja valitsemaan seuraavalla keikalla numero kaksi. Aluksi kuulosti siltä, että tässäkin valinnassa oli pelkkä äänite antamassa ohjeita, mutta onneksi äänitteen lopuksi tuli paina 5 jos haluat keskustella asiakaspalvelijan kanssa. Saimme kun saimmekin ihmisen langan päähän sekä vahvistettua, että tarvitsemme vain yhden ajan haastattelua varten. Tämä kun ratkesi, ei muuta kuin nopeasti takaisin lähetystön sivuille ja muuttamaan haastattelun ajankohdaksi 20.6. kello 10:00. Koko tähän säätämiseen meni reilut kaksi päivää kun yritimme tehdä varausta työn, arjen sekä harrastusten ohella. Haastattelun sähköpostivahvistuksen saimme keskiviikkona iltapäivästä ja muuten päivä meni kerätessä haastattelua varten tarvittavia papereita ja ottamalla niistä kopioita.

Haastattelu ajankohdasta johtuen meidän lähtö siirtyy nyt reilulla kahdella viikolla eteenpäin. Tällä hetkellä arvioitu lähtöpäivä on 29.6. Haastattelun jälkeen viisumit pitäisi olla valmiina 48h sisällä ja toivottavasi voimme noutaa ne suoraan lähetystöstä, jotta ei tarvitsisi odottaa vielä niiden toimitusta postiin. Onneksi on ollut myöskin hyviä uutisia. Tiistaina meillä kävi muuttofirman edustaja arvioimassa paketointitarvikkeiden määrän ja konttiin menevät kuutiot. Paketointi materiaalit toimitettiin meille torstaina ja nyt pääsemme aloittamaan irtaimiston paketoinnin. Muuttokontin pitäisi lähteä matkaan viikolla 22.

Viimeiset pari kuukautta ovat olleet henkisesti hieman raskaita johtuen tästä jatkuvasta epätietoisuudesta. Omat osuutemme olemme tehneet niin nopeasti kuin mahdollista ja suurin osa ajasta on mennyt odottaessa tietoa siitä miten prosessi etenee ja koska saamme hyväksynnän. Lopuksi vielä tämä lähdön siirtyminen kahdella viikolla eteenpäin, jolle me emme voi mitään ja lähtökään ei ole vielä varma, koska voi olla mahdollista, että suurlähetystö haluaa jotain lisäselvityksiä. Pidetään sormet ristissä, että kaikki menee hyvin.

On our last update we were telling that we had received that approval from USCIS and we were instructed to contact the Embassy to organize the interview. According to our original understanding we were supposed to wait for the approval of Anne's application and the kids. Fortunately Kaj verified this and this was not the case. As Kaj is a L1 applicant and Anne and the kids are L2, the overall process follows Kaj application. Lets return back to the last few weeks. We received confirmation that our application was approved on 04/27 and the law firm informed us that they had sent us all the necessary documents needed for the interview and the I 797 application notice on 04/29 . Immediately when Kaj returned from his business trip we started to fill out the DS 160 forms required for the interview through the webpages of the embassy. The form had 123 questions of which most were the same that we had answered already on other forms. To top it all we had to fill out 6 forms as we needed confirmations also for the kids. Meaning we had to answer 738 questions and if we take into consideration the additional questions Kaj had to answer concerning the military service and his travels in the last 5 years, in overall we answered more than 750 questions. We think it was funny that we had to answer all the security questions on behalf of our kids, which included questions like are you part of a terrorist organization, are you part of children or human trafficking or do you plan to do money laundering in USA.

The papers sent by the law firm had not arrived by the end of the week ( Thursday was Ascension day and Kaj was out of the office on Friday), so we could start organizing the interview on Monday 05/09. Reserving the interview time was not as simple as we thought. First we had to subscribe to the Embassy pages and to start everything  we had to answer a few questions once more. After this we had to upload the DS 160 confirmation codes which allowed us to open the page where we could pay the interview fee. There were four payment options: Debit card, online banking transfer, electronic transfer and cash payment in a bank. As we were doing the payment outside of office hours we paid through online banking transfer. We had to wait overnight to continue with the process as the embassy needed to receive the payment first and then send us a receipt of the payment via email. As soon as we received it we logged in the embassy pages and started to reserve a date and time for the interview. We were shocked to find out that the next available time was on 06/20 and as we had to reserve two times as we were instructed the next available times were on 06/23. We reserved the first available time and as we started to reserve the next time we found out that it was not possible through the webpage. Therefore we were forced to call the phone number we were provided for assistance.

Calling the number was an interesting experience. As expected it had a service menu: press 1 if you want assistance in English, press 2 if you want assistance in Finnish etc. After going through few menus were able find the one concerning reserving times.  First the voice started by telling us the opening hours of the embassy and then she enumerated a new phone number that should be called for assistance. Of course we did not have paper and a pencil with us so we searched quickly for these so that we could catch the number as soon as the recording would repeat it. Unfortunately the recording was not repeated, so we had to call the number once more and go through the menus again. Fortunately we were able to get the number on the second round and we gave a call to this number and again we were welcomed by a service menu. After browsing through several menus we were able to find the menu which stated: press 1 if you want assistance with reserving a time for an interview, press 2  if you want assistance with visa applications. Of course we pressed one and the only thing we got were the instructions to go to the embassy webpages the make a reservation. At this stage I can say few swearwords were used. Nothing more to do but to call the number again and this time we chose option two.  At first it seemed that we would only listen to a recording, but fortunately the recording ended by: if you still want assistance press 5. Finally we were able to speak with an actual person and to confirm that we only needed one appointment. Quickly back to the embassy webpages to change the date to 06/20 at 10:00 am. In overall it took us more than 2 days to reserve the date and time as we worked with this process at the same time as we took care of our everyday life, work and kids hobbies. The confirmation for the interview we received on Wednesday afternoon and the remaining of the day was spent collecting the necessary documents and taking the necessary copies.

Due to the reason that our interview is on 06/20 our departure date is now postponed by two weeks. At the moment our estimated departure date is on 06/29. It will take 48 h to get the visas into our passports and hopefully we can pick them up from the embassy so that we do not have wait for the delivery to the post office. Fortunately we also have good news. The representative of the moving company visited us on Tuesday to evaluate the needed package materials and the needed cubic meters. On Thursday we received the boxes for the move and now we can start to pack our personal items. Planned departure date for our container is on week 22.

We have to say the last few months have been mentally exhausting due to this continues uncertainty. Our part we have tried to do as efficiently as possible, but most of the time we have spent waiting for information how the process is going and when are we receiving the approval for our visas. And the information that our departure date was postponed does not help the situation. We still have to remember that the departure date is not confirmed at this stage. The embassy might require additional statements which will postpone our departure even more. Lets keep our fingers crossed so that everything goes well.

Kahden viikon työkeikka / Two week business trip

Kevään kolmas työkeikka alkoi jälleen sunnuntaiaamuna heti uinnin jälkeen. Tiedossa oli 9 tunnin lento New Yorkiin. Siellä 4 tunnin vaihto ja jatkolentoyhteys Los Angelesiin, jossa tapasin Teknoware Incin myyjän Walterin. Tarkoituksena oli tutustua Walterin pääasiakkaisiin ja alkuviikko kierrettiin Los Angelesin ja San Fransiscoon alueella. Keskiviikkona lensimme Chicagoon yhtä palaveria varten ja torstai-iltana lensin Rochesteriin, josta ajoin reilu kaksi tuntia Elmiraan, jossa tavattiin Esan kanssa. Perjantaina meillä oli heti aamusta palaveri Hornellissa, jonka jälkeen ajoimme reilut viisi tuntia Esan kanssa Milfordiin viikonloppua viettämään. Ensimmäisen viikon aikana tapasimme kuusi asiakasta ja muuten aika meni lentokoneissa, lentokentillä sekä hotelleissa.

Viikonlopun viettoon pääsin perjantai-iltana 19:00 aikoihin kun kävin noukkimassa lainaan Teknoware Incin pakettiauton ja suoraa kyytiä hotellille lepäämään. Lauantai aamuna olin varannut 10:15 tapaamisen Grand Reservin kanssa mahdollisesta asunnosta ja olin pyytänyt Esan mukaan mahdollisia järjestelyjä varten. Kaksi viikkoa ennen matkaani olin yhteyksissä Avalon Communitiesiin, koska heiltä oli tullut ilmoitus, että heillä olisi asunto vapaana. Yritin tehdä netissä leasing sopimuksen, mutta lomaketta täyttäessä minulle selvisi, että sopimusta varten tarvittaisiin sosiaaliturvatunnus tai sitten viisuminnumero ja minulla ei ollut kumpaakaan. Olin leasing toimistoon yhteyksissä ja yritin selvittää muita keinoja, jolla saisimme sopimuksen tehtyä, mutta valitettavasti tätä keinoa ei löytynyt tai siis mitkään minun ehdottamani keinot eivät kelvanneet. Koska epäilin, että nämä samat ongelmat tulevat esiin myös Grand Reservin kanssa pyysin Esan mukaan. Esa voisi sopia jotain Teknoware Incin nimissä, jos minä en pääsisi sopimukseen yksin. Mitään ongelmia ei sitten tullut. April antoi minulle kolme lomaketta täytettäväksi ja vajaan puolen tunnin päästä minulla oli paperit täytettynä. Ainoa pieni hidaste oli depositin maksu, jolla asunto varattiin meille. Maksuksi ei kelvannut käteinen eikä luotokortti. Ainoat maksu tavat olivat shekki tai sitten jonkinlainen kaupasta hankittava maksutosite. Onneksi Esa oli mukana ja kävimme hakemassa Esan kodista shekkivihon ja sain depositin maksettua. Tämä ei kuitenkaan ollut vielä tässä. Aprilin piti vielä lisätä nuo minun täyttämäni lomakkeet heidän järjestelmään ja minun piti vielä allekirjoittaa yhdet paperit. Aprililtä meni tähän järjestelmän päivittämiseen n. tunti, joten kävin kääntymässä ostoksilla sillä aikaa. Piti ostaa kevyempää vaatetta kun olin lupautunut Mikon ja Esan kanssa golf kierrokselle. Lopulta sain nimet papreihin ja nopeasti hotellille lounaalle ja sit Esa noukki minut kyytiin golfaamaan. Loppujen lopuksi en golfia pelannut, kun satutin vasemman käteni edellisenä iltana noustessani autosta ja en viitsinyt ottaa riskiä käden kanssa. Olihan minulla vielä seitsemän lentoa ja pitkä työviikko edessä.

Seuraava työviikko alkoi jo sunnuntaina kun Esan kanssa ajoimme JFK:n lentokentälle ja otimme lennon Meksiko Cityyn. Maanantaina heti aamusta palaveriin ja takaisin lentokentälle, josta otimme lennon Chicagoon ja heti tiistaiaamusta jatkolentoyhteys Winnipegiin. Menimme suoraan kentältä palaveriin ja palaverista takaisin kentälle ja Winnipegistä lento Toronton kautta Montrealiin. Montrealissa meillä oli palaverit keskiviikkona ja torstaina, joten pääsimme nauttimaan harvinaisesta herkusta kun vietimme samassa hotellissa kaksi yötä. Torstaina palaverin jälkeen otimme lyhyen lennon takaisin JFK:lle, josta Esa jatkoi matkaa Milfordiin ja minä jäin lentokenttähotelliin odotamaan perjantain paluulentoa Suomeen. Toisella viikolla viisi asiakasta ja jälleen kerran muu aika meni lentokoneissa, lentokentällä sekä hotelleissa. Paljon ei jäänyt aikaa turismille.

Matkan aikana viisumiprosessikin meni eteenpäin. Ensimmäisellä viikolla sain sähköpostia USCIS:ltä, että meidän hakemukset olivat saapuneet sinne. Toisen viikon keskiviikkona sain teidon, että minun hakemus oli hyväksytty ja sain ohjeet Helsingin suurlähetyksen haastatteluun. Annen ja lasten hakemukset ovat vielä käsittelyssä.

My third business trip to the United States started once more on Sunday morning directly after swimming. I had a 9 hour flight to New York where I had a 4 hour stop over and then a connecting flight to Los Angeles. Where I met with Walter the salesperson of Teknoware Inc. The idea for the first week was to visit Walters main customers and the beginning of the week we spent in Los Angeles and San Fransisco. On Wednesday we continued our trip to Chicago where we had a meeting on Thursday morning. From Chicago I flew to Rochester where I rented a car and drove the Elmira to meet with Esa. Friday morning we had a meeting in Hornell and directly after the meeting we started our five hour drive to Milford where we would spend our weekend. On my first week I met six customers and the remaining of the time I spent on airplanes, airports and hotels.

My weekend started on Friday at 7:00 pm when I went the Teknoware Inc to pick up the companies van for loan and from there I went directly to the hotel to rest. Saturday morning 10:15 am I had organized a meeting with Grand Reserve for a possible apartment and I had asked Esa to join the meeting if there would be any surprises. Two week before my trip I was in contact with Avalon Communities as I got an alert that they had an apartment available. I tried to fill out the leasing contract in the internet, but I could not finalize the contract as it requested a U.S. Social Security number or a Visa number and I did not have neither of them. I contacted the leasing office to see if there was an other way we could finalize the contract, but unfortunately we were not able to find any other way or in other words non of my suggestions were accepted. Due to the problems with Avalon Communities I feared we would have similar problems at Grand Reserve and this is why I asked Esa to join. If we would face some problems, maybe we could find a solution where Teknoware Inc could help. Surprisingly we had no problems. April gave me three forms to fill out and after 30 minutes I had all of them ready. The only thing that caused us some "problems" was the deposit that was required to reserve the apartment for us. Nor cash or credit cards were accepted as means of payment. The only ways allowed were check or some document that was available from supermarkets. Fortunately I had Esa with me and we went to pick up a check from Esa's home and I was able to pay the deposit. Unfortunately it didn't end here. April still needed to update the forms I filled out to their system and I would still need to sign few documents. It took April roughly an hour to update the system, therefore I used this time to visit the mall to buy some casual clothing as I had agreed to go play some golf with Esa and Mikko. After shopping I returned to Grand Reserve once more to sign the documents, from there quickly to the hotel to have some lunch and almost imediately after lunch Esa came to pick me up for the round of golf. In the end I did not play as the day before I hurt my left arm while exiting the car and I did not want to take the risk to hurting it more as I still had seven flights and my second week still ahead of me.

We started our second working week on Sunday when we departed to JFK to catch the flight to Mexico City. Early Monday morning we had a meeting and directly after the meeting to the airport to catch a flight to Chicago. Where we only had a stopover as we had a connection flight on Tuesday morning to Winnipeg. From the airport we went directly to the customer and from the customer returned to the airport to catch our flight to Toronto where we had a transfer to Montreal. In Montreal we had meetings on Wednesday and Thursday, this gave us a rare opportunity where we were able to stay in the same hotel two nights in a row. After the meeting on Thursday we took a short flight to JFK and from there Esa returned to Milford and I stayed in an Airport Hotel to wait for my return flight to Finland on Friday. On my second week we had five meetings and once more the rest of the time I spent in airplanes, airports and hotels. Not much time for sightseeing. 

During my trip our Visa process advanced a little bit. On my first week I received an email from USCIS that our applications had been received. On the Wednesday of the second week I received information that my application had been approved and I received the instructions how to organize the interview in the Embassy in Helsinki. The applications of Anne and the kids are still under evaluation.
