Viisumin haku prosessi aloitettu / The application for Visa has started

Passien haku prosessi tuli päätökseen 9.2. kun Annen ja lapsien passit saapuivat Nastolan R-kioskille. Tämä oli erittäin iloinen uutinen, koska minulla oli jo varattuna puhelinpalaveri Yhdysvaltalaisen yrityksen kanssa, joka avustaa meitä viisumin haussa. Tottakai minä olin työmatkalla Sveitsissä kun passit saapuivat, joten Anne kävi hakemassa ne Jaden kanssa, kun muut lapset olivat koulussa. Kokonaisuudessaan passien hakeminen oli hämmästyttävän helppo tapahtuma, jopa meidän poppoolle.

Torstaina minä olin hieman pitempään toimistolla, koska sovittu puhelinpalaveri alkoi 17:30. Palaverissa kävimme Ceridwen Kosken kanssa läpi viisumin haun eri vaiheet. Itse prosessi koostuu neljästä eri vaiheesta. Heti aluksi täytämme netissä hakukaavakkeet ja toimitamme vaadittavat dokumentit, tämän jälkeen Ceridwen tai heidän yrityksensä koostaa niistä lopullisen hakemuksen ja toimittaa sen viranomaisille. Viranomaishyväksyntään menee useita viikkoja, mutta heti hyväksynnän jälkeen varaamme ajan Helsingin suurlähetystöön suurlähettilään haastatteluun. Passit jätämme samalla keikalla sinne, jotta voivat lisätä viisumit meidän passeihin. Tällä hetkellä lähtöön on 16 viikkoa, joten aikaa meillä on vielä riittävästi.

Our passport application process came to an end on Tuesday 9.2. when the passports of the kids and Anne arrived to Nastola's R-kioski. This was very good news as I had arranged a conference call with a company in Denver which will help us with the Visa application process. Of course I was on a business trip in Switzerland on Tuesday, so Anne went to pick-up the passports with Jade, when the rest of the kids were at school. In overall we have to say the application process of the passports went extremely smoothly, even for a big size family like ours.

On Thursday I had to stay late in the office as I had the conference call at 5:30pm with the law firm. In the meeting we discussed the overall process of the Visa application with Mrs. Ceridwen Koski. The process consists of four main phases. In the first phase I have to fill out a questionnaire and provide several accompanying documents to the law firm. Mrs. Koski or her colleagues will finalize the application and deliver it to the correct authorities. Our application will be reviewed for several weeks, but after the first approval we will have to organize an interview in the US Embassy in Helsinki. During this visit we will leave our passport to the embassy, so that they can attach the Visas. We have now 16 weeks to the planed departure date, therefore we should have enough time to finalize the process.

Passien anomisen kolmas vaihe / Third phase of our passport applications

Maanantaina 1.2. oli ajat (5x15min) varattu poliisilaitokselle passien anomista varten. Ajat oli yritetty varata niin, että ne mahdollisimman vähän häiritsisivät koulupäivää. Valitettavasti valinnanvaraa ei paljon ollut. Ensimmäinen aika oli 12.15. Jo edellisellä viikolla oli pitänyt muistaa ilmoittaa opettajille lasten poissaolo. Aamulla vannotin lapsia,  että tulevat reippaasti klo 12 parkkipaikalle ja kehotin muistuttamaan opettajaa poissaolosta ja pyytämään häneltä tarvittaessa apua lähdön suhteen. Olin Jaden kanssa parkkipaikalla valmiina klo 11.55, Kasmir saapui melkein heti ja Kristerkin pian perässä. Jasminia saatiinkin odottaa ja kärsivällisyys oli koetuksella. Neiti saapui klo 12.08. Minulla oli siis 7 minuuttia aikaa ehtiä Erstan koululta Lahden poliisilaitokselle (13km)... En ehtinyt. Perillä oltiin klo 12.18 ja osan matkasta ajoin traktorin perässä... Juoksujalkaa sisälle, vain huomataksemme ettei meitä vielä edes kaivattu... Ei muuta kuin odottelemaan, koska meitä kutsutaan asiaamme hoitamaan. Luukulle kutsu kävi klo 12.40 ja virkailija hieman hämmästyi, kun meitä änkesi siihen kuusi. Mitäs sitä hämmästelemään, töihin vaan. Krister ja Jasmin saivat allekirjoittaa passinsa itse ja muutenkin paperien pyörittely ja allekirjoittelu sujui moitteetta. Lapset kuluttivat aikaansa piirtelemällä. Kaikkien passianomukset saatiin tehtyä. Ja ulkona oltiin jo klo 13.10, vaikka viimeinen meille varattu aika oli vasta klo 13.15. Eli meidän passiasioiden hoitamiseen kului 30 minuuttia varatun 75 minuutin sijaan. Toivottavasti virkailija käytti ylimääräisen ajan hyödyllisesti... Jonojen lyhentämiseen. Passien odotettu saapumisaika on noin kaksi viikkoa... Passit haetaan R-kioskilta, millainenkohan hämminki siitä syntyy...

On Monday 1.2. we had reserved 5x15min in Lahti police station to finalize our passport applications. We had tried to reserve the times so that they would impact as little as possible our children's school day. Unfortunately we didn't have much choice as the first time was 12:15pm. A week before I had to remember to inform the teachers that our children would leave early from school. In the morning I reminded our kids several times to be ready in the parking lot at 12:00pm and if necessary to remind the teachers about their absence and help with getting ready. We arrived to the parking lot with Jade around 11:55am. Kasmir arrived almost immediately and Krister right after him. On the other hand for Jasmin we had to wait several minutes and mom's nerves were tested. Our princess arrived at 12:08pm and I had 7 minutes to drive from Ersta school to the police station 13km. I almost made it. I arrived to the station at 12:18 and part of the trip I drove behind a tractor. We ran inside just to realize that all counters were occupied, so we sat down to wait as we would be called by name. We were called at 12:40pm and the person in the counter was surprised when all six of us arrived. After a short shock she started to calm down and was able to continue with her works. Krister and Jasmin were allowed to sign their own passports and overall the whole process went smoothly. Our children used the time for drawing and after I got my application ready we were out of the station at 13:10pm even though our last reserved time was at 13:15pm. So in overall it took us 30 minutes in total instead of the 75 minutes reserved. I hope the officer used the additional time wisely.... to shorten the queue. We should receive our passports in 2 weeks time when they are delivered to R-kioski. Let's see what happens then...

Toinen työviikko Yhdysvalloissa / Second week in the USA

Toinen työviikko alkoi sitten jo lauantaina. "Lumimyrskyn" takia päätimme siirtyä lähemmäksi lentokenttää, koska meillä oli sunnuntaina aamu kuuden lento Hartfordista Winnipegiin. Lumen tulo olikin aiheuttanut moottoritielle pienen kaaoksen. Matkan aikana kentälle kohtasimme 7 auto-onnettomuutta. Sunnuntaina menimme kentälle tuntia ennen lennon lähtöä ja saimme tietää, että lentomme oli n. 3 tuntia myöhässä. Eli ei muuta kuin selvittelemään miten pääsisimme jatkamaan matkaa Mineapoliksen välilaskun jälkeen Winnipegiin. Onneksi Deltalta löytyi myöhäisempi lento, mutta Mineapoliksessa jouduimme odottamaan 5 tuntia koneen lähtöä, joten alkuperäinen suunnitelmamme olla perillä ennen Patriotsien ja Broncosien peliä meni mönkään. Minneapoliksessa näimme avauspotkun ja Winnipegissä pelin viimeiset minuutit.

Alku kommelluksien jälkeen loppumatka menikin ilman suurempia ongelmia. Aamupäivät olimme asiakkaissa ja muun ajan vietimme lentokoneessa tai hotellissa. Viikon aikana kävimme Winnipegissä, Sacramentossa, Houstonissa sekä Chicagossa. Perjantai aamupäivän istuin vielä toimistolla ja lähdin Milfordista kohti JFK:n lentokenttää hieman yhden jälkeen, jotta kerkeisin Finnairin 17:45 Helsinkiin. Kotona olin lauantai aamuna heti 9:00 jälkeen, jossa minua odotti kaksi hyvin iloista pasta. Jasmin ja Krister olivat isovanhempien luona. Kaksi hyvin pitkää viikkoa oli nyt vihdoin ohi.

My second work week started already on Saturday. Due to the "snow storm" we decided to move closer to the airport to avoid any problems with traffic as we had an early 6 am flight on Sunday. The snow had caused few problems along the way as we encountered seven accidents along the way. Sunday morning we went to the airport roughly an hour before our flight to find out our flight was delayed almost 3 hours. Which meant we had to start investigating how we could proceed from our stopover in Minneapolis to Winnipeg. Fortunately we found a later flight, but it meant we had to wait 5 hours for our connecting flight. Also our original plan to arrive to Winnipeg before the Patriots and Broncos game did not go through as we saw the first few minutes of the game in Minneapolis and last minutes in Winnipeg.

Even though we had some starting problems the rest of the trip went without any major complications. Every morning we visited customers and the remaining of the day we spent on flights or in hotels. During the week we visited Winnipeg, Sacramento, Houston and Chicago. On Friday I went to the office for the morning before I had to leave to the airport to catch the 5:45 pm Finnair flight to Helsinki. I arrived home on Saturday morning around 9:00am where two extremely happy kids were waiting for me. Jasmin and Krister were at their grandparents. Two long weeks were now to an end.
