Yellowstone National park

Tänään vietimme koko päivän Yellowstonen kansallispuistossa. Suuntasimme heti aamusta takaisin Old Faithfulin luontokeskukselle hakemaan yksityiskohtaisemmat kartat ja kysymään neuvoja puistonvartioilta. Keskukselta lähti reilun 4km Upper Geysir Basin trail, jonka päätimme kiertää. Reitin varrella oli useita pienempiä geysireitä, kauniita termisiä lammikoita sekä tietysti Old Faithful, jonka näimme purkautuvan. Reitillä näimme myös Riverside geysirin purkauksen. Reitti palasi keskukselle, jossa kävimme tutustumassa Old Faithful Inniin ja olihan sopiva aika päivän jätski annoksille.

Seuraava kohde oli Prismatic spring. Auton parkkeerasimme Fairy Fallsille, josta oli reilun kilometrin kävely näköalatasanteelle. Tasanteelta avautui todella kaunis maisema lähteestä ja lähteestä nousevasta höyrystä näki todella hyvin kaikki sateenkaaren värit. Parkkipaikalle palattuamme aloimme etsimään sopivaa paikkaa, missä voisi valmistaa lounasta. Päätimme ajaa Firehole Canyon reitille  ja etsiä Firehole joen varresta mukava paikka.

Lounaan jälkeen otimme suunnan puiston itäreunalla sijaitsevalle Canyon Villagelle ja sen luontokeskusta. Keskukseen kun pääsimme teimme reitti suunnitelman ja päätimme aloittaa alueen tutkimuksen Hayden passista sekä siellä sijaitsevasta Mud Volcanosta. Kuten nimikin kertoi alueella oli useita muta- sekä happolähteitä. Mukavan yllätyksen toi biisonit, jotka lepäilivät lähteiden reunalla. Kun olimme kiertäneet lähteet oli edessä päivän viimeinen Yellowstone canyon. Kanioni oli massiivinen ja keskellä virtasi  kaunis joki vesiputouksineen. Kävelimme lyhyen Northern Rim trailin eri näköalapaikoille, mutta lopulta meidänkin oli aloitettava paluu kohti majapaikkaa.

Today we spent the whole day at Yellowstone National park. We started the day by returning to the Old Faithful visitor center to get more detailed maps and to ask recommendations from the park rangers. The 2.5 mile Geysir loop started from the center, so we decided visit it for starters. Along the path were several smaller geysers, thermal springs and of course Old Faithful which we saw erupt. We also saw the Riverside geyser erupt. The loop returned to the visitor center where we visited the Old Faithful Inn and it was also a perfect moment for ice cream.

Our next target was the Prismatic spring. We parked our car to the Falls parking area from which we walked a mile to an outlook of the spring. The view of the spring was breathtaking and from the fumes coming from the spring you could see all the colors of the rainbow. Ojce we returned to the parking lot it was time to look for a good place to prepare lunch. We decided to go to the Firestone loop and search for a nice location beside Moode river.

After lunch we took course to Canyon village visitor center which was on the eastern side of the park. At the center we planned our route and decided to start from Hayden pass and from Mud Volcano which was in the pass. As the name said the area had several mud springs and springs with very acid water. A very nice surprise were the bisons relaxing beside the springs. After we had gone around the springs it was time for our days last location the Yellowstone canyon. The canyon was massive and a river with several waterfalls ran through it. We walked the Northern rom trail to several outlooks, but finally it was time for us the end the day and return to our campsite.

Grand Teton national park

Ensimmäisen kerran 12 päivän aikana lämpötila laski alle 20 asteeseen. Yö tiipiissä oli viileä, mutta saimme silti hyvin nukuttua. Päivän kohde tänään Grand Tetonin kansallispuisto. Ajoaika Duboisista puistoon oli reilun tunnin. Ajoimme ensimmäiseksi Craig Thomasin luontokeksukseen hakemaan kartta sekä selvittämään meille sopivia reittejä. Puistonvartija suositteli meille kolmea eri vaihtoehtoa, joista valitsimme Jenny Laken kierroksen. Vaelluksen aloitimme Jenny Laken luontokeskuksesta, joka sijaitsi järven itäreunalla. Lähdimme kiertämään järveä sen eteläkärjen kautta ja reilun tunnin kävelyn jälkeen saavuimme järven länsireunalla olevaan Inspiration pointiin. Tässä päätimme jatkaa Cascade Canyonin reitille, jota vaelsimme lähes kanjonin reunalle asti. Söimme retkieväät kauniin kosken vieressä, jonka jälkeen suuntasimme takaisin järven itäreunalla sijaitsevalle venelaiturille, josta otimme venekyydin takaisin luotokeskukseen. Kastauduimme pikaisesti raikkaassa järvessä, jonka jälkeen otimme suunnan kohti leirintäaluetta, joka sijaitsi Yellowstonen luoteiskulmassa Montanan puolella. Ajoreitti kulki Yellowstonen kansallispuiston läpi, joten pysähdyimme Old Faithfulin luontokeskuksessa. Meillä kävi todella hyvä tuuri, saavuimme keskukselle seitsemän minuuttia ennen Old Faithfull geysirin purkausta. Purkaus oli mahtava ja kesti yli kolme minuuttia. Pikaisesti otettiin keskuksesta kartta mukaan ja jatkettiin matkaa kohti leiripaikkaa. Perillä teltat pystyyn ja iltapalaksi kävimme pizzalla. Päivän saldo: 314,8 km ajoa ja reilu 8km vaellusta.

For the first time in 12 days the temperature went under 70 degrees. The night in the teepee was coldish, but we were able to get a good night sleep. Today we were planning to visit the national park of Grand Teton. The drive from Dubois to the park was little over an hour and we first drove to the Craig Thomas visitor center to get a map and to find out suitable routes for us. The park ranger recommended to us three different routes from which we decided to go to the Jenny lake route. We started our hike from Jenny Lake visitor center which was on the eastern side of the lake. We walked along the southern side of the lake until we arrived to Inspiration point on the western shore. Here we decided to continue to the Cascade Canyon route which we hiked almost  to the edge of the canyon. We ate some food beside a beautiful river rapid and turned back to return to the boat dock on the western shore. We took a boat ride back to the visitors center. We took a quick dip in the refreshing lake before we took off to the campsite which was on the north wetern corner of Yellowstone national park in Montana. As our driving route went through Yellowstone park we decided to stop at the Old Faithful visitor center. We were extremely lucky as we arrived to the  changeenter only seven minutes before the Old Faithfuls eruption. The geyser's eruption was massive and took over three minutes. After a quick visit to the center and once we had a map we continued our journey to our campsite. Once we arrived we put our tents up and had pizza for dinner. Achievement of the day: 196.8 miles driving and 5 miles hiking. 

Siirtymätaival / Transfer of location

Tämä päivän tarkoitus oli siirtyä Custerista lähemmäksi Yellowstonea. Alkuperäinen suunnitelma oli siirtyä Yellowstonen kanssallispuiston länsipuolelle ja ajaa yli yhdeksän tuntia, mutta huonojen nettiyhteyksien takia emme saaneet illalla varattua telttapaikkoja. Aamuyöstä saimme varaukset tehtyä, mutta suunnitelmiin tuli muutos ja siirtymä kohde vaihtui puiston etelä puolella olevaan Duboisin kylään. Ajoaikakin lyheni kuuteen tuntiin. Päivän reitti: Custer - Edgemont - Lusk - Douglas - Casper - Shoshoni - Riverton - Dubois (Tiet: 385 - 89S - US85 - US18 - I25 - US26). Ajo meni mukavasti ja maisemakin alkoi muuttumaan vuoristoisemmaksi kun lähenimme Rocky Mountainsin vuoristoketjua. Leirintäalueella meillä ei tällä kertaa ollutkaan telttapaikkaa vaan meillä olikin tiipiimajoitus. Iltaa vietettiin nuotion ääressä ja kuunneltiin kun kantribändi soitti tiipiin viereisessä rakennuksessa. Päivän saldo: 662,1 km.

Our task of the day was to move closer to Yellowstone from Custer. Original plan was to move to the western side of the park and drive over nine hours. Due to bad internet connections we were not able to reserve a tentsite the day before, but fortunately on the early hours of the morning we were able to do reservations. Only thing was our plans had changed and now are target was the town of Dubois south of Yellowstone. Our drive time also changed to six hours. Our route was: Custer - Edgemont - Lusk - Douglas - Casper - Shoshoni - Riverton - Dubois (Roads: 385 - 89S - US85 - US18 - I25 - US26). The drive went well and the scenery started to change as we approached the Rocky mountains. At the campsite we did not have a tentsite this time, but accommodation in a teepee. We spent our evening beside our camp fire listening to the country band which was playing in the cabin next to us. Achievement of the day: 413.8 miles.

Crazy Horse / Mt Rushmore / Wind cave NP

Tänään pääsimme taas tutustumaan Yhdysvaltojen luontoon ja nähtävyyksiin. Aamun ensimmäinen kohde oli Crazy Horse Memorial. Monumentin kaiverrus ja rakentaminen aloitettiin vuonna 1948 ja on edelleen kesken. Työn aloitti Korczak Ziolkowski paikallisten intiaaniheimojen pyynnöstä ja työtä on jatkanut hänen lapsensa ja rakentamista varten on perustettu säätiö. Kun poistuimme monumentilta mietimme oliko tämä nyt hyvä asia kaivertaa jättiläismäistä intiaania kauniiseen luontoon. Toisaalta monumentti tuo paikallisille töitä, alueelle on perustettu museo sekä alkuperäiskansojen oma yliopisto projektin ansiosta.

Päivän seuraava kohde Mt Rushmore. Ennakkoon meitä hieman arvelutti tämä neljän presidentin (Washington, Jefferson,  Roosevelt sekä Lincoln) muotokuva kaiverrus, mutta loppujen lopuksi monumentti oli todella vaikuttava. Monumentilta lähdimme kiertämään Custer State Parkin Wildlife loopia. Matkan varrella näimme biisoneita, peuroja sekä preeriakoiria.

Päivän kolmas kohde Wind Cave National park. Puisto on jakaantunut kahteen osaan: maanpinnalla olevaan alueeseen ja maan alla kulkevaan luolastoon. Meidän tavoitteena oli tutustua luolastoon. Varasimme itsellemme liput 1,5 tuntia kestävälle Fairgrounds tourille, jossa pääsimme tutustumaan mahtaviin kivimuodostelmiin sekä luolasaleihin. Kierroksen kruunasi kun kierroksella mukana oleva Lakota heimon jäsen pyysi luvan laulaa heimonsa laulun viimeisessä salissa. Maanpinnalle kun pääsimme menimme jututtamaan heimolaisia ja kun kerroimme, että olimme road tripillä, hän halusi laulaa meille vielä suojeluslaulun matkallemme.

Päivä oli pitkä. Kävimme päivän päätteksi syömässä runsaasti ja tietenkin jäätelöillä.

Today we got to continue exploring the nature of the United States and to see new attractions. Our first site of the day Crazy Horse memorial. The carving of this monument was started in 1948 and is still going on. The work was started by Korczak Ziolkowski when local Native Americans asked him to build a monument for them. The work is being continued by his children and by a non-profit foundation. When we left the monument we were not sure if it was a good thing to carve a huge sculpture in the middle of beautiful nature. On the other hand the monument brings work to the locals and because of it there is a Native American museum and a Native American college in the area.

The second site of the day Mt Rushmore. Before we arrived there we were not sure what to think about a sculpture of four presidents (Washington, Jefferson,  Roosevelt sekä Lincoln), but we have to say it was impressive. From the monument we continued to Custer State Parkin Wildlife loop where we saw bisons, deer and prairie dogs.

Our third attraction of the day was Wind Cave National park. The park is devided into two parts: the park above the surface and the caves under the surface. Our target was the caves. We reserved tickets to a 1,5 hour Fairgrounds tour, where we got to see fantastic boxwork sculptures and cave halls. At the end of the tour a member of the Lakota tribe asked permission from the park ranger if he could sing their tribes song in the last hall. It was amazing. Once we got back to the surface we went to talk with the tribe members and once they found out we were on a road trip, the man who sang in the cave wanted to sing us a blessing for our journey.

The day was long which we ended with a big dinner and of course ice cream.

Kauas on pitkä matka / Far is a long distance

Päivä valkeni jälleen kirkkaana ja lämpimänä. Itse heräilimme mukavasti hotellihuoneen mukavuudesta. Päivän tavoitteena MT Rushmore, josta olimme edellisenä iltana varanneet telttapaikan leirintäalueelta. Aamupalan jälkeen suoraan tien päälle ja heti alkumatkasta nuottivirhe ja ajoimme liittymästä ohi. Nopean tarkastuksen jälkeen huomasimme, ettei virhe pahemmin pidennä matkaa, joten uudet nuotit ja kartan tarkastus ja jatkoimme eteenpäin uudella reitillä: Garden city - Syracuse - Benkelman NE - Wray CO - Julesburg - Oshkosh NE - Bridgeport - Hot Springs SD - Custer (Tiet: US50 - KS27 - US34 - US385 - CO11 - US26 - US385 - US16). Matkan aikana pidimme lyhyen lounas tauon Subwayssa ja muuten matkan aikana kulutimme aikaamme pelaamalla lasten matikkakortteja, mittaamalla suorien, kastelulaitteiden ja junien pituuksia. Perillä leirintäalueella olimme hieman viiden jälkeen, kiitos aikavyöhykkeen ylityksen. Perillä teltat pystyyn ja seuraavaksi ruokakauppaan. Iltaa vietettiin nuotion äärellä maissia ja makkaroita paistaessa. Päivän saldo: 881 km ja 9 tuntia autossa. 

The day woke up bright and warm and we woke up from the comfortable hotel room. The days target MT Rushmore, where we had reserved a tent site the day before. After breakfast straight on the road and of course a mistake with our coordinates and we missed our junction. After a quick check up we noticed that the mistake would not increase our travel time significantly, so we did a new plan and checked our coordinates from the map and continued with our route: Garden city - Syracuse - Benkelman NE - Wray CO - Julesburg - Oshkosh NE - Bridgeport - Hot Springs SD - Custer (Roads: US50 - KS27 - US34 - US385 - CO11 - US26 - US385 - US16). During the trip we only had a short lunch break at Subways and during the drive we spent time playing mathematics cards, measuring the lengths of the staights on the road, watering systems and trains. We arrived to the campsite after 5:00pm thanks to the time zone change. Once on the tent site we put our tents up and immediately to the grocery store to buy food. We spent the evening beside the campfire grilling sausages and corn. Achievement of the day: 550.6 miles and 9 hours in the car.
