The Big Texan / Cadillac Ranch

Tänään tarkoituksena oli taas viettää päivä autossa. Aluksi suuntana Route 66 ja Cadillac Ranch, josta matka jatkuisi kohti MT Rushmorea. Ensimmäisen etapin reitti: Weatherford - Jacksboro - Wichita Falls - Amarillo (Tiet: FM 920 - TX 199 - US 281 - US 287  - I40). Ajoaika oli 5 tuntia. Matkalla näimme useita The Big Texan ravintolan mainoksia ja tunnistimme ravintolan samaksi, jonka olimme nähneet Travel channelin ohjelmassa Riding Route 66. Eli lounaspaikka oli tiedossa. Ravintolassa suunnittelimme päivän toista etappia ja päätimme, että päivän pääte piste olisi Garden City, josta varasimme hotellihuoneen. Lounaan jälkeen pikainen vierailu Cadillac Ranchilla maalaamassa omat tagimme ja sitten nokka kohti pohjoista. Toinen etappi: Amarillo - Fritch - Perryton - Liberal - Garden City (Tiet: Route 66 - TX 355 - FM 1912 - TX 136 - RM 687 - TX 152 - TX 207 - TX 15 - US 83). Ajoaika 4 tuntia. Hotellissa käytiin heti aluksi uimassa ja sitten katseltiin telkusta Formuloita / piirrettyjä. Päivän saldo: 918,7 km.

Todays plan was to spend the day in the car. First target of the day was Route 66 and Cadillac Ranch and from there towards Mt Rushmore. The route of the first stage: Weatherford - Jacksboro - Wichita Falls - Amarillo (Roads: FM 920 - TX 199 - US 281 - US 287  - I40). Drive time 5 hours. Along the way we saw multiple The Big Texan signs and we recognized the restaurant to be the same as the one we've seen on Travel channels Riding Route 66. We now had a location for lunch. In the restaurant we planned our second stage of the day and decided we would end our day at Garden city, where we reserved a hotel room. After lunch we drove to Cadillac Ranch and made our own tags on the cars and started to navigate north.  Second stage: Amarillo - Fritch - Perryton - Liberal - Garden City (Roads: Route 66 - TX 355 - FM 1912 - TX 136 - RM 687 - TX 152 - TX 207 - TX 15 - US 83). Drive time 4 hours. The first thing we did at the hotel was to go for a swim and after that we watched some Formula 1 / cartoons from TV. Achievement of the day: 574.2 miles.

Fort Worth Historic Stockyards / Southfork Ranch

Päivän alkuperäinen suunnitelma oli mennä Rodeoon, mutta meille selvisi, että se alkaisi vasta ilta kahdeksalta. Joten päätimme muuttaa suunitelmaa ja lyhyen nettietsinnän jälkeen löysimme Fort Worth Stockyardin karja-ajon. Eli suunta kohti Fort Worthin historiallista karjapihaa. Päivän aikana karjaa ajettiin kello 11:30 sekä 16:00 ja me olimme karjapihalla hieman ennen kello kymmentä, joten meillä oli hyvin aikaa kierrellä tutkimassa paikkoja. Kävimme katsomassa hevosia, härkiä, Rodeo museota sekä rodeo areenaa. Karja-ajo kulki Exchange streetin läpi ja kesti alle puolituntia. Heti ajon jälkeen Stockyard Stationin sisällä oli Villin Lännen esitys, jossa Sheriffi apurinsa kanssa kävi revolveritaistelun pankkirosvojen kanssa. Taistelu esityksen jälkeen kävimme syömässä BBQ lihaa Risckysin ravintolassa. Koska olimme Dallasin lähellä päätimme vielä käydä South Forkissa katsomassa Ewingejä. Ilta meni jälleen altaalla, vaatteita pestessä ja UNOa pelatessa.

Our original plan for the day was to go to a rodeo, but we found out that it would start at 8:00pm. So we decided to change our plan. After a quick study to the internet we found out the caddle runs at Fort Worths Stockyards, so we took off to Historic district of Fort Worth. During the day they had two caddle runs. One at 11:30am and another at 4:00pm. We arrived there just before 10:00am, so we had more than enough time to look around the stockyards. We saw horses, Texas Longhorns, the Roseo Museum andthe Rodeo Arena. The caddle run took place on Exchange street and was over after 30 minutes. After the run there was a Wild West performance inside the Stockyard Station, where a Sheriff and his debuty had a gunfight with two bank robbers. After the show we had some BBQ meet at Riscky's and as we were close to Dallas we went to serif the Ewings were at South Fork. The remaining of the day we spent swimming, washing clothes and playing few rounds of UNO.

Toinen päivä autossa / Second day in the car

Hyvin nukutun yön ja tuhdin hotelliaamiaisen jälkeen pääsimme liikenteeseen jo aamu kahdeksan jälkeen. Tänään suunnistus oli helppoa kun piti ajaa tietä I20 aina liittymään 408 asti ja sen jälkeen meillä oli ajo-ohjeet leirintäalueelle. Reitti Jacksonville - Monroe - Shreveport - Dallas - Fort Worth - Weatherford. Perillä teltat nopeasti pystyyn ennen ukkosmyrskyä. Tämä osoittautui hankalaksi kun maa oli kovaa savea ja teltankiilat eivät halunneet millään mennä maahan. Saatiin teltat kuitenkin pystyyn ja lähdettiin myrskyn ajaksi ruokaostoksille. Ostoksien jälkeen takaisin leiriin syömään jäätelöä, uimaan, pelaamaan UNOa ja nukkumaan. Päivän saldo: 752,2 km ja n. 7 tuntia.

Texas is not a good design for a sink

After a good night sleep and a big hotel breakfast we were able to continue our journey already at 8:00am. Today navigating was easy as we only had to follow I20 all the way to exit 408 and after that we had written instructions to the campsite. Our route of the day Jackson - Monroe - Shreveport - Dallas - Fort Worth -  Weatherford. Once at the campsite we had to get our tents up quickly before the thunderstorm, which was difficult as the ground was very hard and our tent sticks didn't want to go in. We did get our tents up and we went to buy food while the thunderstorm was on top of us. After shopping back  to camp to eat ice cream, some swimming, few rounds of UNO and to bed. Achievement of the day: 470.1 miles and roughly 7 hours.

Peput puutuu / Our butts get numn

Ilotulitusrikkaan yön jälkeen meidän road trip vihdoin alkoi. Pääsimme starttaamaan 10:00 aamulla ja reittimme kulki: Mims - Jacksonville - Tallahassee - Pensacola FL - Mobile AL  - Hattiesburg MS - Jackson. (Tiet I95 - 295 - 10 - 98 - 49 - 20). Koska olimme autossa yli 12 tuntia ja edessä oli vielä 7 tuntia päätimme yöpyä hotellissa, jonka varasimme matkan päältä. Hotelliin saavuimme hieman yli 21:00 (matkalla aikavyöhykkeen ylitys) ja lapset vielä uimaan ennen sänkyyn menoa. Päivän saldo: 1 134 km.

After a night full of fireworks our road trip finally started. We were able to start at 10:00 am and our route was: Mims - Jacksonville - Tallahassee - Pensacola FL - Mobile AL - Hattiesburg MS - Jackson ( Roads: I95 - 295 - 10 - 98 - 49 - 20). As we were in the car for over 12 hours and we still have 7 hours to go, we decided to sleep in a hotel, which we reserved along the way. We arrived to the hotel at 9:00pm (Time zone changed during the drive) and our kids went for a quick swim before going to bed. Achievement of the day: 709 miles.

Epcot Centre

Tuskaisan kuuman yön jälkeen herättiin taas jälleen kirkaaseen aamuun. Aamupalan jälkeen otettiin suunta kohti Orlandoa ja tällä kertaa kohti Epcot centeriä. Ajoaikaa alta tunnin. Epcot Centre oli täynnä ihmisiä koska oli heinäkuun neljäs ja itsenäisyyspäivä. Vierailimme päivän aikana mm. Ranskassa, Marokossa, Isossa Britanniassa, Japanissa, Kiinassa, Norjassa sekä Meksikossa. Tavattiin taas useita Disney hahmoja. Käytiin avaruudessa sekä aikamatkalla. Lähdimme hyvissä ajoin pois, koska edessä oli taas tunnin ajo leirintäalueelle ja oli mukava päästä teltoille kerrankin valoisaan aikaan. Lapset kävivät pikaisesti uimassa ja pian oli taas aika käydä yöpuulle. Päivän saldo: 84,8 km.

After a very hot night the day started with clear skies. After breakfast we started our way to Orlando and this time Epcot Centre. Less than a  one hour drive. Epcot was full of people as it was July 4th and independence day. During the day we visited France, Morocco, UK, Japan, China, Norway and Mexico just to mention a few. We met several Disney characters. Went on a journey to space and trough time. This time we left the centre early as we had a one hour drive back to the campsite and it was nice to get to the tents before dark. The kids went for a short swim and again it was time to say good night. Achievement of the day: 135.6 miles.

Kennedy Space center

Aamu kun valkeni purimme leirin Disney Fort Wilderness resortissa ja suuntasimme kohti REI Coopin retkeilykauppaa tekemään varuste hankintoja. Kaupan vieressä oli Another Broken Egg kahvila jossa kävimme samalla brunssilla. Ostoksien jälkeen suunta kohti Kennedy Space centeriä katseleman avaruusaluksia ja sukkuloita. Keskuksessa vietimme kuusi tuntia, jonka jälkeen siirryimme Titusvillen KOA leirintäalueelle. Osa porukasta jäi pystyttämään leiriä ja osa kävi ruokakaupassa. Iltapalan jälkeen yöpuulle. Päivän saldo: 75,7 km.

Once the day broke we put our camp down at Disney Fort Wilderness resort and made our way to REI Coop to buy some supplies. Beside the store was a cafe called Another  Broken egg where we went for brunch. Once we had bought our supplies we took course to Kennedy Space center to see Space rockets and shuttles. After spending 6 hours in the center we moved to Titusville KOA campsite where half of us started to make camp and half went to buy some food. After having a late dinner we got ready for bed. Achievement of the day: 121.1 miles.
