Maanantai aamuna teltat laitettiin kasaan ja ennen matkan aloitusta kohti Death Valleytä kävimme leirintäalueen vieressä olevilla kallioilla ihailemassa alueen kauneutta vielä kerran. Kallion huipulla meitä odotti peuranvasa, joka ihmetteli meitä yhtä paljon kuin me sitä. Yosemitessä näimme yllättävän paljon eläimiä. Gaylor Lake reitin varrella näimme keltavatsamurmeleita sekä marmotineja, Samettinärhiä oli meidän leirintäalueella ja mustahäntäpeuroja näimme useaan otteeseen. Karhua tai puumaa emme nähneet vaikka niistä jatkuvasti varoiteltiin.
Death Valleytä kohti lähdettiin samalla ajatuksella kuin Yosemiteä. Kun päästäisiin lähemmäksi puistoa etsisimme sopivan yöpymispaikan. Aluksi ajatuksena oli yöpyä teltoissa, mutta kun saavuimme Stovepipe Wellsiin lämpötila oli edelleen yli 40 astetta ja kello oli melkein 18:00. Lisäksi suurin osa leirintäalueista oli suljettu kesänajaksi. Siitä sitten suoraan Stovepipe Wells Village hotelliin kyselemään huoneita. Valitettavasti hotellissa ei meille ollut riittävästi huoneita, mutta respan suurella avustuksella saimme huoneet varattua Beattyn (NV) M6 motellista. Tuli ylimääräinen tunti ajoa, mutta meillä oli sentään nukkumapaikka. Pääsimme vielä uimaan ennen nukkumaan menoa.
Tiistaiaamun aloitimme viereisen kasinon Denny's ravintolan aamupalalla sekä Eddie's Worldin jäätelöillä, jonka jälkeen suuntasimme takaisin kansallispuistoon. Vierailimme puiston reunalla olevassa Rhyoliten aavekaupungissa vielä ennen Furnace Creekin luontokeskusta. Haimme puiston kartan ja tutustuimme keskuksessa olevaan näyttelyyn ennenkuin aloitimme kohteisiin tutustumisen autosta käsin. Kävimme ihailemassa Artist Palette reitin värikkäitä vuorenseiniä, ihmettelemässä Devil's Golf coursen suolamuodostelmia sekä Badwaterin suolakenttää, joka oli myös Yhdysvaltojen matalin kohta. Badwaterissa lämpömittari näytti jo yli 50 astetta. Lapset olivat jo ihan nuutuneet lämmöstä, joten otimme suunnan kohti Barstowta, josta olimme varanneet telttamajoituksen KOA:n leirintäalueelta. Kävimme Peggy Suen 50's dinerissa syömässä ja lapset kävi altaalla uimassa.
On Monday morning we packed our tents and before leaving to Death Valley we climbed up the cliffs beside our campsite. On top of the cliffs we encountered a deer buck which was as amazed of us as we were of it. We encountered a lot of wildlife in Yosemite. On our campsite we saw Steller's Jays almost everyday. On Gaylor Lake trail we saw Yellow Belly Marmoths and Ground Squirrels. Black Tail deers we saw on many different occasions. Unfortunately we never saw a bear or a mountain lion, even though there were warnings of them everywhere.
We started our approach to Death Valley the same way we did to Yosemite. We had no idea where we would sleep, but once we would get to the park we would find a suitable place. Our original plan was to sleep in the tents, but once we arrived to Stovepipe Wells the temperature was still 114 degrees at 6:00pm and most of the campsites were closed for the summer period. So we went directly to Stovepipe Wells Village hotel to ask about their vacancy. Unfortunately they did not have enough rooms for us, but with the fantastic help of the receptionist we were able to reserve rooms for us from the M6 motel in Beatty NV. This meant an additional one hour drive for us, but we had a place to stay and we got there on time for a evening swim.
Before heading to the national park, we started our Tuesday morning with breakfast at the next door casino's Denny's restaurant and Eddie's World ice creams. We visited the ghost town of Ryolite which was at the border of the park and then we headed to the Furnace Creek Visitor center. At the center we got our map and explored the centers exhibition, before going to the attractions which we viewed mainly from the car. We visited the Artist's Palette loop where we admired the beautifully colored mountain walls. We also wondered the salt formations on Devil's Golf course and the salt plains of Badwater which was also the lowest point of the United States. At Badwater the cars outside temperature showed 122 degrees and our kids were all out of energy, so we started our drive to Barstow where we had tent reservations at the KOA campground. We had dinner at Peggy Sue's 50's diner and the kids went for a swim in the campsite's pool.
