Nämä postaukset ei tule ihan kronologisessa järjestyksessä, vaikka tarkoitus oli... Mutta edelliseen postaukseen viitaten aika on usein tiukilla.
Meillä oli monella tapaa erilainen joulu täällä. Ensinnäkin kouluissa ei ole joulujuhlia, eikä todistuksia jaeta. Koulu järjestää talvi konsertin ja jokainen luokka järjestää oman näköisensä yhteen kokoontumisen. Jaden luokassa käytiin askartelemassa, Kasmirin luokassa oli näytelmää ja askartelua, Kristerin luokassa oli yhteinen välipala ja askartelua ja Jasminin luokassa oli yhteinen aamupala ja kykynäytös. Ja jokaiseen luokkaanhan piti viedä jotakin, millä tapahtuma toteutetaan. Täällä ei puhuta joulusta vaan mm toivotetaan Happy Holidays. Lisäksi loma koulusta alkoi vasta 23.12
.
Toki tämä tarjosi Annelle mahdollisuuden valmistella joulua rauhassa kotona. Lahjat piti hankkia, paketoida ja jemmata ja joulun ruoat valmistaa. Jottei ensimmäinen joulumme poissa Suomesta olisi pelkästään uutta, niin yritettiin valmistaa kaikki suomalaiseen jouluun kuuluvat ruoat: laatikot, kinkku, karjalanpiirakat, piparit, luumutortut... Kinkku kyllä tehtiin porsaanfileestä, ei edes yritetty etsiä varsinaista kinkkua.
Täällähän joulun odotukseen kuuluu Elf on the Shelf ja joulusukat takan reunalla ja monissa paikoin oli täysi joulukoristus kuusineen päivineen heti black Fridayn jälkeen. Meillä joulua rakennettiin maltillisemmin. Lapsilla oli Partio kalenterit ja mummun lähettämät tavarakalenterit, juhlavaloja hankittiin ja punaista lisättiin sisustukseen. Joulusukat takanreunalle käytiin ostamassa ja mummun lähettämiä koristetonttuja siirreltiin, jos satuttiin muistamaan. Kuusi ostettiin erään koulun vanhempainyhdistykseltä, joulukuun puolenvälin tienoilla, kun näytti, että kuuset myydään loppuun. Kuusen koristeetkin piti käydä hankkimassa. Joulun tunnelmaa käytiin etsimässä myös Polar Express höyryjuna ajelulta. Se oli hilpeä kokemus, tontut ryntäili edestakaisin, vaunu emäntä tonttu leikitti ja laulatti, joulupukki kävi jakamassa kellot ja muorikin kävi tervehtimässä. Matkan aikana saatiin kaakaota ja keksejä. Juna oli koristeltu ja radan varren talot oli valaistu ja joitakin asetelmia oli tehty. Pukki ja muori noukittiin kyytiin "pohjoisnavalta".
Aatto aamu aloitettiin riisipuurolla ja mantelikin löytyi... Netin kautta katseltiin joulupukin kuumaalinjaa, lumiukko ja rauhan julistus... Käytiin elokuvissa katsomassa Sing. Syötiin ja lapset kovasti odotti joulupukkia. Monta kertaa jouduttiin selittämään, että joulupukilla on niin pitkä matka tänne ja aikaerot ja kaikki, niin pukki ei tule sisälle istuskelemaan ja kuuntelemaan lauluja. Pukki käy yön aikana, jos on käydäkseen. Ruoat ei maistuneet eli ensi vuonna ei väännetä väkisin laatikoita ja muita tykötarpeita... Lapset toivoivat spaghettia ja lihapullia, ehkä mennään sillä. Lopulta lapset saatiin nukkumaan... Kun oltiin varmoja, että kaikki olivat unessa, kannettiin lahjasäkit parvekkeen ovelle, minne Jasmin oli kirjoittanut pukille viestin, että lahjat voi jättää ja oli lapset jättäneet pukille pari piparia ja juotavaa, että jaksaa taas jatkaa matkaa...
Joulupäivän aamuna riemu repesi, kun lapset löysivät lahjasäkit ja paketteja päästiin jakamaan ja aukomaan... Päivä kuluikin lahjojen parissa.
Tapanina oli jo päästävä vähän ulos, mikä näin jälkikäteen ei ehkä ollut paras idea... Lähdettiin tutustumaan läheiseen "pururataan" Race Brook trackiin. Mukava metsäreitti, mutta Annen yhden horjahduksen myötä vaatteet ja kengät oli napaan asti märät, puhelin kastui ja kultainen perintösormus katosi...
Meidän tavoitteena on ottaa mahdollisimman paljon irti kaikista vapaista ja lomapäivistä. Kajtsullakin oli mahdollisuus pitää pari päivää joululomaa, joten 27.12. lähdettiin ajelemaan kohti Torontoa. Me kun ei juuri koskaan vältytä seikkailuita, niin tähänkin matkaan sisältyi liki parin tunnin harhaan ajo. Lopulta kuitenkin löydettiin itsemme kartalta ja ajomatka oli nyt odotettua pidempi, mutta mikäs hätä meillä. Hotellille löydettiin kuitenkin. Ehdittiin tarkastaa hotellin allas ennen nukkumaan menoa. Seuraava päivä seikkailtiin Torontossa, CN tower ja lasilattia, Hockey Hall of Fame ja joitakin käveltyjä maileja. Illan tullen siirryttiin Niagaran putouksille hotelliin. Altaan tarkastus ja unille. Seuraavana päivänä itse putoukset Kanadan puolella. Taas torniin ja sen jälkeen käveltiin katsomaan putouksia lähempää. Vaikuttava paikka. Kyllä virtaavalla vedellä on hirvittävät voimat.
Matka jatkui, ajeltiin New Yorkin osavaltion pääkaupunkiin Albanyyn yöksi.
Uuden Vuoden aattoon herättiin Albanyssä. Käytiin kävellen tutustumassa kaupunkiin ja koko aikana nähtiin kourallinen ihmisiä ja muutama auto... Kaupunki oli käsittämättömän hiljainen. Ajeltiin kotiin. Käytiin kaupassa, katseltiin elokuva DVDltä, lapset meni nukkumaan, vuosi vaihtui. Telkkarista katseltiin ihmisten juhlintaa New York Cityssä... Uuden Vuoden juhlinta täällä oli pettymys.
Ensimmäinen joulu täällä on nyt juhlittu ja vuosi vaihdettu. Lapset palasivat kouluun 2.1.

We were planning to write to our blog more often and in chronological order, but as you could read from the previous post we've had a lot to do.
This year we had a different type of Christmas in many ways. To start off schools did not have Christmas celebrations like they do in Finland and report cards were not given. The schools organized a winter concert and each class had there own small gatherings. In Jade's class they had handcrafts, Kasmir's class had a play and handcrafts. Krister's class has handcrafts and a small lunch. Jasmin's class had a breakfast gathering and a talent show. Of course we had to organize different things for each of kid's classes. Here people do not talk about Christmas at all. It is called the holiday season. In addition school ended on December 23rd.
Here a part of the celebration is the Elf on the Shelf and the stockings beside the chimney. Many houses and apartments had Christmas decorations and Christmas trees immediately after black Friday. We started our decorations a bit later. Our kids had their typical Scouts calendars, Anne's mom sent our kids gift calendars and Kaj's parents sent the kids typical picture calendars. We bought some Christmas lights and red decorations to the apartment to get to the Christmas spirit. We bought the stockings and Anne's mom had sent us some Finnish elves, which acted as our Elves on the Shelf. Every week they changed location in the house. Around mid December we bought the Christmas tree from Saint Mary's PTA, as it started to look like all trees would be sold way before the Holidays. Of course we had to go an buy all the decorations for the tree as we only had the tree support, which we got from Esa before he returned to Finland.
Two days before Christmas Eve we went on a journey with the Polar Express steam train. This was a cheerful trip. We had a car hostess who played games with us and sang with us. Along the way we stopped at North Pole where we picked up Santa Claus and Mrs. Santa. Both of them came to our car and wished us a beautiful Christmas. We had come hot coco and cookies on our way back from North Pole.
On Christmas Eve we started according to traditions and we had rice porridge for breakfast. The almond was found for good fortune. We watched Santa Claus hotline, The Snowman and the declaration of Christmas peace from Finnish TV through the internet. During the day we went to the movies to see the movie Sing. After the movie we got back home and had Christmas dinner. The kid's did not enjoy the typical Finnish dinner, therefore we decided that next year we will have something else for dinner. Kid's ordered spaghetti and meatballs. Maybe we go with that next year. During the day the kid's were getting excited for the arrival of Santa Claus. We tried to explain to them here Santa Claus does not arrive on Christmas Eve, because of the time difference and distance from Finland where Santa Claus actually leaves. Because of this Santa Claus arrives on Christmas day and therefore does not come in to the house to listen to the kids sing and give the presents. He just visits during the night and leaves the presents beside the tree. After the dinner we just relaxed and we were able to get the kids to bed. While the kids were sleeping we moved the gift sacks beside the terrace door where Jasmin had written a message to Santa to leave the gifts. Beside the message our kid's had left cookies and something to drink, so that Santa would get some energy for the remaining of the trip.
You should have seen the joy on Christmas day when the kids saw the gift sacks and finally we got to open the presents. The whole day was spent wondering about the new toys and gifts. On boxing day we had to get our of the house, so we went for a walk in Race Brook tract. It was a very nice area with several trails in the forest. Unfortunately our trip, became to be a very expensive hike. We were exploring the actual Race Brook when Anne tripped and fell into the water. All her clothes got wet, here phone got soaked and she lost one of golden rings.
One of our targets is to experience new things as much as we can during our free time and holidays. Kaj got the opportunity to take some time off from work during the holidays, so we started driving to Toronto on December 27th. On most of our trips we get into an adventure and this trip was no exception. We started driving North from Orange using smaller roads than interstates and instead of using the GPS we followed road numbers. After few hours of driving we stopped for lunch and at that time we noticed that we had driven all the way to North Adams, which was 37 miles north than we planned to be. This additional route extended our travel time for almost two hours. Fortunately we were not in a hurry and finally we got to the hotel in Mississauga after more than 9 hours in the car. Before going to bed we visited the hotel pool and had some dinner in the hotel room.
On the next day we went to Toronto city center. We visited the CN tower and its glass floor. The Ice Hockey Hall of Fame and walked around downtown. Before it started to get dark we started our drive towards our hotel in Niagara Falls. Again before going to bed the kids wanted to go for a swim so we visited the hotel pool. This hotel even had a sauna. The following day we spent studying the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls. We started our day by going up the Skylon Tower where we got a beautiful view of both the US and Canadian falls. Of course we had to see the falls up close, so we walked to Table Rock Welcome center. It is amazing the power flowing water has. After admiring this wonder of nature we started our drive to Albany the Capitol of New York State, where we arrived late in the evening. We had some dinner in Red Lobster and with our tummies full we went to bed. The following day was a Saturday and also New Years eve. We drove to downtown Albany and walked around to admire the beautiful buildings of the capitol. The whole city was empty. We only saw few people the whole time we were there. This was something very different to us compared to the amount of people in Toronto or Niagara Falls. We only spent the morning in Albany and then we started our drive back home. Once in Orange we went to the supermarket to get food and something for our New Years celebration. The evening we spent watching movies and once the kids were in bed we watched the New Years TV broadcast from Times Square. New Years was a little disappointing as we missed the fireworks we have in Finland.
This was our first Christmas and New Year in USA. Kids went back to school on January 2nd.
