Viisumin hakuprosessi etenee / The visa application process is progressing

Viisumin hakuproseesi siirtyy nyt seuraavaan vaiheeseen eli hakemus lähtee United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) käsittelyyn. Itse hakuprosessihan aloitettin viikolla 7, jolloin sain linkin hakukaavakkeeseen ja ensimmäisen listauksen dokumenteista, jotka piti toimittaa lakitoimistolle. Kaavakkeen täytössä meni pari päivää ja dokumenttipaketin, joka sisälsi kopiot koulutodistuksista, passista, aikaisemmista viisuimeista, ansioluettelosta sekä 12 kuukauden palkkakuiteista, sain kasaan parissa päivässä. Eli voisi sanoa, että ensimmäiseen vaiheeseen meni n. viikko. Melkein heti kun sain ensimmäisen paketin matkaan tulikin sitten pyyntö lisädokumenteista. Tällä kertaa haluttiin toimekuvat niin Suomessa kuin Yhdysvalloissa sekä kopiot organisaatiokaavioista yms. Näiden dokumenttien saamiseen menikin sitten vähän enemmän aikaa, johtuen ihmisten lomista sekä työmatkoista, mutta toinen paketti lähti lakitoimistolle viikolla 10. Viime viikolla eli viikolla 14 sain nipun dokumentteja, joihin kaivattiin allekirjoituksia ja nämä dokumentit lähti lakitoimistolle tämän viikon alusta ja dokumentit olivat perillä keskiviikkona. Lakitoimiston mukaan kaikki on nyt valmista ja toivon mukaan saamme USCIS:n päätöksen huhtikuun loppuun mennessä ja toukokuussa pääsisimme käymään USA:n Helsingin suurlähetystössä haastattelussa, jonka jälkeen saisimme viisumit passeihimme. Tiukille vetää, mutta onhan tässä vielä 8 viikkoa aikaa ennen suunniteltua lähtöpäivää.


Our visa application goes to the next phase meaning it will be sent to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) for approval. The overall process started in mid February, when I received the link to the application form and the list of accompanying documents. This list included: copies of school diplomas, copies of the passport and previous visas, copy of my resume and payslips from the last 12 months. It took me two days to fill out the form and an additional two days to collect the needed documents so in total the first phase took me a week. Almost immediately after sending the first package I received a request for additional documents which included job descriptions and organization charts both for Finland and the United States. It took me longer to collect these documents, due to holidays and business trips of several people, but in the end the second package left beginning of March. Last week, meaning first week of April, I received a package of documents which required signatures. This package was sent to the law firm early this week and the law firm received the documents on Wednesday. According to the law firm everything has been done and now we wait for USCIS's approval. Hopefully we receive it by the end of April. Then we can visit the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki for an interview and we should have our passports by mid May. We still have 8 weeks before our planned departure date, therefore we do not have many weeks to spare.

Pääsiäinen / Easter Holidays

Perinteiseen tapaan olimme viettämässä pääsiäistä pohjoisissa. Torstaina ajoimme Kokkolaan tapaamaan Kasperin ja Elinan perhettä. Lähtömme viivästyi muutamalla tunnilla, joten olimme perillä Kokkolassa vasta ilta myöhään. Kokkolassa vietimme kaksi päivää, joidenka aikana askartelimme vitsoja, maalailimme munia, pelasimme pelejä, kävimme lasten kanssa virpomassa ja vielä kaiken kruunaukseksi kävimme koko porukalla keilaamassa. Sunnuntaina jatkoimme matkaa Ylläkselle, jossa jatkoimme loman viettoa Kaj:n vanhempien kanssa. Laskettelemassa käytiin koko perheen voimin. Jade aloitti laskettelu-uransa ja viihtyi joka päivä reilun tunnin Annen kanssa starttimatolla harjoitellen. Kasmir oppi laskettelemaan joulupyhien aikana ja jatkoi siitä mihin oli jäänyt. Samantien huipulle ja laskemaan Ylipitkää. Taisi olla toinen lasku kun herra päätti aloittaa myös metsässä laskemisen. Jasmin ja Krister olivat ilmoittaneet jo ennen matkalle lähtöä, että haluavat opetella lautailemaan. Siitähän Kaj innostui ja osti Hollolan Ski Outletista laudan ja kengät ja rupesi Ylläksellä opettamaan lapsille lautailua. Neljässä päivässä kummatkin oppivat lautailun perusteet ja Jasmin jopa laski muutaman kerran huipulta alas. Laskettelun lisäksi kävimme melkein joka päivä hiihtämässä ja lapset nyt ainakin leikkivät ulkona, jos eivät hiihtämään lähteneet. Perjantaina jatkoimme aurinkoisessa säässä matkaamme Rovaniemelle Nicon sekä Sannan perheen luo. Valitettavasti meillä ei ollut kuin yksi päivä aikaa, joten vietimme sen enimmäkseen Niclas serkun kanssa leikkien. Lauantaina aamupäivästä aloitimme paluun etelää kohti ja kotona olimme hieman yhdeksän jälkeen.

Kokonaisuudessaan loma oli erittäin mukava ja antoisa, mutta toisaalta myös hieman surullinen. Olemme viettäneet lähestulkoon jokaisen pääsiäisen Kristerin syntymän jälkeen Ylläksellä ja nyt tämä perinne jää tauolle ainakin seuraavaksi kahdeksi vuodeksi. Lisäksi lapsilla alkaa vähitellen lähtö konkretisoitumaan. Lapset yhtäkkiä tajusivat matkan aikana, että tämä saattoi olla viimeinen kerta kun he näkevät serkkujaan ennen meidän lähtöä, joten itkua väännettiin pitkään autossa aina kun serkut hyvästeltiin. Yritimme lohduttaa lapsia, että kyllä me vielä serkkuja nähdään ja jos ei muuta niin Skypen kautta. Lisäksi USA:ssa luodaan sitten uudet perinteet ja jos ei muuta auta viedään sinne Suomen virpomiskulttuuri. Tulihan sieltä meille Halloween.

Lapset ja Niclas serkku / The kids with Niclas

We continued our long tradition of spending Easter in Finnish Lappland. We started our journey on Thursday when we departed to Kokkola to visit Kasper's and Elina's family. We left few hours later than we originally planned, therefore we arrived to Kokkola quite late. In Kokkola we spent two complete days and we used those days crafting some "virpomisvitsa" (a decorated branch of willow used for Easter enchants), painting eggs, playing games, visiting the neighbors making Easter enchants and to top everything we went bowling. On Sunday we continued towards Ylläs, where we continued our holiday with Kaj's parents. In Ylläs we went downhill skiing for the first time with the whole family. Jade started her skiing career and she spent everyday more than an hour skiing down the kids slope with Anne. Kasmir continued where he had left off on Christmas break. He went directly to the top of the hill and started skiing the longest slope called Ylipitkä. On the second run he decided it was time for something new, so he went to ski outside the slopes. Jasmin and Krister had informed us before the trip that they want to start snowboarding. Of course Kaj was happy to hear this so he bought a snowboard already from Hollola Ski Outlet before we even left on holiday. Every day for several hours Kaj taught the kids snowboarding and after four days both kids had learned the basics of snowboarding. Jasmin even came down from the top on Thursday. In addition to downhill skiing we went cross country skiing almost everyday. Well the kids went outside to play in the snow everyday when they did not want to go cross country skiing. On Friday we continued our travelling on a beautiful sunny day towards Rovaniemi to visit Nico's and Sanna's family. Unfortunately we only had one day to spend with them, so we spent the whole time playing with Niclas. On Saturday we started our return trip home and we arrived home the same day at 9:00pm.

In overall our holiday was extremely nice and rewarding, but at the same time little bit sad. We have spent almost every Easter in Lappland since the birth of Krister and now this tradition will be on stand by for the next two years. At the same time our kids are starting to understand the impacts our moving to U.S. will have. Suddenly during our trip our kids realized that this might be the last time we see the cousins before our departure in June, therefore many tears were shed in the car immediately after we said goodbye to the cousins. We tried to comfort them by telling them that we will still meet with the cousins and if not we can see them via Skype. And what comes to traditions we will create new traditions in the U.S. for example we can introduce the culture of Easter enchants as a counter gift for Halloween.
