Kiitospäivä / Thanksgiving

Marraskuun 24. päivä vietimme elämämme ensimmäistä Kiitospäivää. Kaj on lapsuudessaan viettänyt Kiitospäivää kyllä koulujen juhlissa, mutta kotona heillä ei vietetty Kiitospäivää. Kiitospäivän aamuna ajoimme New Yorkiin katsomaan Macy's Kiitospäivän paraatia. Paraati alkoi aamu yhdeksältä ja meille kerrottiin, että paraatia paikanpäälle tulee katsomaan lähes kolme miljoona ihmistä, joten meidän piti lähteä hyvissä ajoin liikenteeseen. Paraati lähtöpiste oli Central Parkin vieressä W 77th Streetin korkeudella, joten ajoimme automme parkkiin Central Parkin itäpuolella olevaan parkkihalliin ja kävelimme puiston länsireunaan katsomaan paraatia. Valitettavasti kadun varret olivat jo täynnä porukkaa ja joihinkin osiin olisi pitänyt ostaa liput, jotta olisi päässyt näkemään paraatia, mutta me löysimme hyvän paikan W 71st Streetin korkeudelta. Ihan ei cheerleadereita ja soittokuntia nähty, mutta jokainen jättimäinen ilmapallo kyllä nähtiin. Saimme ihailla paraatin kulkua reilut pari tuntia ja kulkueen viimeisessä paraatiautossa oli tietysti Joulupukki. Tarkoittaen kai sitä, että siitä alkaisi sitten joulunaika.

Koska paraatin päätepiste oli Macy's tavaratalon kohdalla 34th Streetillä, päätimme jäädä hetkeksi Central Parkiin ennen kuin lähtisimme käymään Time Squarella sekä Rockefeller Centerissä. Lapset leikkivät Hecksherin leikkikentällä ja sitä ympäröivillä kallioilla. Lapsista nopeasti alkoi huomata, että nälkä alkoi iskeä, joten kysyimme Jadelta, koska hän oli myös päivän sankari mitä syötäisiin ja hän valitsi lounaaksi pizzaa. Lähdimme kohti Time Squarea ja samalla etsimme sopivaa ruokapaikkaa. Hyvin huomasi, että porukkaa oli paljon liikenteessä, koska kaikissa ravintoloissa oli todella pitkät jonot. Vastaan tuli sitten Pizza Hut ja siellä ei ollut kuin kaksi ihmistä jonossa, joten ei muuta kuin sinne. Pizza oli lasten mieleen ja muutama slice jäi ylimääräistäkin. Lapsille oli hyvin selvinnyt kiitospäivän merkitys ja halusivat viedä ylijääneet palat 7th Avenuella vastaan tulleille kodittomille. Keräsimme palat pieneen laatikkoon ja kävelimme muutaman korttelin takaisin Central Parkin suuntaan ja annoimme laatikon ensimmäiselle vastaan tulleelle herralle.

Tästä jatkoimme Rockefeller Centerille katsomaan oliko Joulukuusi saatu koristeltua, mutta valitettavasti kuusi oli vielä ilman koristeita. Koska päivä oli alkanut jo ennen aamu kuutta, päätimme lähteä takaisin kotiin valmistelemaan Kiitospäivän illallista. Kotiin kun pääsimme katsoimme paraatin uudestaan televisiosta. Tällä kertaa näimme myös soittokunnat sekä cheerleaderit. Kiitospäivä illalliseksi söimme kalkkunasta valmistettua lihamureketta, jossa oli täytteenä perinteinen Thanksgiving stuffing. Kalkkunan seurana meillä oli valkosipuliperunamuusia, maissia sekä parsaa. Loppu illan vietimme television ääressä katsellen elokuvia ja ottamalla ihan rennosti.

Ei yhtään hassumpi juhla tämä Kiitospäivä. Ensi vuonna uudestaan. Ehkä silloin meidän on hankittava se kokonainen kalkkuna.

On November 24th we celebrated our first Thanksgiving. Kaj had celebrated Thanksgiving in his youth in the international schools, but never with his family. Early Thanksgiving morning we started towards New York city to go and see Macy's Thanksgiving parade. The parade started already at 9:00am and we had heard that almost three million people would come to see the parade, so we decided to leave early to avoid traffic. As the starting point for the parade was beside Central Park on W77th street we drove our car to a parking hall on the eastern side of the park and we walked to the west side of the park to watch the parade. Unfortunately all the streets were packed with people and in some areas you would have had to buy tickets, but fortunately we were able to find a place to observe the parade close to W 71st street. We were not able to see all the cheerleaders and bands, but we were able to see all the giant balloons. The parade lasted more than two hours and on the final parade vehicle they had Santa Clause. Did this mean that Christmas time had started.

Because the parade's final stop was in front of Macy's department store on 34th street, we decided to stay at Central Park for a while before we would go to Time Square and Rockefeller center. The kid's enjoyed them selves while playing at the Hecksher playground and the "cliffs" surrounding the playground. It did not take long before we could see from our kid's that they were getting hungry. As the 24th was also Jade's birthday we asked her what she wanted to eat for lunch. She chose pizza, so we started to walk towards Time Square. We could see that a lot of people were on the move as all the restaurants had huge queues. In some point we saw a Pizza Hut and inside they only had two people waiting for food, so we quickly entered and ordered food to eat. The kids loved our pizza lunch and we had so much food that were not able to eat the whole pizzas. It seems that our kids had understood the meaning of Thanksgiving as they decided to take the left overs to homeless people we had passed on 7th Avenue. We gathered the pizza slices in one of the boxes and walked few blocks back toward Central park and the kid's gave the box to the first gentleman we met.

From there we continued towards Rockefeller Center to see if the Christmas tree had been decorated, but unfortunately the tree was still without any decorations. As we had started the day before 6:00 am we decided to return home to prepare our Thanksgiving dinner. We drove home and once we got there we opened the TV and noticed that they were showing  the parade on TV. This time we were able to see even the bands and cheerleaders. For Thanksgiving dinner we had meatloaf made of turkey and Anne had used a traditional stuffing as the filling of the meatloaf. With the meatloaf we had garlic masked potatoes, corn and broccoli. The remaining of the evening we stayed on the sofa watching movies and taking it easy.

We have to say Thanskgiving was a very nice celebration. Next year again. Maybe then we will have to buy a complete turkey.

Halloween

Nyt on sitten vietetty Halloweenia oikein kunnolla. Lasten asut ostimme jo hyvissä ajoin jo syyskuun puolella. Heti kun Halloween tuotteet tulivat kauppoihin. Täällä Halloween on todella suuri juhla. Kauppoihin tuli Halloween tuotteet heti syyskuun alussa ja Boston Post Roadin varrelle tuli useita kauppoja, jotka olivat täynnä Halloween tuotteita. Aina asusteista pihakoristeisiin.

Ensimmäisen kerran juhlimme Halloweenia lasten koulun Monster Bash and 5K dash tapahtumassa 22.10. Koska päivä oli sateinen ja kylmä tapahtuma siirrettiin koulun sisätiloihin. Tapahtuma aloitettiin Kid's fun runilla, jossa lapset juoksivat koulun juoksuradan kaksi kertaa ympäri. Muuten päivä sisälsi kurpitsojen koristelua, monsteri käsien askartelua, useita eri pelejä sekä tietysti kummitustalossa vierailua. Tapahtuma oli erittäin mukava ja pääsimme jälleen tutustumaan koulun opettajiin sekä muiden lasten vanhempiin.

Itse Halloween juhla oli maanantaina 31.10. ja Orangen koulut olivat järjestäneet päivälle koulukohtaiset paraatit. Jaden koulun paraati oli aamulla 9:30 ja lapset kiersivät hienosti palolaitoksen sekä kaupungintalon ympäri, joista matkan varrella saivat pusseihinsa karkkia. Paraatin jälkeen vanhemmat pääsivät tutustumaan lasten luokkiin. Race Brookin paraati oli järjestetty iltapäivälle 14:00. Koska isompien lasten koulun on syrjemmässä, heidän paraati kiersi koulun takana olevaa juoksurataa. Mahtavaa nähdä miten kaikki koulun opettajat sekä muut työntekijät olivat täysillä mukana paraatissa. Paraatin jälkeen kävimme jälleen tutustumassa lasten luokkiin.

Koulun jälkeen taloyhtiömme oli järjestänyt taloyhtiön toimistolle oman pienen tapahtuman. Toimiston oleskelutilaan oli järjestetty karkkeja ja muita herkkuja, jotta lasten ei tarvitsisi kierrellä taloyhtiön kaikissa rakennuksissa ja rapuissa. Oli mukavaa päästä tutustumaan taloyhtiön muihin asukkaisiin ja nähdä kaikki lapset hienoissa asuissa.

Osaan kaupoista on jo ilmestynyt joulutuotteet, mutta ennen joulua vietämme vielä kiitospäivää.

W have now celebrated Halloween. We bought the kid's costumes already in September the moment they were available in the stores. Here in the United States Halloween is a very big function. Stores and markets have Halloween products available early September and even on Boston Post road they a several stores dedicated only for Halloween merchandise. The stores had everything from costumes to garden decorations.

We celebrated Halloween for the first time when our kid's school organizes the Monster Bash and 5K dash festival on 10/22. As this day was a cold and rainy day the festival was transferred inside the school building. The festival started with the Kid's fun run, where the kids ran twice around the school track with their costumes on. The remaining of the day included pumpkin decorations, making monster hands our of popcorn, many different games and of course there was a haunted house. We enjoyed the festival very much and it was nice to be able to meet again with the teachers and with the other parents of the school.

Actual Halloween day was Monday 10/31 and all the schools of Orange had organized a Halloween parade. Jade's parade started at 9:30am and the parade passed beside the Fire Department and Town Hall where the kid's were able to get some treats. After the parade parents were invited to visit the classrooms. Racr Brooks school had their parade a 2:00pm and a the school is a little bit remote the parade was organized on the track behind the school. It was fantastic to see how all the teachers and school staff were fully involved in the parade and everybody had amazing costumes. After the parade we visited the kid's classrooms and met with the teachers.

Immediately after school our residential office had organized a small Halloween party in our clubhouse. The office staff had organized different types of tidbits and all the residents were able to bring treat to the party. This way the kids did not have to go around the residential area visiting the different buildings and try to get in from different entrances. Again it was very nice to meet other residents and see all the kids in there fantastic costumes.

The stores are now getting ready for Christmas, but before that we will celebrate Thanksgiving.

Uuden kokemuksen perjantai / New experience Friday

Perjantaina 7.10. tavallisen aamu tohinan jälkeen lapset lähetettiin bussilla kouluun. Kaj oli järjestänyt Annelle synttäri yllätykseksi koko vartalo hieronnan ja infrapunasaunan. Kaj tiputti Annen day spalle klo 9.00. Anne laittoi puhelimen äänettömälle ja uppoutui käsittelyyn... Pari kertaa kuullen puhelimen värinän... Vähän yli klo 11 Kaj oli tullut Annen hakemaan ja kertoi, että koulusta oli soitettu... Koulu on lukittu. Lapset ei pääse ulos, eikä kukaan pääse kouluun ja poliisit ovat koululla turvaamassa tilanteen. Kenelläkään ei ole mitään hätää, vanhempien ei pidä mennä koululle, eikä turhaan soitella. Koulu on lukittu varotoimenpiteenä, koska joku oli yrittänyt pankkiryöstöä lähikunnassa Woodbridgessä ja ryöstäjän pakomatka oli suuntautunut koululle päin.

Hiukan kuumottava tilanne näin ensikertalaiselle, mutta turvallisuus ennen kaikkea. Lapset tulivat koulusta tavalliseen tapaan bussilla noin 15.15. Olivat luulleet, että tilanne oli harjoitus, eivätkä siis osanneet edes säikähtää sitä mahdollisuutta, että törmäisivät oikeaan ryöstäjään.

Lisäksi Kasmir oli palkittu pesukarhu palkinnolla hyvin onnistuneesta kouluviikosta. Kasmirin nimi oli kuulutettu koko koululle ja toimistosta piti palkinnoksi hakea koulun juomamuki.

Lisäksi Annella oli Kristerin opettajan kanssa sovittu keskustelu aika klo 15.30 koululla. Kaksi tuntia hujahti jutellen opettajan ja ESL (English Second Language)-opettajan kanssa Kristerin mahdollisuuksista, mahdollisista tuen tarpeista ja kovasti olivat kiinnostuneet Suomen koulujärjestelmästä ja Suomesta. Täällä ei selkeästikään takerruta lapsen mahdollisiin puutteisiin vaan yritetään kannustaa kykyjen kautta, Kristeriltä on paljastumassa musiikillisia ja taiteellisia lahjoja... Ja Kristerin kohteliaisuutta, rohkeutta, reippautta ja sosiaalisia taitoja kehuttiin.

Friday 10/07 started as every weekday. After our morning hassle the kids left to school, but this Friday was a little bit different as Kaj had organized Anne a birthday surprise by taking her to the Spa for a massage and an infrared sauna. Kaj dropped Anne to the Spa a 9:00 am and once Anne got there she turned her phone on to mute and started to relax. During the session Anne could hear her phone buzz a few times, but did not react to it at all. At 11:00 am Kaj came to pick her up and at the same time Kaj told her the news that the kid's school had been put into lock-down. Kids are not allowed to leave the school and nobody is allowed to the school. The local police department is securing the area. The notification from the school informed parents that all the kids were fine and the school recommended parents to avoid coming to the school or even calling to the school. The school was on lock-down as a precaution. Apparently somebody had robbed a bank in Woodbridge and the robber had escaped to the direction of the school. 

To receive a notification like this from the school was shocking at first to us parents, but we had to remind ourselves everything was done to keep the kids safe. During the day the lock-down was down graded and the kids arrived home a 3:15 pm as normal. Our kids had thought the whole thing was an exercise and had no idea of any robbery. So all ended well.

On Friday Kasmir was also awarded with a raccoon reward for an excellent school week. Just before the school day ended Kasmir's name was announced in the central radio and he was invited to the main office to pick up his award, which was a school mug. Anne's birthday ended with a visit to the school at 3:30 pm where she met with Krister's teacher.  Anne spent two hours discussing with the teacher and ESL teacher with regards to what type of support Krister needed from the teachers and from us parents and what where the expectations. In addition the teachers were very interested in the Finnish school system and about Finland in overall. It is amazing to see how the teachers here do not get stuck with the flaws a kid could have, but give support according to the kids abilities. Krister was praised for being polite, brave and smart. He has extremely good social skills and what came as a surprise to us, he apparently has musical and artistic skills of which we had not idea.
